Minor League Round-up: 5/4/07

So would you believe me if I told you that every team in the Cubs organization hit the crap out of the ball today? OK, how about if I ammended that to say that every team except Peoria hit the crap out of the ball.

Iowa 9 - New Orleans 6

  • Pitching Notes: Ryan O'Malley pulled a Carlos Zambrano today, blowing up in one big inning but getting the run support to notch a win. O'Malley threw 6 innings and gave up 6 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks. John Webb and Cory Bailey combined for 3 innings of hitless relief.
  • Batting Notes: Eric Patterson had a big day at the plate going 3-4 with a walk, a 2 run HR and 2 runs scored. Buck Coats went 3-4 with a 3B, 1 run scored and an RBI. Angel Pagan drew 2 walks and scored twice. Scott Moore went 3-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.
  • Fielding Notes: 3 errors today, one apiece for Patterson, Geovany Soto and Scott Moore.
  • Tennessee 16 - Birmingham 1
  • Pitching Notes: Mark Holliman continued his excellent season, surrendering only 1 earned run in 6 innings of work. He gave up 6 hits, 1 walk while striking out 4. Greg Reinhard threw two innings of two-hit ball and was followed by Tim Leyden who threw a scoreless 9th, also allowing 2 hits.
  • Hitting Notes: Hmmmm, where to begin. How 'bout Matt Craig who went 3-4 with 2 walks, a 3 run HR, 2 runs scored and 6 RBIs. Jake Fox (playing LF) went 3-6 with a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Jemel Spearman went 2-3 with 2 walks, a double, 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. CF Sam Fuld went 3-6 in the leadoff spot, scoring 2 runs. RF Josh Kroger went 2-5 with a walk, scored 2 and drove in 2. C Chris Robinson went 3-6, scored a run and drove in 2. Brian Dopirak even took advantage of the Barons pitching woes, going 3-6 and getting his season average all the way up to .206. 21 hits in total for the Smokies today.  
  • Daytona 7 - St. Lucie 6 (10)
  • Pitching Notes: Jeff Samardzjia had a bit of a rough day today surrendering 5 runs on 11 hits in 5 innings. 0 walks and 3 K's for Samardzjia. He was followed by fellow ND alum Grant Johnson who didn't fare much better, giving up 1 run on 3 hits in 1.1 innings. Jerry Belvins pitched 2 solid innings of relief, only surrendering 1 hit and striking out 3. Jon Mueller pitched a scoreless 10th and got the W.
  • Hitting Notes: Leadoff man Chris Amador went 3-6 smacking his 3rd HR of the season. He drove in 2 and scored 2 runs. Alberto Garcia went 3-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Ryan Harvey went 2-4 with a double and a walk. Tyler Colvin had a feast or famine day going 2-6 with a double and 3 Ks. Since we like walks we need to mention Matt Matulia and Nate Spears, who both walked twice.
  • Fielding Notes: Nate Spears complimented his 2 walks with 2 errors. 3 DPs turned by Daytona and Chris Amador nailed a runner at the plate.
  • Fort Wayne 3 - Peoria 2 (11 Innings)
  • Pitching Notes: Marco Carillo had a solid start, throwing 5 scorless innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 2. Jayson Ruhlman had a tough 6th inning, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Oscar Bernard threw 2 scoreless innings. Rocky Roquet came in for 2 innings of relief, gave up nothing except a walk while striking out 2. Ft. Wayne broke through in the 11th, scoring the winning run with one out off of Jeremy Papelbon.
  • Hitting Notes: Wellington Castillo and Russell Canzler each went 2-4 with a walk and a run scored. DJ Lewis and Yusuf Carter each went 1-4 with RBIs (Lewis also took a walk). Dylan Johnston went 1-3 with a walk and a double. 21 runners were stranded today between the two teams.
