Wood to have bullpen session

The Tribune reported today that Kerry Wood was scheduled to have his first bullpen session since spring training. With the rain, it's unclear if he got it in today or if he had to wait until tomorrow. It's possible he did it indoors.

Anyway, I like Kerry a lot and hope he makes it back. The Tribune says he's eyeing an early-August return after a minor league rehab. However, given his history, I doubt he'll get through the minor league rehab without re-injuring himself.

I wonder if he's one more injury away from announcing his retirement at age 29. More and more, he's looking like this era's Mark Fidrych (although he did have a few effective years in the majors, unlike Fidrych, who only had one. Fidrych's one year, however, was far better than any of the healthy years Kerry had.)

What did he hurt originally.......
IIRC wasn't it just tendinitis?

Yeah.
But I remember reading that it was very severe tendinitis.

i hope to god
that he can come back but all these injuries behind  him and be a solid RP or even closer for the rest of his career(with the cubs). I kinda feel bad for him. Prior on the other hand, see you later

Why do people like Prior better than Wood?
They've done the same thing basically.

Basically I think.......
it boils down like this. Wood says all the right things in the press and Prior doesn't say anything. One earns a free pass and the other one doesn't.

Backwards, but a good question.
Wood has had catastrophic injuries to his elbow and shoulder, has had surgeries, and came back once. We know he's tough, he's a gamer, he shouldered a ridiculous amount of the burden down the stretch in 2003, etc. We went through the battles with Wood, and won some memorable ones.

We only had Prior for a couple of glorious seasons, and then it all went to hell. The meme surrounding Prior was that he was not actually hurt, that he was a 'pansy', or that he was a steroid abuser. It seems that the Cubs front office has indirectly fed these rumors, or at least failed to categorically deny them. As we now know, Prior needed shoulder surgery - similar to what Chris Carpenter underwent after his time in Toronto.

I think Prior has gotten a raw deal from Cub fans, and I hope that Prior has a Carpenter-like resurgence... I just hope that he does it without wearing the birds on the bat. That would suck tremendously.

Prior got a big time raw deal.......
but I'm still hopeful things will work out with him in Chicago. I think being out from the microscope for a season might be the best thing for him. There's going to be new ownership, a new manager.....so basically its a change of scenery in a sense.

I've wanted to point this out...
for a while, but why do people say Wood is tough? He's had setbacks that if Prior had them, he would once again continue to be called weak or whatever.

I defend Prior because I think it's unfair that(in general)one gets bashed and the other one is loved and gets a pretty big pass. They both have done very little for this Cubs team lately, but they did BOTH  help the Cubs to the playoffs in 03 and that was awesome. I love them both very much, and I just want to see them treated fairly, which is probably not a great treatment since after 03 all they have brought are distractions and disappointments.

Sorry for my rants.

I also think the fact that Kerry
was willing to take a pay cut and said something about feeling he owes the club played a role in that. Prior pitched 43 innings in 2006 and asked for a raise.

by Scott on Jun 26, 2007 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, his agent asked for a raise
and that's exactly what agents do

by DTJchris on Jun 26, 2007 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Still
He could have told his agent not to. He is that person's boss, isn't he?

I know I would have been embarrassed to have someone working for me make outrageous demands on my behalf. And I wouldn't let it happen.

It wasn't outrageous.
He certainly didn't deserve a raise, but it's not like he was asking for a 6 million dollar raise.

For those of us............
.........in the REAL world of work, asking for a raise on the basis of a Prior-esque performance would ensure a quick exit from the employer.

Whether his agent or otherwise, it was a classless move to seek any additional money.  After all, he's probably just barely scraping buy on what he already has..........

IMO
Wood tries his very best to take the ball and help out the team.  Yeah, he's been stubborn about adjusting his mechanics in order to stay healthy.  Prior,IMO, has looked for reasons NOT to pitch.  He's a prima donna that will not pitch unless he feels perfect. I hope Wood can get healthy and pitch again for the Cubs.  As for Prior, I hope he can get healthy enough so can trade him.

Finding reasons not to pitch???
Did you miss the part where Dr. Andrews opened up Prior's shoulder and found significant damage?? 99.9% of the questions regarding Prior's desire to pitch were answered on that day. I'm not sure if you forgot about it. You don't have to like Prior, and he may never make it back to what he once was but can we please move past the "he doesn't want to pitch" shit???
