House cleaning

I don't do this often enough, a lot like the title, but I saw this over at the currently team owned newspaper Banks statue details Of course, it's probably been posted already, discussed a hundred times over, and recycled into the abyss that is the vast interweb. The statue is long overdue by the way.

Star-divide

The choicest cut, if the article were a slab of beef, would be this tidbit:

"I don't think it will come as any great shock that it will be Ernie standing with the bat in his hands, and with his wiggling fingers and cocked wrists, as Jack Brickhouse would say," said Cella, who was the co-sculptor of the Harry Caray statue at Sheffield and Addison. Since statues are the latest greatest trend, even the Sox are building another statue (for Billy Pierce in July), I wonder what it would cost to get a statue built for "The Mad Russian," Lou Novikoff??? Or maybe I could save pennies in a glass and redeem them for a Greg Maddux/Fergie Jenkins pitcher statue, after all hitters get all the pub, but pitchers finish ballgames, unless it's a ninth inning come from behind rally, doh!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

No offense...
...but I can't figure out what you're trying to say. And there's already a diary on the Banks statue.

Clever...and no offense taken.
You must be very handy with the search feature. I apologize, I still have trouble finding postings and separating old diaries from new ones, comments, etc...Hence, my choice to include the little part about it alread being posted somewhere on this board. Maybe I just am not a fan very much of the process of having to search for threads that get pushed beyond the first page of the "diaries" section. I also would love an edit button and a sarcasm font, but those are quibbles I suppose.

Yes to Banks!!
Oh than I guess I have to improve on my interweb writing... I am wholeheartedly in favor of the Banks statue. It should've been built long ago.

I don't get this either.
But I will say that this is only the fifth time in BCB history that Lou Novikoff's name has been mentioned.

Yep
I posted it once before I believe...back when you were doing the greatest 100. I'm all for the Banks statue, it's long, really long overdue.

Sorry, I need an edit button.
I posted a mention of Lou "the mad russian" Novikoff before. He made for excellent reading when I got a hold of the Eddie Gold/Art Ahrens books on the Cubbies of yesteryear. I just can't stop laughing enough at the thought of him in Wrigley, afraid of the ivy, and concerned about the asymmetrical dimmensions of the park. It's just hilarious, and then you look at old photographs of him. He's the quintessential Cub for a lot of reasons, with an excellent nickname. check out this photo: Novikoff

Novikoff...
... had talent. But that irrational fear of the ivy helped derail what could have been a decent career.
