Ernie Banks Statue at Wrigley

The statue will be erected at Wrigley Field by Opening Day 2008.

No word yet on where it will be placed.

Even though Ernie already has a flag, I think this an honor that is well deserved and a great idea.

Not a fan of the statutes
The way Wrigley Field is configured on the corner of Clark and Addison doesn't lend itself to proper statute placement.  The Harry Caray statute is in an odd place if you ask me.  And you have got to be kidding me that there is statute to Jack Shithouse.  He might have been a swell guy who paid his taxes on time and threw a quarter in the Salvation Army jar, but he sucked as an announcer.  Hey hey!

Man...
... are you critical!

Many other teams, from the Pirates (Willie Stargell) to the Cardinals (Stan Musial) to the White Sox (Minnie Minoso) have statues to franchise icons.

It's about time the Cubs got one. Maybe it should be inside the park on the concourse, or somewhere else, once they build the "campus" they're talking about.

But this is the right thing to do.

No disagreement
It's just that there isn't a logical place to plop a statue(s).  Placement of the Harry Caray statue is terrible.  There should be statue of several great Cub players.  Jack Outhouse?  I don't think so.

About Brickhouse...
... you do know his statue is at Tribune Tower?

I think that's pretty odd, actually.

Actually
I forgot about that.  I always thought Brickhouse was truly awful.  He was a nice man and all, but he was the Irv Kupcinet of Chicago Cubs baseball.  I liked Vince Lloyd.  I liked Lou Boudreau.  But Brickhouse?  Yeech.  All time worst?  Without a doubt, Smilo Hamilton.  Dear God was he wretched.

Agreed on Milo.
Not only did I not like his broadcasting style, but from everything I've heard, he was a first-class jerk.

Edit feature
As far as I know, Scoop, the engine the SB Nation sites + Daily Kos + many other sites are built on, does not have a feature that allows you to edit comments. It's out of Al's control.

The logical conclusion that people should take away from this is to hit the "preview" button before posting so that they can double check themselves. I think it would also reduce the number of flame wars that erupt, because it would probably encourage people to bite their tongue and rephrase inflammatory statements.

The best solution would probably be to remove the "post" button until the "preview" button has been pressed.

I applaud this...
...and let me say I'm genuinely surprised at how quickly this came about. I was expecting Cubs management to hem and haw about this for some time.

My favorite line from the Trib article: "McDonough had cited the fact the Cubs will be sold at the end of 2007, which could delay the project."

Hey, kinda like Big Z's contract!
