Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was traded to the Padres on Wednesday, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
It wasn't known immediately what the Cubs will receive in return for dealing their controversial catcher.
Good.

I just heard the same
Also this is interesting in that I would have never thought Hendry would trade one of his favorite players. Just wondering out loud if this has anything to do with the Zambrano negotiations? Did Z say there was no way he would resign if the Cusb retained Barrett?

New update.....
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2910079
This seems right: Bowen, a minor leaguer and cash. The Cubs and Barrett have diminished his value. Linebrick in this deal, IMHO, was never a possibility.
Overall, this is a good deal for the Cubs. Addition by subtraction.

I think I agree
Addition by Subtraction
Sosa, Patterson, Walker, Williamson, etc.

whatever
Curious....
Does that scream prospects? IMHO, Hendry did okay on this one.

considering
Me thinks.....
I can't see how he can catch with his back problem.
As for Bowen, IMHO, it just shows how difficult it is to acquire quality catchers.

yeah you guys are right

re: whatever
Bad trade?
This was taken off of the ESPN website.
I don't know about you guys but in my opinion this will be a very bad trade on the Cubs. The way Barrett is hitting and stuff.. I don't mind getting rid of him becasue of chemistry but I think the Cubs should get a little bit more than bowen and a minor league pitcher.

Hendry makes good deals
Let's just hope all the people screaming about how much Barretts defense was hurting us were right. We're about to find out.
Barrett's not hitting.
Bowen in 82 AB: .268/.371/.439
Bowen is five years younger with more upside. Barrett has baggage. As I said, I like Michael, but it was time for him to go.
FWIW, Bowen will have to change uniform numbers. His SD number: 14.
Barrett will hit eventually though
Bowen meanwhile will regress to the mean.
Bowen is a solid backstop, and it will be nice to have another switch hitter in the lineup, but I wouldn't describe someone whose last 2 teams were waiver claims as someone with upside.
"Regress to the mean"?
If he were 30 (as Barrett is) I'd agree with you, but Bowen is 26.
Look at his minor league stats
I hope I'm wrong, I really do, and he comes here and continues to hit .280 while providing above average defense behind the plate.
I just hope
Finally Got One Right
Seriously, I liked Barrett, but his baseball IQ left a lot to be desired, especially when he plays the position that requires it. I'll miss his guts and sporadic clutch hitting, but he needed to post Piazza-esque numbers to offset his egregious offensive and defensive mistakes. I can't wait to see the reaction of Padres' fans when Barrett overruns third base for the first time.
bummed.
Our team ERA is ranked 5th in the NL. Other than San Diego and LA, no team in the NL has given up fewer runs than the Cubs. But we had to trade our catcher? Barrett had become the whipping boy and a victim of groupthink.
We need hitting and Barrett was finally starting to show some life at the plate. Not a fan of this trade, and I remain convinced that this was Lou's doing.

The decision not to re-sign Barrett
Maybe it is a bit knee-jerk, but I can understand why they wanted to do this now, rather than let the situation fester until the trade deadline, hoping for a bit more in return.
This team
Minor Leaguer Acquired: Kyler Burke
2006 first round compensation pick for the Padres. Burke was the 35th overall pick in the draft out of Ooltewah (TN) High School.
Kyler Burke, a big-time two-way high school baseball star, could potentially have been drafted as either a southpaw starter or as an outfielder. His senior season, however, laid any doubts to rest about his future in baseball.
Currently batting .211 in the minors.
Just wondering...
i cant wait

Barrett's bat.....
The value he has is as a catcher. I am honestly shocked that any contender would have him catch and give away games.

The White Sox....
If a team thinks they can win with Barrett as a DH in the AL, I would like to see it.

