Just a thought.... Bobby Abreu

The Yankees and Cubs both need to shake things up..    Yeah the Yankees' hitting hasn't been great, but gotta figure Jetah, Damon, Matsui, ARod, Posada, etc. can get it going.  They need pitching help, whereas the Cubs need help in general... lol

Soooo Perhaps Howry and Dempster and fillers for Abreu??  Abreu hasn't done much this year and he's a free agent after 2007 (has a $2 million option buyout), so his trade price tag shouldn't be huge.  Perhaps Howry can get it going in NY, and Dempster's been good this year and NY could possibly start him.  Yes the Cubs' pen has sucked, but the hitting's not great either.  Just roll the dice with Guzman, Wuertz, Marmol and Cotts in the pen..  Gotta try something different at this point, and maybe try to trade Barrett & Murton for relief.

Huh?
Dempster's the only guy who you don't WANT to trade. Yes, he has value, but who do you want to close? Certainly not Marmol or Cotts...not yet.
Guzman has promise, granted -- save for last night, Wuertz could do it too -- but not at the expense of trading Dempster.

I'm not
a big Dempster fan.  They'd trim 2008 payroll by moving Dempster and Howry..  Maaaaaybe the Yankee would take Jock Jones too?? Doubtful..

Abreu's
in a horridly fast decline in his career

over the last 3 years its been the power and the defense

this year its been the bat speed and the batting eye

seriously we want no part of this

on top of that i dont see how Howry or Dempster significantly help the Yankees either since it depletes their offense (Abreu in decline is still better than the VASTLY overrated Melky Cabrera) and Dempster only helps if used in the bullpen

this whole Dempster as a SP idea needs to be forgotten and quickly

Please tell me you are joking.
Seriously, man.  Look at his numbers.

Did you notice the Phillies did BETTER with him gone?

Why not go after Sammy Sosa.  We need more young talent if we are going to compete, not some old washed up loser.

Bobby Abreu
Might have borrowed syringes from the same locker as Giambi, Bonds and Sosa.  No thanks.  He WAS a phenomenal and unique offensive player, but is in rapid decline.

Maybe so...
Funny how this guy has slid so quickly.  He was beloved by many, such as was the case for JD Drew and Brian Giles...

If he's this bad, then offer up the deal I posted under Al's comment.  Dumpster, Howry and Jones for Abreu.  According to mlb4u, Dempster makes $5.5 million in 08, Howry makes $4 million in 08, and Jones makes $5 million for 2008, while Abreu has a $2 million buyout.  So the Cubs could save $12.5 million and use that money on a free agent like Adam Dunn.  It's one of those "lightning in a bottle deals" that can be justified to most Cubsfans..

Also, getting Abreu outta NY may take some pressue off and perhaps he could post a .350 obp in the 2 hole.

You know...
I'm not going to give you a hard time, especially since the thought crossed my mind recently as well. And he still looks better in RF than Murton ever would. However, I wouldn't give up more than B prospects, and maybe a reliever or Murton. And it's unlikely that Bobby would waive his NTC without cash considerations, or an agreement to pick his 16 million dollar option up. Sliding Matsui over to right, and trying Murton/Cabrera in LF makes some sense for NY too, but I think mostly the money doesn't add up.

The only way i see barrett being traded
is if he is packaged up to bring another cathcer in, or if we turn around quickly to go get one..  We cannot win ballgames with blanco as an everyday starter...  I probably should have rephrased that, cause its not like we can win ball games anyways...

Lord, no.
Abreu's done. He was done last year, he's burnt toast now.

If Hendry called Cashman with this offer, Cashman would drive Abreu to the airport himself so fast it'd make your head spin.

If so,
then package Jones too.  It would save $12 million or so for 2008..

It fits Hendry's MO
nonetheless acquiring Abreu would be making moves to simply make moves.

Bloated contract, on the wrong side of 30, there are better options.

He also K's
A LOT. Like Soriano style.

That's what happens when you work counts
Unlike Soriano, Abreu has walked over a hundred times each of the last eight seasons.  Soriano's highest season total is 67, and before last year he had never even cracked 40.

But K's
A LOT. Wrong side of 30, bloated contract.

The K's are just icing.

Ok... I guess I don't get it
I do not understand if I live in a parallel world or something, but saying Abreu was done last year is ridiculous. The guy had a line of .297/.424/.462 for an OPS of .886. His career numbers are .300/.409/.499 for an OPS of .908. This numbers are incredibly close. Plus, he had 15HR with 107RBI, the second highest RBI total of his career!! Abreu has never been a HR guy, in fact he has had three 20HR seasons, one 24, one 25, one 17, one 30 and one 31. The guy also stole 30 bases and was caught only 6 times, for a .833 percentage, the second highest of his career. Saying Abreu was done last year is like saying walks clog the bases.

by Luis on May 30, 2007 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

how about this year
.222 AVG, .602 OPS, .313 OBP

significantly increased K Rate, GB Rate

decreased BB Rate

how about that?

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 31, 2007 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Incredible
I guess I do live in a parallel world after all. Is it not enough to put the words -last year- in boldface? I was criticizing Al's assertions about Abreu's performance from last year. That was it. Period. Finito. Abreu's performance this year has nothing to do with what I wrote. I didn't even talk about Abreu coming to Chicago or anything to that effect in this thread.

by Luis on May 31, 2007 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

sorry
didnt see that you were ignoring the entire point of the topic to nitpick on one point that was essentially meaningless

if he wasnt done last year, he IS done this year

whats the point of nitpicking on this?

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 31, 2007 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Because
Saying a player is done based on his performance in 207 games (2006 + 2007) is not the same as saying he is done based on his performance in 51 games (2007). Agreed? Yes.

by Luis on May 31, 2007 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

uh yeh
but your point didnt further the conversation at all and completely ignored the "point" of the post which was that acquiring Abreu makes little sense because he's finished

it was simply nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, its like correcting someone's grammar or spelling

who cares

the point is the guy doesnt make sense as an acquisition and thats the point Al and many others were making
