Izturis just traded to Pittsburgh

This is not exactly surprising but the fact Fox was brought up and not Cedeno is odd to me.  Guess they wanted a RH hitting 1B backup with Lee down for the next 4 games.

The cubs get the dreaded PTBNL...

Happy
I am so happy about this trade.

My guess is Cedeno will be up in a week.  However, his bat has gone colder in the past couple weeks so maybe Lou is waiting for a spark from him?  Granted he's at .362 BA which is great, it's still dropped.

PTBNL
Maybe the PTBNL will end up being Izturis. I think this happened to the Cubs once before, when they traded Dickie Noles for a PTBNL and the PTBNL turned out to be Noles.

Actually, I just checked Baseballreference.com. According to it, the Cubs "loaned" Noles to the Tigers in Sept. 1987, when the Tigers were in the playoff hunt and the Cubs were in last place, and got him back the following month.

hmmm....this is interesting
Cubs did not promote Cedeno but promoted Fox who is playing a utility role, could it be he is replacing Derrick Lee during the suspension period but also with Kendall being full time Cubs could be packaging K Hill.

Does this mean a roster spot remains open?

Likely.....
...there's nothing all that complicated going on here. With Lee out for another four games, the Cubs wanted another player for first base. When Ward is there, it takes away from any possibility he could fill in at right field. So, up comes Fox. To make room for Fox, Izturis was already jettisoned. When Lee's suspension is over, down goes Fox and up comes Cedeno.

I agree with this entirely...
...let's hope Fox can hit a few dingers during this cup o' coffee.

that would be a good move
The next week or so will be interesting. Someone needs to watch Jones and Eyre's apartment and see if movers or cleaners are coming....

that this turns out to be like the '03 Ramirez/Simon  trade ... that ptbl can be very valuable!

Doesn't this mean
that Hendry gave away Maddux for nothing?  Isn't that exactly what he said he didn't want to do last season?

by cubsbak on Jul 19, 2007 12:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Some would say
we were going to lose Maddux anyway, so we took a flier on Izturis and it just didn't work out.

Good point
I actually thought Izturis would be a useful addition.  But I was appalled at how much his game (particularly defensively) had slipped.  Hendry really screwed up with that move.

by cubsbak on Jul 19, 2007 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually no
It's unfortunate but we gave up Maddux for a PTBNL and about 5 months worth of Izturis.  Probably would have been better off with just the PTBNL but that's baseball....

Where is Izzy gonna play for the Bucs?  Did something happen to Jack Wilson?  Do they have an open infield spot for Cesar?

Afaik the Pirates don't have much in the way of prospects and I can't imagine they'd give up any of their best to acquire another good glove no bat shortstop so we probably won't get much back.  Addition by subtraction is what we'll gain though.

Godspeed Izzy, we know you won't come back to haunt us.

Wilson's fallen out of favor with the Bucs.
They're shopping Jack Wilson (and his 5 mil salary), so Izzy is probably a solution til the end of the season for them.

by carmenfanzone on Jul 19, 2007 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well....
How bad do you have to fall out of favor in Pittsburgh to get them to replace you with Cesar Izturis?  Oh well, the Pirates were stupid for paying Wilson like they did.  Check out his stats, one descent year that was a real outlier statistically from anything else he'd ever done.  I think he was on something that year.

In Cesar's words...
' "I just want to play every day and now I get an opportunity to go to Pittsburgh. I don't know the situation over there, but I'm going to miss this team," Izturis said.

"There are a lot of good people around here. Good team, but it's business. ... I have to give credit to the young guys like Theriot and (Mike) Fontenot, they bring energy for the team."

Izturis will be reunited with his former Dodgers manager Jim Tracy, who is now the Pirates' skipper.

"Good, especially with a manager that you played before with him and got your confidence. That's good," Izturis said. '

Pretty Classy....
... mentioning Theriot and Fontenot as he did was a nice thing to do. Here's hoping he regains his form under Tracy.

Cesar added...
..."I particularly look forward to playing behind great hitters like Sanchez and Bay and congratulating them heartily when they return the dugout."

Freddy Sanchez and Jason Bay could not be reacharound for comment.

I'm suprised
Hendry actually got something for Izturis from the Pirates. I thought he was supposed to go to a contending AL team. Oh well, either way it fortells additional moves.
hey, hey, cubs win.

How long
until Izturis gets busted for using amphetamines now?  Man what were the Pirates thinking?  Hendry needs to have Dave Littlefield and Wayne Krivsky on speed dial.  It's pretty obvious neither ones knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

Why?
Izturis is better than their current backup infielders.  The Cubs are evidently sending money with Izturis and the contract is over at the end of the year.  The PTBNL is probably a mediocre prospect at best.  Why shouldn't the Pirates say yes?

It's not the same as Neifi who has another year under contract.

MLB
tradesrumors.com suggests the Cubs might be working to get Nady from the Pirates. That would be a very nice addiiton.

by Peoria Matt on Jul 20, 2007 6:09 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What does he get in return
I enjoy the banter, but I was wondering if anyone has a thought on who you would get in return for Izturis? Double A prospect? Would you even get that? Or, is it conditional to wait and see how valuable he is to the Pirates? I can't imagine why, they aren't going to make the playoffs.
