Cub Fans

I'll say one thing about the "fight" between Zambrano and Barrett, it has brought me back to paying some attention to the Cubs.

This started me thinking, am I a real Cub's fan? I lost interest very quickly in this team with their horrid start. I start the season honed in on all aspects of the team. It is so true " hope springs internal". We go through April with hopes they will rebound from a not so good start. May comes around, they show some life, albeit short lived.

As May continues on, they lose many more than they win. "Well, I have the lawn to cut, things to do". "Say, what did the Cubs do today"? I continue to check the box scores, read this site as well as the papers and the Cub's site. I am thinking, "of course I am a fan". I still stay up to date with them, even though I have no time to watch them.

Being honest, the past week or so I even stopped reading and basically not paying them no mind. In a strange way I feel guilty. Maybe I am not a fan at all. Why should I waste my time (which for whatever reason when you're older, there seems less of it) on them.

I try to justify my lack of interest by thinking I just can't handle the watching year after year of the Cubs just not competing, but just playing embarrassing baseball. Believe this or not, I am still  suffering from '69. Silly isn't it?

After reviewing the game log, man I think there are a lot of fans like myself out there. Some very funny stuff is written on the game tread. The comment " I am done with them" is echoed through out the tread. But are you done? Am I done?

So, to Barrett, Zambrano a thank you. If you don't tussle, I ask the question, " so who won today"

I don't
want to come off as a "hate mongering" troll by only taking interest in a fight. I am hoping this incident will be the start of some serious changes on this roster. I have maintained all along they need to "tweak the team" for it to be better.

I have said this before, I would prefer watching a team with a Pie and other young players lose, rather than watching has been vet's lose.

Your point is taken.
And frankly, the team was doing better when Pie was here. It's time for him to come back.

Yes. Bring back Pie.
At least the team had some youthful enthusiasm.  Was the winning record the Cubs spotted while he was here solely due to his efforts?  Probably not.  But what else can they do while grasping for straws ...?  Hell, it can't hurt more than losing.

As for your other idea, I'm afraid the time for "tweaking" may have already passed.  I hope I'm proven wrong, but ...

It can't be strictly coincidence.
Cubs record with Pie: 11-9
Cubs record without Pie: 11-22

I hear he'll be back tomorrow. Not a moment too soon.

I can only.....
hope that management reads this diary.

Cubs fans have been pushed to the edge.  It is time for management to show that they are committed to the 40K who pay top dollar to see this team.  Enough is enough.

I agree with you.
At the very least, send a message that incidents like yesterday's won't be tolerated by getting rid of the players involved. Yes, both of them.

God Al.....
it is a miracle isn't it?

Maybe I will stop by and buy you a beer today.  As long as you promise not to strangle me......;)

I blame it on Zambrano
Im gonna have to disagree with Lou. I just watched a video and hes like "its about time we get someone that doesnt make throwing errors and runs the bases correctly like a major leaguer." Zambrano had NOOO right to throw a punch at Barrett! Im sorry but zambrano isn't exactly perfect either. He's a 5-5 pitcher. Hes given up his fair share of home runs. Barrett made one bad play. Ok humans aren't perfect everyone makes mistakes. why doesn't zambrano punch eyre in the face for making the mistake and giving up that homerun and losing that game?? We would've won that.. why doesn't lou yell at eyre for making that mistake in a game we would've won? and not barrett for making one bad play that usually doesnt happenn...

What????
"and not barrett for making one bad play that usually doesnt happen..."

Have you been watching Barrett behind the plate since he's been here?? He's constantly making Little League mistakes.

come onn..
yeah but he's not the only one making mistakes! haven't you been watching our bullpen? barrett got picked off once. i promise you izturis or derosa will get picked off once this season if they haven't already. it happens to everyone. and a throwing error.. DID YOU WATCH THE PITCH ZAMBRO THREW?? It wasn't even within two feet of where barrett set up for it.. I just don't think all of the blame should be on barrett.

I'm not going
to place blame on everyone. When your a catcher you catch the damn ball, and when a ball goes in the dirt you block it with your body......every catcher since the beginning of time knows this but for some reason Einstein Gump just never learns.

Why should I sit here an excuse something that's been going on for 3 years? DeRosa and Izturis getting picked off and the bullpen sucking has nothing to do with the fact that Gump can't do his job properly.....and this is hardly the first instance in which its happened.

Gump is a perennial league leader in passed balls, he couldn't perform a rundown to save his life and up until this year 2/3 of the starting rotation wouldn't throw to him. This fight didn't occur as a result of Barrett messing up on one play, it occured because of 3 years of frustration watching Gump act like a total wank behind the plate.

how does it not compare?
how does the bullpen sucking not compare to one player doing bad? the bullpen cost us about 4 games already this year. barrett dropped a ball thrown way out of the target and had one throwing error that half the team has already in a game that we would've lost anyways. the bullpen is running us games and they don't even have a problem with it. don't worry about a catcher that has a few errors. worry about a bullpen that is gonna force this team to not making the playoffs. i don't care if you have God behind the plate, with our bullpen we aren't going anywhere.

good call..
look at today's game. just to back up the point i made. barrett not in the lineup didn't affect us at all.. but what did?? oh. just maybe WILL OHMANS run given up in the 8th after the cubs tie the game up. don't worry about barrett and zambrano. worry about getting some damn relievers that can do their own job. Apparently that's a little more important.

Give the Cubs some credit...
...at least they keep the season interesting while they're playing awful baseball. I hear a couple of the position players on the Reds got into a heated exchange during one of their clubhouse parcheesi matches. Apparently the word "Goshdarn" was used.
