Minor League Round-up: 4/26/07

Iowa 7 - Memphis 4

  • Pitching Notes: Angel Guzman had better results in his second start, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 5 (0 walks) over 4.1 IP. John Webb also allowed 2 earned run in his one inning of work. Carmen Pignatiello, Ben Howard and Clay Rapada all chipped in with scoreless relief work.
  • Hitting Notes: Michael Fontenot was the hitting star for Iowa, going 3-5 with a double, 3 run HR and 4 RBIs. Koyie Hill went 2-5 while Eric Patterson was 1-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Buck Coats also scored 2 runs in an 0-4 night.
  • Carolina 13 - Tennessee 4
  • Pitching Notes: Folks coming in to look for news of a good outing on the part of Sean Gallagher will be slightly disapointed, though most of the damage occured against the relief in this one. Gallagher only lasted 2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits including a solo HR, while striking out 3. Kevin Hart and Gregory Reinhard each allowed 5 earned runs apiece, Hart over 5.1 innings, Reinhard over 1.2. Smokies pitching allowed 6 HRs tonight and according to the box score, wind was negligable. The bulk of the damage came during the 7 run 8th inning by the Mudcats, who came into the game last in the Southern League in hitting.
  • Hitting Notes: Leadoff man Chris Walker had a 2-5 night. 3B Issmael Salas went 2-5 with a double, scoring two runs. SS Joseph Simokitis went 2-3 with a walk. Jake Fox went 1-5 and scored a run as he split his time between catcher and first base. Brian Dopirak went 1-3 with a walk as he tries to get his  batting average above the mendoza line (he sits at .195).
  • Jupiter 6 - Daytona 4
  • Pitching Notes: Scott Taylor picked up his third loss of the season, surrendering 5 ER on on 9 hits while striking out 4 over 5 innings. Scott Korber pitched 2 innings and gave up one run while Matthew Avery pitched a scoreless inning.
  • Hitting Notes: Daytona faced 7 innings of former Cub system products, starting with Ricky Nolasco who was followed by Sergio Mitre. SS Matt Matulia went 2-5 with a double in the leadoff spot, scoring 2 runs. Tyler Colvin, who again was playing center field went 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Nate Spears went 4-5.
  • West Michigan 11 - Peoria 3
  • Pitching Notes: Starter Jose Pina allowed 7 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks over 3.2 IP. Marco Carillo allowed 3 runs over 2.1 IP. Charles Platt allowed 1 unearned run and Julio Castillo pitched a scoreless 9th.
  • Hitting Notes: Not much to speak of. Yusuf Carter had a two hit night, hitting a double and scoring a run in 3 at bats. Alfred Joseph and Wellington Castillo had the other two hits for Peoria as the team continues to struggle at the plate.
