Anger Management and other thoughts from Shamu-By-The Sea

Michael Barrett is up to his old tricks -- but at least he's not punching out his teammates, but who knows? That's next, perhaps.

The backstop was thrown out of today's Padres/Phillies game, after arguing his called-third strike. Padres manager Bud Black also got the boot, a few moments later.

Some gems from the small town writers at the SD Union-Tribune:

(This cannot be found on line)

From writer Chis Jenkins -- Behind The Seams

"The suspensions served by Chris Young and Derrek Lee proved perfect punishment in a fight where no punches landed. Through clever planning around the All Star Break, Young didn't miss a start. Lee dropped his appeal after fouling a ball off his left ankle Tuesday. Lee said -- "I have to serve it sometime." (Jenkins comment follows:) Yeah, that'll show them.

That's part of the bash-the-big-town-mentality.
But wait, here's more:

From writer Nick Canepa's "...dot-dot-dot..." column: (it's on-line, but worthless reading)

...Mark Cuban wants to buy the Cubs? I thought he hated losing...

Clever stuff, huh? But he had the good sense not to mention the goat.

Some actual reporting was observed in the game story from Saturday night, by the U-T's beat writer, Tom Krasovic: (Phillies over Pads 12-4)

Offensively, the Padres expected to benefit from the recent acquisitions of Bradley and Michael Barrett, plus the return of Brian Giles - and those projections have been mostly on the money.

Bradley, has reached base in more than 40 percent of his plate appearances. Giles reached base three more times last night, giving him an on-base percentage of .476 in 18 games since he returned and assumed the leadoff spot. Barrett has had some big hits, (italics mine) but his .265 on-base percentage wasn't what the Padres envisioned.

By the way, if you have thoughts for two of the three writers, you can find them at:

Ask them why their newspaper's circulation...is -- circling the drain.
