Des Moines tips?

My first diary post...

My wife and I will be going to the Iowa Cubs game on Memorial Day.  Just wanted to see if anyone had any tips on seeing the I-Cubs or what to do / where to eat in Des Moines?

Thanks so much.

If you're willing to go a little bit out of town..
Rubes Steakhouse is at the first exit on I-80 heading west once you get out of town (exit 117, probably 15-20 minutes from downtown).  You pick your steak from their meat counter, then you grill it on their charcoal pit in the back.  Best meat you will ever have--I recommend the bacon wrapped ribeye--incredible.

Isn't that place right next to a Casino?

no
It's right next to a Kum & Go.  But it is the best steak house in town because you have no one to blame for it being too done when you like it mooing.

I believe there is...
a place with the same name near the town of Tama straight east of Des Moines, you pick out and cook your own steaks. It's was worth the trip just get a great steak. There is a Casino there which I spent to much time at while in college at Iowa State.

Correct- the town is Montour
and that's the original Rube's. Great place. You can also blow some $$ at the Tama Casino.

There are a lot of bars and eateries within walking distance of the ball park.

There are two

Rube's, one by Tama and the one west of Des Moines on I-80, only 15 minutes from the park. It's the Waukee exit, and yes there is a Kum and Go there. Both are the same, cook your own style.

Travel
I-235 is torn up in some spots as well, so check out http://www.i235.com/ for a list of open exits.  Most of the downtown exits to the I-cubs are open.

Blue Mike
would suggest that you say Hello to Matt Murton.

If you time it right, you might want to eat in the Amana Colonies.  Not the super deals that they once were, but still very good, very reasonable and very worth visiting.

They are right off I-80 just a little past the Athens of the Plains (that would be Iowa City)

See the science museum if you have the time
If you have kids go to the science museum downtown. It is very close to the ballpark. Downtown Des Moines has been undergoing a revival, but it hasn't resulted in too many restaurants that are open for dinner. Most of the stuff right downtown close up at rush hour except the really pricey stuff. You can poke around and find something though. If you are staying in Des Moines ask the hotel staff. I use them everytime I am traveling, they usually have great ideas off the beaten path.

Worth mentioning
Is that there's a Chic-Fil-A in Des Moines.

Ball park food
in Des Moines is really good, you'll be surprised. But, expect to pay major league prices. There's not a bad seat at Principal Park, take a walk out in right where there is a new stand up patio above the scoreboard to watch games, new fountain there also. Plenty for kids to do also. If you don't like your seat angle, stand behind home plate above the lower level of seats, nice patio to watch the games from; usually a TV on with the bigs Cubs too!

check out El Bait Shop
over 100 American microbrews on tap and probably another 100 in bottles.  They also have a smoker out back and they incorporate their smoked meats into Mexican dishes.  It's a very unique place with the best salsa ever.  Best part is that it's almost right across the street from the stadium.
