Kerry Wood In The NY Times

Fine article on Kerry Wood in the NYTimes Play Magazine.  It's heartbreaking.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/sports/playmagazine/0603play-wood.html?_r=1&ref=sports&ore f=slogin

The author seems to conclude that pitching while fatigued is the cause of most pitching injuries.  Yet he also seems to dispute the notion that minor league pitchers should be coddled and held to strict pitch counts.  I suppose he's saying that stamina must be built over years at the minor league level before a pitcher reaches the major leagues.  Interesting.

What I like
is that it is published in the future.  Is it June 3 already?

I wonder who won the Cubs-Atlanta series
It's going to be published in the Magazine on Sunday.  They often publish Magazine articles online before the print edition comes out.

RIP Kerry Wood
Good luck in the next phase of your life.  Look forward to seeing you in the broadcast booth or on ESPN someday.

Excellent article.
The guy doing the rehab with Wood says he might pitch in July. Given that this is a non-Cub source, I give him some credibility.

The bullpen could use a healthy Wood.

For Kerry's
sake I would love to see that.
According to BlueMike if you don't agree with his opinion you're an idiot or a moron.

Well written article
I hope that he can make it back. Kerry Wood truly is a good guy and it would be nice to see him out on the mound again.

Wow.
Shakespeare himself could not have written a better tragedy.  I don't know who to feel more sorry for--Kerry, or the nation of Cubs fans who will wondering "what if?" forever.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but...
'because a pitcher often tries to find an arm slot in his delivery that doesn't hurt,' isn't that what Z has been doing this year?  Pitching from a different arm slot?

It's a shame
no one could get through to Kerry about throwing accross his body.  He was going down the wrong path for a long time, and his issues were inevitable.

Wood has never been the brightest light bulb
He had profound problems with his mechanics from the very beginning.  If succumbing to elbow surgery in 1999 didn't get it through his head that he needed to change things around, then nothing would have.  And sure enough, that turned out to be true.

Kerry Wood is the biggest enigma I've ever seen in MLB in the 31 out of my 44 years on this planet that I have enthusiastically followed the game.

I think Prior is right there with him
just for different reasons.

Nice
I wish Kerry Wood all the best, and his honest humility (which, imo, cannot be faked) gives him the best chance at achieving his goals of any seriously injured player that I can think of.

A healthy Wood makes me drool at the bullpen possibilities, but alas, I doubt it. But I can't think of anyone more deserving of a successful transition to whatever good may be in store for him.
