Minor League Round-up: 5/2/07 (updated)

My apologies for missing the second Iowa-Nashville game as I did not notice there was a double header.

Iowa 2 - Nashville 1 (Game 1)

  • Pitching Notes: Sean Marshall's stay at Daytona must have been cut short as he started tonight for Iowa and made a bid to have the Cubs consider going to a 3 lefty rotation. Marhsall pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 7 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 5. One would imagine that Marshall will be on a pitch count for a few more starts and he gave way to Ben Howard who pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief in picking up win number 2 of the season.
  • Hitting Notes: Not a heck of a lot to speak of as 6 players had one hit each. Angel Pagan and Koiye Hill scored runs and Eric Patterson got the only RBI for Iowa.
  • Other Notes: The left side of the infield had some issues with Michael Fontenot (SS) and Scott Moore (3B) each committing errors.

  • Nashville 2 - Iowa 0 (Game 2)
  • Pitching Notes: JR Mathes averaged more than 2 baserunners an inning, yet managed to pitch 5 scoreless innings, giving up 10 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. The three Iowa DPs likely gave him a little help. Randy Wells picked up his third loss of the season giving up both runs on 3 hits over 1.2 IP. Carmen Pignatiello retired the one batter he faced and has not allowed a run over 9 appearances at Iowa and Tennessee
  • Hitting Notes: Not much hitting as four Iowa hitters each collected a hit (Fontenot, Coats, Walker and Rojas).
  • Tennessee 4 - Birmingham 3 (11 innings)
  • Pitching Notes: Justin Berg, the pride of Antigo, WI (hey, I have to mention Antigo as I had a roommate from there) started this one and pitched well, throwing 7 innings allowing 2 runs (1 ER) on 1 hit. He walked 3 and K'd 3. Adalberto (I think Pat and Ron would have fun with that name) Mendez came in and notched a blown save, giving up 1 run on 2 hits over .2 of an inning. Geoffrey Jones and Jim Henderson combined for 3.1 hitless innings with Henderson picking up the win in extras.
  • Hitting Notes: Matt Craig continues to feast on Southern League pitching, going 2-5 with 2 runs scored and a solo HR. Jake Fox went 2-5 with 2 K's. LF Jorge Cortes went 4-5 with 2 doubles. Sam Fuld went 2-3 with 2 walks in the leadoff spot and the "Feast or Famine" award goes to Gary Cates who went 2-6 with 3 K's.
  • Jake Fox position watch: DH
  • Dopirak-0-meter: .190 (0-5 with 1K)
  • St. Lucie 4 - Daytona 3
  • Pitching Notes: Joel Santo gave up everything St. Lucie would need, surrendering 4 earned runs in 2.2 innings. The bullpen shut St. Lucie down with Michael Phelps throwing 2 scoreless innings (2 hits, 1 BB 2 Ks), Scott Korber allowing 2 hits over 3.1 innings and Jerry Blevins throwing a perfect inning.
  • Hitting Notes: Not much to speak of as Daytona collected three hits today, two off the bat of Jesus Valdez and one off the bat of Ryan Harvey who hit a 2 run HR for Blue Mike.
  • Other Notes: Kyle Reynolds is having some fielding issues thus far at 3B as he committed his tenth error of the season today.
  • Peoria 2 - South Bend 0
  • Pitching Notes: Peoria continued their season trend of getting good pitching and pretty much no hitting. Tonight three guys who are likely getting some notice amongst the Cubs brass shut out South Bend. Rafael Dolis gave up 3 hits and 4 walks over 5.2 IP (striking out 4). He's now 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA. Ale Maestri allowed 4 hits over 2.1 innings as his ERA shrunk to 1.35. Rocky Roquet picked up his 6th save of the season, striking out 2 and walking 1 in the 9th. He has yet to allow an earned run this season.
  • Hitting Notes: The recently demoted Jamed Adduci appears to like the Midwest League better than the Florida State League. He went 2-4 and drove in a run. SS/3B Jonathan Mota went 1-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Russell Canzler went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Other Notes: Peoria turned 3 double plays in this one.
