Apologies for no wrap yesterday.
Some back problems are going to keep this wrap shorter than normal.
Had the day off. Yesterday we missed Felix Pie's Grand Slam for Iowa.
Shortstop Joe Simokaitis' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth led the Smokies to a 8-7 victory over the Carolina Mudcats
Donnie Veal started the game and lasted only four innings while surrendering five runs. But the weird thing was all five runs were unearned--the result of two errors in the third inning. (One of the errors was Veal's though.) He gave up only three hits and walked no one while striking out seven. So really good peripherals.
Rocky Roquet got the win with two shutout innings of relief.
Third baseman Casey McGehee went 3 for 5 with a home run. First baseman Matt Craig went 3 for 4 with a homer.
The Daytona Cubs to the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-2.
Brian Dopirak, Jeffrey Rea and Steve Clevinger all went 2 for 4. Matt Camp went 2 for 5 and stole his first base at High-A (along with his first caught stealing).
Daytona made four errors.
The Chiefs also lost to the Fort Wayne Wizards by an identical 6-2 score.
Starter Marco Carillo gave up five runs in six innings. He gave up six hits, but the good news was that he struck out eight and walked no one.
The Chiefs only managed four hits. Henry Blanco had a double in two at bats.
The Hawks delivered a thumping to the Spokane Indians, 15-4
There were a lot of big offensive nights tonight. Shortstop Dylan Johnston went 5 for 5 with a walk, two doubles, a stolen base, two RBI and four runs scored. Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt (a new favorite of mine) went 3 for 7 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Left fielder Ty Wright went 0 for 1, but walked five times. He must not understand he plays for the Cubs. Right fielder Kyler Burke went 2 for 6.