OK, raise your hand.
Give me a break. You people (by "you people", I'm referring to those who are reading this and KNOW that I am talking to them) are unbelievable, I don't think I could go a day that cynical and despondent. Geez. ill miss you barrett
i also seen
They needed bullpen help.
My question is, although I know the bullpen has been better as of late, why would the Cubs not try to get another quality bullpen arm in the deal? OK, a backup catcher is fine, but I would have insisted on another pitcher too....even a minor league guy. Oh well.
Yes Koyie's .160 BA
As for a bullpen pitcher. Hendry probably asked and SD said no. Hendry was stuck if he really needed to get rid of Barrett.
Agreed on the bullpen thing...
One of Hendry's failings has been that he's never been good at evaluating players. This manifests itself in many ways, one of which is not knowing when to trade a player. He has waited to long to trade several players in the recent past: Patterson, Prior, Cruz, Jones, Dopirak, etc. Those players either wound up getting traded for scraps or wound up never being traded at all and festering within the Cubs organization. Barrett appears to be another example of Hendry's ineptitude at timing trades so that he's not "selling low."
Okay wait
I really hope...
Hmm..
He's been injured
by Josh Timmers on Jun 20, 2007 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Perhaps...
This shows
So here is a question..
I will actually miss Barrett...didn;t realize that last night would be his last as a Cub. Hey, at least he caught a win. And I believe he went 2-4 with RBI (?). Best of luck (except against the Cubbies) in the future to him. I hope he succeeds. I will always remember his contribution to the "___ AJ Pierzynski" fan club.
Addition by subtraction
For Hendry to trade away one of his pets, is encouraging more than anything the Cubs could've gotten in return.
Great trade.

Why was Barrett traded? Here are 5 reasons...
1. Passed Ball is charged to Barrett and Connine scores go ahead run.
"My job right there is to keep the ball in front of me, no matter what," Barrett said. "I didn't get the job done."
May 8th: Pirates score in 9th, sending the game into extras where the Cubs go scoreless, losing 4-3 in 15.
2. A throwing error by Barrett sends the go ahead run to third base in the 15th inning, ultimately allowing the winning run to score on a sacrifice fly.
May 27th: Leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the 8th, Dodgers score once, and again in the 11th. Cubs lose 2 to 1.
- Barrett caught attempting to steal third base in second inning with one out.
- Later in bottom of the 11th fails to catch Martinez in a rundown between second and third base. This leads to an intentional walk to Furcal, which loads the bases and the next batter Pierre is hit by the pitch, winning the game for the Dodgers.
5. Barrett drops ball, allowing slowest runner but winning run to score in 13th inning.
I wish him well in San Diego
Great post
Plenty of Blame to go around..
April 5th - Bullpen was less than stellar(walks, hits, wild pitches). Was this the game where Lou said the Bullpen was throwing 30-40 foot curveballs? Barrett's error hurt but the bullpen struggled.
May 8th - Offense went 8 scoreless innings after the 7th. Then the next night Soriano woke up in the first with an HR and then the offense fell back asleep for the rest of the game. We should have won that game.
May 27th - How many times have you seen D-Lee get gunned out at 3rd with less than 2 outs? I really hate it when Aramis then belts a homer. I will never understand that. Also, bases loaded, hit by pitch. enough said.
June 12th - I am pretty sure this is one of the games with bases loaded and no outs and no runs. Barrett's error proved to be costly but stranding 3 with no outs should be a crime in itself.
My point is that Barrett's errors were always the most visible but other factors were never taken into consideration.

Andy Masur
Andy, that's some masterful spinnin' there!
He also blamed the fight w/Z entirely on Z.
Guess Masur didn't know about the bonehead plays that preceeded it, and he conveniently forgot about Barrett's clash with Hill. (Yeah, I'm sure he didn't know. Yeah, right.)
Concluding with:
Yeah, if you like a backstop with his head up his ass, you'll love Mr. Barrett!!
It didn't take long for Masur to become a hometown honk.
But -- Andy knows who is signing his paycheck.

Dumb trade...
Why not let his numbers continue to rise and put him on the market when the buyers are established and actually get a decent return?
by thekansasian on Jun 21, 2007 1:09 AM CDT reply actions
Re
In spite of how nice a guy everyone says Barrett is, his 'development' has resulted in a catcher who simply doesn't think. The most important thing for Lou to do is get this team to play solid, fundamental baseball, and it's clear that Barrett's unable to do that.
There's also the fact that he didn't have the confidence of his pitching staff, and that the Cubs had to move at least one of Z and Barrett after their dustup earlier in the month. Z has apparently used the incident to turn his own performance around and realize he had to grow up. Barrett, OTOH, continued to make bonehead plays and cost the team runs, if not games.
So - best wishes to Barrett as a member of the Friars, but this move improves the Cubs simply because it lances a boil that's been festering, and sends a message that the game starts with solid, fundamental baseball.

I can't believe these reactions
"Hard Work"
That's the type of guy I want, only younger. Is Bowen that? Probably not. But this is all Barrett is worth on the open market.
Good luck to the Friars when Hoffman's cut fast ball is in the dirt in a crucial situation.
I will chronicle Barrett's miscues and post them when they happen....

And he's struck out in both of his at-bats so far today.
