Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants, Tuesday 7/17, 7:05 CT

Well, well, well.

Loudly, many of you said the Cubs should have signed Barry Zito this past off-season. $126 million later, the Giants have six wins from him (the same as the far-less-expensive Jason Marquis) and a 4.90 ERA, which would be by far the worst among the current Cub starters if he were on the club. His WHIP is the highest of his career and his BB/K ratio is poor.

Moral: be careful what you wish for.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Barry Zito
 B. Zito
Giants
4-3 W-L 6-9
3.48 ERA 4.90
38 SO 66
17 BB 52
6 HR 11
vs. SF -- vs. Cubs
Sean Marshall is on the same 12-day rest plan that Rich Hill was placed on after his last start. Worked pretty well for Hill; perhaps Marshall can work the same way. And let's hope his career numbers against the Giants are no indication -- he made two starts against them last year and got pounded in both of them (12.54 ERA in 9.1 IP). Barry Bonds (yes, it took me this long to mention him) is 1-for-3 off Marshall, a HR.

Zito has faced the Cubs once -- a 5-3 Cub win on June 20, 2004. Look who led off that day. The current Cub he's faced the most is Alfonso Soriano; he's handled him pretty well (5-for-36, 12 strikeouts).

New Cub Jason Kendall caught Zito for two years in Oakland. Maybe he can lend some insight to his new teammates into what Zito might throw tonight.

It's cable-only in the Chicago area; on broadcast TV in the Bay Area; and at the Mediacenter.

Two things
Is Zito's record a factor of his pitching or the general terriblness of team?

Second, is it really a good idea to have a rotation with two left handers like Hill and Marshall back to back?  Big curveballs and all?

by Arbusto on Jul 17, 2007 3:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I thought they would ...
address that at the start of the second half, something like, Z, Hill, Marquis, Lilly, Marshall, but I guess not. Oh well. Hopefully Marshall is fully rested and has pin point control tonight ;)

too bad
too bad it wasn't Hill tonight. Hill vs Zito would have been entertaining with them both throwing that that ungodly curve ball.

Dusty was desparate
for two + years here.

And, will the Hill "brothers" still be together when one is on the mound?

Hmmmm.

According to Baseball-Reference
In 2004 (Kendall's last year w/Pirates), he had a BA of .333 in 6 games, and OBP of .407

Career, its .317 and .404 OBP.

Hmmmm.

I dunno Al
If I were a betting man, I'd say Zito's ERA will be better than Marquis' after it's all said and done.  Zito has been disapointing so far, but he's still got a lot of talent and I would be surprised to see him shave a run off of that ERA before the year is over.

Lets just hope he doesn't start pitching better tonight.

One day, the dream will come true.

zito
Loudly, many of you said the Cubs should have signed Barry Zito this past off-season. $126 million later, the Giants have six wins from him (the same as the far-less-expensive Jason Marquis)

Run Support
Barry Zito: 3.74
Jason Marquis: 5.66

% of starts with 3 or fewer runs of support
Barry Zito: 61%
Jason Marquis: 37%

Nobody who wants to be taken seriously uses wins to make comparisons between pitchers Al.

by jacob on Jul 17, 2007 3:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He also pointed to a high WHIP
And high BB/K ratio.

The point is that Zito is by no means worth the money he signed for.

Whatever the metric, Jason Marquis has been a far better bargain thus far.

the greater the disappointment if that player doesn't perform. It's standard return-on-investment stuff.

Wins was the simple measure...
but Marquis outperforms Zito in ALL measures this year:

ERA:
Zito 4.90
Marquis 4.03

WHIP:
Zito 1.45
Marquis 1.32

K/BB:
Zito 66/52
Marquis 66/44

Just because they didn't score runs for him doesn't mean Zito was as good a pitcher.  There really is no defense for Zito over Marquis so far.

Bonds vs. cubs
One of my favorite Bonds moments in the last 5 years was back in 03 when Big Baby Bonds was "miffed" first that Prior had the guts to pitch him inside and brush him back and then when Zambrano struck him out he celebrated.

Bonds gave a "these young guys will learn to respect" speech and it was just more evidence that is he is a jerk.

by Willgly on Jul 17, 2007 4:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What I remember
was Zambrano snaring a line drive from Bonds (I think for a 3rd out).  Z celebrated, BB fumed.

