Questions about St. Louis?

I am going to St. Louis to watch the Cubs in september. i know its a long ways away but i have a few questions since i have never been there.

I dont have tickets so i was wondering what the scalper situation is like there in comparison to wrigley field? Should i go there without tickets or bite the bullet and pay top dollar on ebay or to some ticket broker online?

I am staying within walking distance of the ballpark at the W S Hotel & Spa. I got the room for about $100 a night. Is there somewhere else close to the ballpark, reasonable in price and recommended?

What else is worth seeing or doing in STL?

The games are sept. 14, 15 and 16. who else is going? Maybe there should be a BCB party saturday night?

To round out my trip i am going to chicago for the  17th and 18th games vs. cincinnati. i managed to get dugout box seats for those by the visitors dugout.

Anyways, i hope someone here has some good tips about st. louis and what to expect. thanks for any help. rh

St. Louis
From what I've heard that hotel is an absolute dump.  The "spa" is not anything that you'd want to be near (in fact, the online reviews I've read said that not a single person used it).  100 dollars a night for downtown STL is too good to be true.  Personally, I'd recommend the Millenium, which isn't too far from the ballpark.  It'll probably cost you around 150 a night or so -- not too bad for here.

As for the scalping question, all I can say is that they exist.  I don't know how costly it would be to buy from them, but you won't have a hard time finding a seller.

I don't know what you're into, but the zoo here is pretty cool for a family activity.  I'd recommend the Central West End area if you're looking for a bar scene.

I live in St. Louis and would be happy to answer any specific questions that you have.

St. Louis
Travel down here for work every week.  Two blocks from Busch Stadium.  Stay at the Hilton Ballpark.  Assuming you are member of the younger generation, then you will probably like to hit LaClede's Landing before or after the ballgame.  It's about a 9 or 10 block walk and 20-something hangout with lots of bars, etc.  Beyond that, downtown St. Louis has zero to offer.  The sidewalks roll up at 5:30.  And the city, though on the rebound, is generally speaking a giant cesspool.

St. Louis
Assuming you have a car, two places I enjoyed when I was in St. Louis were the Hill and Schlafly.  The Hill is the Italian neighborhood of St. Louis--good Italian food, laid back, and neighborhoodsy.  Schlafly is an excellent microbrew with two locations.  The "Tap Room" is downtown, but I prefer the "Bottleworks" in the near suburb of Maplewood.

Enjoy your road trip.

Can't go wrong with the Hill
Childhood neighborhood of Yogi Berra, Joe Garagiola and Joe Buck.  Some good Italian food joints.  Great baseball nostalgia.

Despite what I say about St. Louis the city, I have to admit this is a great baseball town.  In fact it is the best baseball town in the country.  Cardinal fans know their stuff.  There is a 65 year old secretary Cardinal fan in our office down here that can quote me the batting averages of the Cub bench for crying out loud.

And though I am a happily married middle aged man, I must say there are lots of very good young women who hang out at the ballpark.

Hate to admit it
but St. Louis IS a fantastic baseball town.  The fans really do know their stuff yet are really friendly.  Cardinals fans know when to rib Cubs fans and when to back off a little...quite the opposite of Sox fans.  A few times, while I was living there, I would go to the local bars to watch the Cubs/Cards games.  Once the Cardinals fans found out I'm a Cubs fan, they would actually gravitate toward me for the scouting report on various Cubs players.  You'll have a good time.

thanks for the quick replies
i am 31 and the gf is 29 if that helps for any recommendations. i do like to drink though and am definitely blue collar so i prefer pubs and bars to niteclubs or dance bars.

as for the hotel, i made the reservation so i had one somewhere while i did a little more research about the city. i will check out the millenium and the hilton. i am not too fussy as long as the place is clean.

"a giant cesspool", lmao, i always look forward to your posts, bluemike. thanks again.rh

From what I'm told
the Anheuser Busch brewery tour evokes plenty of reference to the Simpsons episode where Homer and Barney tour the Duff Brewery.  Let's just say that there is more per capita trailer trash in the St. Louis metropolitan area than at a Dollywood.

Does Soriano's defense at 2B really cost more runs than in LF? He makes a lot fewer errors in LF since misplays and mental mistakes aren't figured into the stats, but I have to imagine that his mistakes are more physical at 2B. Any thoughts? Is there a statistic on this?
