Steve Stone on the fight

Thought I'd post this in case some are still wondering about the details. On Steve Stone's segment Monday on 670, he provided some details on the altercation. After Zambrano approached Barrett to berate him, Barrett wasn't pointing at the scoreboard, but at DeRosa to say "he saw the same sign I did", as Barrett was expecting a different pitch than what was thrown. And when Barrett went into the clubhouse, Stone says Barrett went in to smooth things over and Zambrano sucker punched him several times and cut up his lip.

 So there you go.

That description...
... makes some logical sense. Sounds like Z might be the one who has to go.

Neither needs to go
The players have already moved on. The fans should follow their lead.

I Couldn't Disagree More
Your posts are almost always spot on but I disagree on this one.  I think the fight alone isn't enough reason to dump Z, it is just the most recent example of a grown man with the emotional stability of a child.  All the talent in the world but no ability to channel it is, I'm afraid a major issue and one which should be passed on to someone else for the highest price possible.

In Barrett's case, his poor defensive play is far outweighing is offensive potential.  If his hitting woes continue for much longer, I think it would be very wise to shop him around prior to the trading deadline.  I think we could get a prospect or two for him and if our scouts are any good they probably already have scenarios worked out in the front office.

And so it goes.

I respect
the opinions of Al and you and the others who feel that way. I really do. And I agree that Zam's year has been inadequate along with Barrett. So if it continues, then I can get behind the trade scenario.

However, as a player and coach, I've seen a ton of altercations between teammates. Maybe 90% occur when the team is going poorly. In almost all cases, they're forgotten and everyone moves on. There is a culture of this within sports.

Let's see what happens in the future before we begin casting aside who were very valuable players prior to this year. PS. I'm not terribly comfortable with allowing Hendry to get fair value for anyone this year.

According to...
... this article, Lou met with both of them and it is, in fact, a thing of the past.

Koyie Hill will catch Z tomorrow (day game after night game), but Barrett will catch Z after that.

I never thought
Barrett was pointing at the scoreboard. Derosa was standing in the on-deck circle which is not in the same direction as the scoreboard. The scoreboard would've been more in front of Barrett than perpendicular.

No one here ever discussed much that the passed ball might've been Z's fault for missing the sign. It makes more sense that the guy reading the sign would misinterpret it than the guy who gave the sign in the first place. I'm guessing Z would've been upset if he thought he hit his spot and Barrett still missed the ball. That's why Barrett would've tried to explain what happened.

I really like Z. I actually still want him to stay. And I'm not a huge Barrett fan, but this one looks like it's on Z. But he has taken the blame and I don't remember him doing this before so, my guess is that this will blowover in a few weeks.

Nobody is holding Ted Lilly's outburst last year against him because he's done well. My guess is that if Z starts heating up, we'll all get over it.

Disagree
Barrett never had time to confer with DeRosa, and he was clearly pointing at the scoreboard to let Z know he just gave up 15 hits.

I have said this before, Barrett gets crossed up more than any catcher I have ever seen, and I think he forgets what he calls half the time, and gets caught between.

I have learned to take what Stone says with a grain of salt.  He contradicts himself quite often, and a few weeks ago, was advocating signing Barrett long term.  On Monday, he was back peddling on this quite a bit.

Sorry,

Watching the tape
I just don't see how that is possible, but who knows, we are talking about the almighty - Stoney.

Stoney is right
go here scroll down and look at the stills of the fight. IMO you can tell by both players facial expressions. Barrett clearly points at DeRosa, and Z was embarrassed about it. This puts a whole new spin on things.

I don't see DeRosa
In any of the still shots, and his finger sure looks like it is pointing to the scoreboard to me.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter in the end.

DeRosa...
... isn't in the still shots. But in the video, you can see DeRosa standing right outside the dugout after the camera pulls out to a wide shot. Whether he was standing there the entire time, I do not know.

Could Barrett have been
pointing to the position that DeRosa was playing instead of where DeRosa was actually standing at the moment of the fight?

by NO100 on Jun 6, 2007 9:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't think it really matters
but while we are on the topic.  I didn't see that game live, after Barrett was crossed up, and threw the ball into left field, did he go out and talk to Zambrano and find out what happened with the pitch?  If not, it tells me one of two things, there is such a disconnect between the two, that neither one really cared to find out what happened, or Zambrano threw what Barrett called and he just missed it.  Either way, it ain't a good sign.

I read that Michael
went into the clubhouse to smooth things over and Z just laid into him so that is twice that has been reproted. Too bad Z couldn't control his anger. He had no one but himself to blame.

I love Steve Stone, but...
He has become a bitter little gossip monger with an apparent vendetta.  He has zero credibility within the Cub lockerroom.  Not that this matters.

The "story" is this.  Zambrano was pissed off that Barrett butchered a play or two behind the plate on a day when he was, once again, pitching like crap.  Zambrano displayed his displeasure, and Barrett responded either with words or a mannerism that sent Zambrano over the edge.  He confronted Barrett in the dugout.  When Barrett went to the clubhouse in an attempt to patch things up, Zambrano didn't want to hear it and proceeded to mop up the floor with him.  A day later they kissed and made up, at least in front of the public.  End o' story.

Unfortunately, as much as I admire Stone's work
...he's now getting paid by The Score to get ratings. Controversy sells big-time, and outside of winning a championship, this is as big as it gets. Stoney is now there to stir the pot. That's is sports radio is all about. Not necessarily the truth -- what ever sells, is what's important, be it Political or Sports Talk. If Stone didn't say anything of consequence, he wouldn't be on The Score much longer. He's no longer a reporter, or 'color' man, as he was on baseball telecasts.

He's now on The Score to register an opinion. Not necessarily facts.

The SCORE
always blows everything out of proportion, it is their niche and it ain't gonna stop any time soon.  When word spread that Hendry, McDonough and Piniella were meeting last week, they were saying on the air that Piniella was going to resign.

The SCORE is the tabloid version of sports radio, that's just the way it is.