Is tonight's game in jeopardy??
Because of rain?? Haven't had a rainout or even a delay for a while...Cubs only have one "make up'' DH sked later in season (Sept I think) vs. Cards...

Really wanna see Zito vs. Cubs and how much Kendall (presuming he arrives in time) gives our batters a good/inside scouting report on how to hit the guy...looks like a junkball pitcher these days to me if no zip on fastball.

I don't think too many knowledgeable Cub fans wanted him at the price he was asking...Zambrano will be, or should be, worth more, given that he's not on downward trend like Zito was when he entered free agency.

Actually, it's not very interesting, but I was surprised to see that the Cubs pen has the best runners stranded percentage (81.2%) in all of the land.  With the early season struggles, I would not have expected the Cubs to be in the top half of that category.

I trust JH with this one, and really a no-brainer.

When Hill suddenly blew up in San Diego coincidentally the Cubs got Bowen, did he transfer information about Hill possibly tipping pitches?

Now Cubs get Kendall the day that the Cubs play Zito...more inside information?

D-backs have hit a skid
They were hangin with LAD and Pods, but now about 2-3 GB...about the same record as Cubs 4-5 over .500....w/o anything from Randy Johnson I see them as about a .500 team, but haven't studied their lineup that closely.

I know their farm system is supposedly stocked, but not sure how many are producing at ML level besides their SS Drew.

I don't think they have the pitching depth of LA or SD, best in NL.

The Cubs have a miserable record against this team since they've come into the league.  They just seem to play us tough regardless of who's on which team ect.  Really wish we didn't have to face Webb in game 1 of series.  He just kills us, and unbeaten in his career against Cubs.

Slightly Off Topic,
but still of interest I'm sure.  It looks like Wood had his second rehab outing with AZL Cubs.  After pitching well Saturday he didn't do quite as fantastic today.  Looks as though he started the game and pitched for one inning, giving up one ER on 2 hits with no walks and a strikeout.
Hopefully he'll be able to come back for another outing and be a bit better.

There's a report
on it on The Cub Reporter by someone who saw it.  It was actually a lot better than it sounds.  The double was solid, but the RBI was a broken bat bloop single.

14 pitches.  Nine strikes, five balls.  Four of the five balls were on breaking pitches.

Wood was having trouble locating his curve, which isn't uncommon for someone just off a long injury.  The rest of it was quite promising.

I've noticed that first impressions go a long way with Cubs fans - witness Jacque Jones last year versus Theriot this year. Now, I know there are other factors, but if guys show they can produce out the gate they tend to get a longer leash from the fans when they slump.

I did mean that the ovation was great. Cubs fans have the ability to look past numbers and see the true value of a player. Frank Oral...

And I agree -- the interview was horrible. That guy is the softest spoken rock star I've ever seen.

Marmol not setting up in the 8th?
Very early for Marmol it seems.  But then again he did face their best hitters.

I'm also surprised to see Zito in still, I guess they are trying to rest the bullpen as much as they can.

Also the 7th inning interview was horrible.  I couldn't hear the guy even.

He went with the best. You dont throw Marmol out there for 1/3 of an inning. You just dont. He batted because there were two outs and it didnt matter. Should Ohman have faced Guillermo? NO! We've come back from worse, plus, guess what, we aren't going to win every single freaking game.  So what, we are losing, that does not mean we are 'regressing' or is it 'deflating'...it's a possible loss, that's all it is so far.

Kendall has a rough first day on the job, that's never happened to anyone in history.  He's barely worked anybody on the staff, his nerves are running high, and he's excited to be a Cub.

...it was a rough inning. Even good teams have those. Kendall is in a new park working with multiple new pitchers. Ohman probably got overjuiced (pun intended) pitching to Bonds and lost his control.

I realize it sounds like I'm making excuses, but I'm just tryin' to say...those guys on the field are human beings. Shit happens. This team still hung in there pretty well against Barry Zito's better stuff.

Are sick of the ledge-jumping when there's absolutely no reason to do so.

And it's not the "happy gang." It's called "realism." Teams do give up runs in "yucky" ways from time to time. Heck, the Cubs might have even scored one or two that way themselves recently.

the hole in RF
is what's creating the problem at second base. Fill RF and 2B is fine. Fontenot's not the problem, the lack of a dependable, everyday RF is.

