Iowa 17 - Sacramento 7
Pitching Notes: J.R. Mathes, whose real first name is Alfred picked up his 4th win of the season and should thank his teammates for a lot of run support. He threw six innings and gave up 6 runs on 9 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4. Randy Wells walked 3 and allowed 1 hit while striking out 4 in 2 scoreless innings. Carmen Pignatiello allowed 1 run in his inning of work. A short bit on Pignatiello... if the Cubs are looking for a lefty reliever on the off chance that Ohman and Eyre continue to suck, Pignatiello is worthy of consideration. Carmen has been in the Cubs organization since 2000, has had lots of ups and downs over his career, but has always been on the periphery. He may never ammount to more than a AAAA player, but this guy may truely be the prototypical lefty who takes a while to figure things out. I guess my point is that Pignatiello may be cut from the same cloth as Jamie Moyer and we may see him have a few really solid years in the majors. I'd like to see him get a shot one day. He's paid his dues without much hype.
Hitting Notes: As one would expect when you see a score like this, the I-Cubs beat the hell out of Sac. pitching. Eric Patterson, who has been on a tear over the past week or two went 2-4 with 2 walks, a solo HR, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Felix Pie went 3-6 with a triple, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Michael Fontenot went 4-6 with a double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Micah Hoffpauir went 3-6 with a double and a two run HR. Koyie Hill went 2-4 with a 3 run HR. Scott Moore and Ronnie Cedeno each went 1-3 but each also had 2 walks.
Fielding Notes: Cedeno had an error.
Chattanooga 11 - Tennessee 2
Pitching Notes: Kevin Hart had a day he'd like to forget, allowing all 11 Lookouts runs in 4 innings on 9 hits (including 3 HRs). 7 of the runs came in the second inning. Billy Petrick pitched 3 innings of no hit/no walk relief and struck out 4. Tim Leyden allowed 1 hit over 2 innings, striking out 2.
Hitting Notes: Not much worth mentioning other than Jake Fox who went 2-4 with 2 doubles, driving in both runs for the Smokies. Fox caught today's game.
Daytona joined the rest of the Florida State League in taking a much deserved day of rest on this Mother's Day Sunday.
Peoria 8 - Wisconsin 5 (Game 1: 7 innings)
Pitching Notes: Starter Jacob Renshaw was sailing along and looked to be in line for a 7-inning complete game but ran into troubles and gave up 4 in the 7th inning. Renshaw went 6.1, allowing 5 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks while striking out 2. Jayson Ruhlman came in to record the last two outs, giving up 1 hit and allowed 2 inherited runners to score.
Hitting Notes: C Wellington Castillo went 3-3 with a walk, a double, and a 2 run HR. Josh Lansford went 2-r with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Alfred Joseph went 2-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Fielding Notes: Castillo committed his 9th error of the season.
Wisconsin 5 - Peoria 3 (Game 2: 8 Innings)
Pitching Notes: Marco Carillo had a pretty mediocre start, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Oscar Bernard allowed 1 hit and 2 walks in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Jeremy Papelbon picked up the loss, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing a walk-off 2-run HR in the 8th (minor league DHs are 7 inning games). The walk-off HR was the second long ball of the game for Andrew Hargrove, son of Mariners manager Mike Hargrove.
Hitting Notes: James Adduci went 2-4 with a double. Russell Canzler went 1-3 with a solo HR. Yusuf Carter went 1-4 with a triple and a run scored.
