Odd retro jersey

Cubs.com is selling an odd retro jersey:

http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1825794&cp=2776267

Eckersley wasn't on the team in 1978, nor did he ever wear this (ugly) jersey.  He didn't get here until 1984, when they were wearing the blue softball tops.

They also have the same '78 jersey for Santo, Sutter, and Sandberg.  Only Sutter of these three was around at the time.  The rest of the retro jerseys on cubs.com appear to be legit.

So I ask, if you want a retro pajama jersey, why would you get one for a player that wasn't even on the team?  Is it too much to ask for a Buckner or Kingman jersey like that?

Weird.

Not only that...
... but the numbering style doesn't match any numbering style the Cubs have used, at least not in the last fifty years.

I noticed that awhile back
seems strange to me, I guess they figured that people will buy it.

I agree though. If I am going to wear a pajama top jersey I want Sutter or Kingman. A Buckner jersey would be kinda neat too.

I know it's weird.
I have the Buckner version of that jersey--it's the 1978 road jersey. I don't think it's ugly. It rules, especially over the Cubs current boring grey away unis. Also, the jersey of that year didn't have names on the back--they were number-only. That's why a friend asked me about my "Prior jersey", since Buckner and Mark shared a common numeral. :)

They think we'll buy anything
'Replica' isn't even the proper word to describe this monstrosity, because as Al states, the wrong font is used for the #, no name was ever placed on the back of the uniform -- and those pinstripes were never that 'big,' as illustrated.

Besides, 'Chicago' is kind of 'scrunched' together, (there ws much more seperation between the letters) and for at least 1 season -- the player's # was underneath the middle of "Chicago," not off to the left side, as it was earlier, and is now.

I always thought this road uni was unique, and I've always liked it -- but this is horrible for  the price. What a mess.

There are so many mistakes with retro jerseys in all sports, you have to be careful. Locally, an example in the NFL -- you can buy a #80 Kellen Winslow (Sr, not Jr) Powder Blue Throwback jersey for some ungodly sum -- but Winslow never wore that color with the Chargers. They had discontinued that classic uniform by the time he joined the team.

For the record...
I own a authentic 79 jersey.  It is George Rileys 79 jersey (with the number change for spring training 1980).  Here is what an authentic 79 road jersey looks like

No name?
I remember names on those jerseys. Are there stitch holes above the number? The name might have been removed for use as a minor league shirt before you bought it.

No stitch marks...
the only thing above the number is the stitches from the tag on the inside (set #, size, ect.)  I don't think the names went on the road jerseys until the 1980 season.

I take back what I just said...
I looked up some old baseball cards and the Jerseys DID have names back in 79.  Mine doesn't show any marks, but I do know that the practice was to use these jerseys in the minors, so I am sure the name was removed for that.

Not so fast
I love it.  I'm not a jersey guy, and that is the only Cubs jersey that I've ever thought of buying to wear.  I think that the cut and the color make it the only one that doesn't look absurd for an adult to wear with blue jeans

That Eckersley Jersey
is a complete rip-off.  The guy wasn't here in '78 and the Cubs NEVER wore that font for numbers in my lifetime.  What a scam.
One day, the dream will come true.

1984 Ryne Sandberg Jersey Question
So I open my anniversary gift and at first glance I jump out of my seat in excitement. It's a Cubs Jersey. I hug her and kiss her and say thanks. I take it out of the box and hold it up and its similar to this one . That is, until I look at the back and it's blank. So I try to disguise my sudden return to earth. It's still nice and I'm thankful, dont get me wrong. I just dont feel comfortable wearing it like this, it feels like a womans shirt.

I need your help if you can 1.) advise of anywhere where I can find near Chicagoland the patches (Numbers/Letters) and where to get them sewn on... and 2.) what font would you say this looks like?

Any other ideas, input, comments would be most appreciated. Thanks!