I concur...
...if you move DeRosa back to second and have a reasonable right fielder, we're fine. And if you can get a better shortstop than Izturis so that Theriot can cover second, you're doing ok. But Fontenot at second is what's worrisome to me right now.

i think its obvious
we need an efficient lefty out of the pen. if we go down the stretch with the laughable duo of ohman and eyre we are going to have a tough time in situations like today. and keep soriano in the leadoff spot. its obvious hes not comfortable at all for whatever reason so theres no reason to mess with it. i dont see why we go changing around our lineup when things are going so good (i also didnt like it the first time lou put soriano in the five spot a few days ago, even though we won). we need to find a way to get eyre off our roster. hes wasting a spot and we basically have one lefty we can call on in a tough situation, and hes (ohman) not obviously very trustable

Kendall
Kendall did not cost us the game. If the man couldn't find the ball in the lights, then that's part of this crazy game. I had a feeling that his failure to catch that pop up would open the gates. I wish I had been wrong.
Until the Cubs learn to win by not making silly mistakes, walking guys, and failing to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves (e.g. the bottom of the 7th), then they will continue to be also-rans.
This has been the modus operandi for this team for nearly a century. And until it changes, and maybe it will this year, they will always come up short.

Lou calling for the pinch hitter...
for Kendall in the 9th... A tactical move to get the righty lefty, or a move to protect Kendall from too much criticism (assuming he makes the third out) in his first night in the pinstripes?

Just back from the game...
And I'll give my recap - Alo will give his, as always.

While MArshall did indeed pitch well enough to give his team a chance, it wasa an inauspicious start to the Jason Kendall era.

Why people gave him a standing ovation, I just can't figure. He's no savior. I was there for both Nomar's and Maddux's first starts (re-start) for the team, and they were more deserving.

The dropped throw from Sori would probably have been caught by 50% of the MLB starting catchers. It was a short-hop, but - c'mon, Jason!

The pop-up behind the plate was a game changer. Extra outs, a young pitcher, first out of the inning, and of course - this started the winning half-inning.

After Oh-MAN! got Bonds, which was terrific, he reverted to the April & May Oh-Man with two straight walks. What really blew was the first walk was issued to a pinch hitting catcher with a .222 average. Their version of Hank White.

And - he had an 0-2 count!

I then said to my brother, with Roberts up, "this guy knows how to work the count." Somehow I knew he would walk him (this is Dave Robert's thing). And he does.

I hate Oh-Man!

Anyway, irony in people chanting, "Cheater, Cheater." for Bonds - yet they are snapping his pic!

SF pitching was very good tonight, and we just weren't able to string hits in bunches.

As you probably saw, Wuertz didn't have it either.

I did not know why Kendall had to start tonight. He does not really know the staff at all...

But I am not Lou.

Sean Marshall, considering it was their Ace against our #5, did really well. BEtter than Marquis has been pitching, and he works at a nice clip. Refreshing.

O,K, That's it. We have Z and Lilly coming up!

It is July, and we're STILL IN IT! YES!

He kept taking SOOOOO long to update the Milwaukee score.
1-RUN GAMES = 12-15 | EXTRA INNINGS = 1-6 | HOME = 24-21 | updated on 7/16

Ohman sucks
everytime he comes in its a damn roller coaster, why cant the bum just throw some damn strikes to guillermo AAA rodriguez and dave roberts, theres no way you can be intimidated by them especially when your ahead in the count.  Sad to say it but just end the fontenot experience right now, hes back down to earth, hes not goin back up again, hes looked awful at the plate that last two weeks, leave derosa at second for now.
Bring back the damn cowbell!

Lou missed his spot....
Olhman said that he had waited his whole career for an oppty against Bonds....he did his job, Lou should have recognized that was all he had (mentally spent)and put in Wuertz to face the righty...

They still didnt score any runs...

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

Hill
should catch Z today; there's no need to put more importance on this trade than what already (unwisely) has been.

Go with what's been gettin' the job done.

Tinker to Evers to Chance.

It's a day game after a night game
So he probably wouldn't start anyway.

Kind of like how Al doesn't have a game recap up yet after the night game - only he doesn't have his own Koyie to back him up!
