SI.Com Rich Hill Profile

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/luke_winn/05/07/cubs/index.html?eref=si_topstories

Nice profile, even though the writer has to smear the rest of the staff to support his thesis with throwaway lines.

I think our starting pitching staff has been doing the job expected of them. With the bats producing, and if the bullpen starts to lock down, we should give the division a run.

Thanks!
This'll make for some good commuter reading on my way home from work. I already see myself growing annoyed based on the term "unexpected ace" used in the headline. Um, how many people projected Hill to have a great year?

stifle your ire
he's the "unexpected ace", because any sane cub fan expected Zambrano to be the ace of the pitching staff like he's been for the past three years.

And when all is said and done, I'm confident that will be the case once again.

It will be the case
but Hill is going to end up doing really well himself.  If Z gets himself right while Lilly and Marquis are still pitching well this staff could be absolutely dominant.

agreed
Hill has done quite well so far...better than I, or most people thought he could....but I'm waiting for the summer heat when the wind consistently blows out. He's had more than a few deep flies that would have been homers in july end up dying on the warning track: that deep flyout by austin kearns with the bases loaded comes to mind.

OK, I read the article last night...
...and my ire is indeed stifled.

The article is actually a pretty balanced, fairly benign look at Filthy Rich. Even though I've read some biographical accounts of Hill before, I didn't know that he:

  • Listens to either U2, Audioslave or the Red Hot Chili Peppers before a start,
  • Plays guitar -- right-handed, and
  • Throws lefty because, while a kid, his brothers tied his right arm behind his back and forced him to throw with his left one (WTF?).
The only word choice I'd dispute in the article is the author's description of Marquis' 2-2, 2.82 ERA season performance thus far as "decent." I'd say that's "pretty damn good."

You mean...
they said Lilly was decent so far.  But I agree, look at his numbers - not the 2-2 record - and he's been way more than 'decent'.
