A quick note... this will likely be my last MLR for a few months. As some know I spend my summers up north and will be leaving earlier this summer to deal with some certifications, so I'll likely be heading out on Saturday. Time doesn't allow me much internet access, which may be a good thing seeing as how the Cubs are performing through 2 months.
Lets hope for good progress for the Cubs minor leaguers and I look forward to helping keep everyone updated once I return from Siberia.
Iowa 4 - Portland 1
JR Mathes got the start and notched his 5th win of the season. He allowed 1 run on 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. Randy Wells pitched 2 shutout innings and Clay Rapada pitched a hitless 9th for his 7th save.
Hitting Notes: Scott Moore went 2-3 with a walk and 2 doubles. Felix Pie had another great night, going 2-5 with 2 RBIs. Micah Hoffpauir and Geovany Soto also had 2-hit nights.
Tennessee 5 - West Tennessee 1
Pitching Notes: A solid outing by Donnie Veal who pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. Jerry Blevins and Geoffrey Jones each contributed a scoreless inning of relief.
Hitting Notes: Well, enough to get the job done. Casey McGehee had 4 RBIS, going 2-4 with 2 doubles. Sam Fuld went 2-4 with 2 runs scored. Joe Simokaitis went 1-1 with 2 walks as this team scored 5 runs while only getting 5 hits.
Brevard County 5 - Daytona 1
Pitching Notes: Well considering Scott Korber gave up 11 hits and 2 walks in 4.1 IP, its surprising that he only allowd 4 ER (5 runs). Michael Phelps (1.2 IP) and Darin Downs (2 IP) contributed scoreless relief.
Hitting Notes: Daytona, like Tennessee, only collected 5 hits, 2 each by Matt Matulia and Brian Dopirak, who also drew a walk and scored Daytona's only run.
Peoria 4 - Cedar Rapids 3
Pitching Notes: Well, Peoria has a new starter, Miguel Cuevas Novas. He only lasted 3.2 innings in his season debut, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks, while striking out 4. Jeremy Papelbon pitched 3 scoreless innings for the win, though he did allow an inherited runner to score, garnering a blown save.
Hitting Notes: A few guys had solid nights. Jonathan Mota went 3-5 with a run scored. Yusuf Carter went 3-5 with an RBI. Wellington Castillo went 2-4 and the Josh Lansford drew 2 walks despite going 0-3.
Other Notes: Not sure how long Dylan Johnston will be at SS as he committed his 16th error of the season.
