Sticking with the "Kids"

Ooofff.   Pie and Theriot are not getting it done in June. Well that's not entirely true now is it. Theriot did lay down that bunt to win game 2 vs. the Sox and Pie did score the run in game three. Pie did walk and Theroit was playing great defense at third.

Both men have been cold at the plate though 0-14 for Theriot and Pie is 6-43. Yikes!

But it seems that it isn't such a big deal for some reason. Last year the Cubs faithful would have been screaming for them to be sent down to AAA and bringing up anyone that's hitting (Cedano?). It seems that the current management is showing patience.

My pick to click in the up-coming series vs. Colorado is both Pie and Theriot. They will prove to management that they belong and they worked out their problems. They will reward Lou P. for sticking with them. I personally like both players, they both bring a nice energy to the field and are fun to watch, along with Fontenot.

BTW Al do you recall my posting saying the Cubs will be playing the suddenly cold Rockies? Looks like the Cubs might be catching these guy's at the right time. If they take the approach that got them through the Sox series. Like you said "good things WILL happen".

They deserve their chance
to keep playing, but we need those veterans to go in there and keep the momentum going. These kids need a day off here and there and the mix of young/old is entirely what this team needs. I'm confident Pie and Theriot will get it back going soon. We must take 2 of 3 vs. the Rockies.

Agreed.
During the Sox series, when some players faltered (Derrek Lee didn't really have a very good series), others picked up the slack. This is how good teams win. 2 of 3 vs. Colorado is imperative, a sweep would be great.

All I ask...
Is that the Cubs are .500 by the All-Star Break.
Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs will make three errors today.

That would mean...
... going 9-4 over the 13 games that remain before the ASB (it would make them 44-43).

Exactly...
Especially since after Milwaukee, the Cubs have seven games at Washington and Pittsburgh.

win each series to the Break...
2-1 vs CO...2-1 vs Milw...3-1 vs Wash...2-1 vs Pitt

odds are not in favor...I can see 8-5 or 7-6 but the Cubs are getting close to having to make a move to reclaim this season.

I can actually see them sweep CO and beat Milw 2-1 going to Wash 5-1...split with Wash 7-3 and then losing that series finishing 8-5 and 21-15 since June 1st. and 43-44....but still 6-7 games back...yet still in striking distance.

Cubs need to make a roster change. I was exchanging emails this morning and we were wondering if the ChiSox would take Floyd, Murton & Jones (9M in salary) plus A-level prospect for Posednek and Dye ($10M in salary). ChiSox get three OF'ers for two.

Cubs then could platoon Pods and Dye in RF.

Harry Carey: 3 & 2, 2-out, no place to put him...tying run on 3rd...winning run on 2nd...THE PITCH....HEE POOOOPPPED....IT UP!

The only problem with the kids
are that there too many weak holes in the lineup.  When Ramirez gets back in the field, that will help.  When Hill/Bowen, Theriot/Izturis, Pie and Fontenot (once he gets back to expectations) are all in the lineup that is 4 questionable spots.  Against the White Sox, it doesn't matter since they can't hit, against better hitting teams it will be a problem if they can't score runs.

Then get better kids.
Geovanny Soto, as noted around here, is ripping the cover off the ball; Ronny Cedeno is crushing it, BADLY... E-Pat has cooled a bit, but I still think he's got the talent to do well in the majors.

i dont know
with soriano heating up sparking the offense from the leadoff spot, and the meat of dlee, aramis and floyd i think the offense should be all right.  i like having guys like pie and theriot who you dont have to rely on in the bottom of the order, but who still have the ability to spark the team.  its not like having cedeno and neifi at the bottom who you know have no chance of getting on base.  i think the offense will be fine.
DON'T TRADE PIE!

very apt point
we may have just swept the Sox but at the same time, we only scored 10 runs in 3 games.

While many here were extremely in favor of the Barrett trade this was something that left the offense extremely thin. We basically have gaping holes offensively at C, SS, CF and the P's slot. Having 4 gaping holes offensively in 9 slots is a big problem and this doesnt even count RF where Floyd's inevitable regression in batting average and his inability to hit for power (.404 slugging anyone? and you people killed Murton for not enough power career .441 Slugging)

For this team to have success they need the pitching to continue to be dominant, which has a chance with Z, Hill and Lilly all pitching well (the Marshall and Marquis regressions will come soon) and the bullpen becoming as good as we originally hoped (which it has of late and should be the rest of the way)...

I just dont see how they can score enough runs unless DLee, Aramis, and Soriano are all swinging hot sticks, because as we've all noted in the past this team isnt very good at manufacturing runs

I guess
It's nice that the Cubs have someone hot while the younger guys have a chance to get back in the game. I don't want Pie and Theriot ripping the cover off the ball in AAA I want it in the "Show". D Lee didn't have a good series, it seems the hole he had while with the Marlins has come back. He needs to close that hole in his swing again.

I'm looking for other to get hot for this series.

6-01-2007 the Cubs begin to rise. They will never look back.

Youth = Speed
Despite some boneheaded base running I think the Sox series pointed out the greatest strength of youth, speed.  Speed on the bases made for some bad throws and bad plays by the Sox and helped to make up for poor batting (other than A-Ram ... great to see him back despite his knee not being 100%).
