Iowa 3 - New Orleans 2
Pitching Notes: Well it was a good day for both potential #5 starters. Carlos Marmol threw seven solid innings, allowing 2 runs (both solo HRs) on 4 hits, walking none and striking out 9. Frederico Baez, Carmen Pignatiello and Cory Bailey combined to throw 2 scoreless innings in relief. Bailey got the save, retiring one batter.
Batting Notes: Angel Pagan went 2-5 with a double and a HR. Carlos Marmol helped himself going 2-2 with a double and a run scored. Anthony Richie, newly promoted from Tennessee went 2-4 with an RBI. Geovany Soto actually played 1B today with Richie catching and went 1-4 with a walk. One has to wonder if Soto is being given some versatility training in advanced of a call-up. Iowa left ten men on base today.
Tennessee 10 - Birmingham 3
Pitching Notes: Sean Gallagher notched his third win of the season. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) 8 hits, 1 walk and 5 Ks. Billy Petrick threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1. Adalberto Mendez struck out 2 in inning of relief.
Hitting Notes: Jake Fox was found out in right field today and he responded with a 3-4 day, hitting a double, scoring 1 and driving in 3. Matt Craig went 0-2 but he did walk 3 times. LF Jorge Cortes went 3-5 with a double. Jemel Spearman went 2-5 with a triple, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Brian Dopirak went 1-4 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.
Other Notes: Casey McGehee, recently demoted from AAA and typically an infielder started this game at catcher. He had an error.
Daytona 4 - Tampa 1
Pitching Notes: Scott Taylor started for Daytona and threw 6 shut-out innings, giving up 4 hits while striking out 6. Jerry Blevins notched his 5th save of the season, giving up 1 hit and striking out 2 over 1.2 innings. Blevins has gone under the radar but he's had an excellent season thus far and system wide, I've been impressed at the low walk totals.
Hitting Notes: 1B Alberto Garcia went 2-4 with a HR and a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Matt Matulia went 2-4 with an RBI. 2B Nate Spears went 1-2 with 2 walks and a run scored.Ryan Harvey went 1-4 with a run scored and Tyler Colvin went 1-4 with 2Ks. While we've been lauding Colvin is should ne noted that he's struck out 20 times while walking 4 times in 94 at-bats. Thats certainly nothing to write home about.
Ft. Wayne 6 - Peoria 4
Pitching Notes: Billy Muldowney had a short outing, pitching 2 innings and surrendering 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with three strike-outs. This was Muldowney's first start since coming off the DL, so that likely is why he had an abbreviated outing. Jose Pina, who has been a starter all season came on in relief, threw 4 innings, gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with three Ks. Jayson Ruhlman gave up 1 run in 1 inning of work and Ale Maestri pitched a perfect inning, striking out 2. Peoria pitching did not surrender any walks.
Hitting Notes: Yusuf Carter, leading off today went 2-5 with a run scored. 3B Josh Lansford went 2-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. DJ Lewis went 1-3 with 2 walks. Peoria actually got base runners today, unfortunately 11 were stranded.
