New Blog: Backing the Pack for NC State Fans!

ROSTER

Although I don't hate jacque like many Cub fans, I'm confused by the recent love.  Agreed he plays a average centerfield, BUT HE CAN'T THROW.  Any plus he gives us offensively is negated by his baserunning and defense.  I'll trust Pinella's judgement about Pie, but I say PLAY THE GUY EVERYDAY!  Maybe mentally he couldn't handle the lack of success.  In the mean time seems like he would learn more about hitting up here with Pinella's tutoring and Pagan is doing fine.  One last prediction.....Jermaine Dye for Ronnie Cedeno...you heard it here first.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

On Cedeno...
Unless the team has been itching to deal him and does it now because of his increased value, they're not going to trade him for another outfielder. I'd guess they're still hoping to bring Cedeno back and get some regular Offense from the SS position.

Of course, if there's a behind-closed-doors plan to get A-Rod for SS during the off season, who knows what could happen.

Jermaine Dye?
Why would the Cubs want Jermaine Dye, who is 33 and is having the worst year of his career (.214/.271/.402, Pattersonesque numbers)? Ugh.

What "recent love"?
I haven't heard or read much, if any, positive remarks about Jones -- even in light of a couple decent games before the All-Star Break. Methinks you're preaching to the converted here, my friend.

And as far as Cedeno for Dye -- why? The Cubs already have an aging, injury-prone right fielder. What, are they going to platoon Dye and Floyd and see which one shatters first?

Don't get me wrong; I actually like Cliff Floyd. I'm not exactly thrilled by his defense, but I think he still hits well and brings experience and a great attitude to the team.

As long as he's healthy, I'd like to see Uncle Cliffie get most of the starts in right with DeRosa occasionally starting against left-handed starters that Floyd has struggled against and Pagan filling in as a late-inning replacement.

Dye?
I thought the point of a mid-season trade was to make the team better not worse.

You heard it here 3rd. Dye for Cedeno? what type od drugs are you on my friend?

I'm hardly a Jacque Jones...
...supporter, but even a dead cat bounces, and so I think you could expect some offensive improvement out of Jones in the second half. This goes double if Lou thinks he's actually found something in Jones that he can tweak to get him back on-track, and supposedly they've been working on Jones's swing during BP.

As far as his defense... center field masks Jones's arm, which is his biggest defensive liability; his range and instincts are acceptable in center.

So I won't be screaming if Jones is our starter out in center for a few weeks heading toward the trade deadline, given the other considerations that the team is facing. And I'll be even happier with the arrangement if we're plugging in Soto at catcher, which is apparently being reported in the main thread.

I agree...
Jones is especially tolerable in CF considering how bad Pie has been for the past few weeks.

In May, I was one of the ones screaming for Jones to be gone and to have Pie come in.  But with Pie struggling, and considering that Jones SHOULD be a better hitter than he has been, I think he's currently the best of a limited group of options right now.

JD
By no means was I implying that I think J. Dye is the answer to our problems.  I have just heard a bunch of rumblings from Lou that he would like a righthanded bat.  With the purse strings apparently shut, Dye might be one of their few options.  It would only be a rent a player, and if he's healthy, might be just enough in a weak National League.

Julio Franco was released....
I'd take him over Dye.  Just for the novelty I suppose.
