ARod for Cedeno/Fox deal is very close

at least in my EA MVP Baseball game.

Not trying to be a jerk, but this diary is mainly a question about how to respond to rumor posts.

I'm not discounting or supporting any post. The truth of those are irrelevant to the following questions.

When seeing a rumor posted in a forum like this it seems the general consensus is to automatically give it enough merit to talk about the pros and cons of such a trade. True or not, it seems to promote good discussion as to whether or not such a deal would be "worthy." Whether or not it's a "valid rumor" (rather oxymoronic) seems to be of less importance.

Do we tend to just like these kinds of rumors? Giving them more leeway than other types of posts just because we like to debate the theoretical issues?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Darn
I thought you were serious!

Maybe if they don't want Cedeno for A-Rod, they'd take Murton for him.

Oh man...
you can't do that to a guy.  I about had a heart attack at the young age of 24.

That's kinda the point of the post
It's the time of the year. We look all over the Internet for this kind of stuff and when we see something even semi-plausibile or as odd as what I posted our heart skips a beat.

The Dunn post, while potentially valid, garners so much attention because it satiates our needs for some news... any news.

you said you arnt trying to be a jerk?
but posting this diary was the jerk thing 2 do. Couldnt you have just wrote in the diary that was created about dunn?

by Kchance on Jul 24, 2007 2:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
as did "jazzypete" in that diary.

by TC Cubby on Jul 24, 2007 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not the point of the diary
I still may be a jerk, but the question posed was more to why we want to believe and separate that from anything complimentary or accusatory against the Dunn post.

The last post...
like the Dunn diary that I saw here was the day we traded for Rob Bowen. The poster knew someone, and got the scoop at least a few hours ahead of MSM. Let's try and cut the guy a break.

Excellent point...
i knew there was a previous diary about a player we just got but i could not think of it.

Again, this isn't a post against PA
It's a question about why... not who.

That was me
and I didnt post it as a rumor.  I work with Rob Bowens uncle and was there when he got the call from Rob himself.  Dont know if that changes the context of the diary, but there is a difference between posting what you here on a radio station or read on the internet and when you get it straight from the horses mouth, sort of speak.
2007 is the year, I can feel it in my bones.

Dunn
I understand the skepticism from people, I have visited some Cubs message boards before where false rumors were posted so it's natural for people to figure that it is made up. I'm just passing along what I hear and I'm praying the deal gets done, because it would seriously bolster this lineup and make the Cubs the definite favorite in the Central from here on out, IMO.

I don't believe this.
I'm almost positive that Jake Fox wasn't in MVP Baseball the last year it was made. Geez, some people are willing to fabricate anything.

i was thinking the same thing. and come to think of it, i dont even think cedeno was in the game the last year it was made as well. its a shame to, what a great game that was.

i agree
id pay $100 for that game. the only time i got to play GM and get guys like carl crawford (whom i have always dreamed of being a cub) was in that game. and then winning the world series was the cherry on the top. its a nice escape from reality and i spend countless hundreds of hours playing that game a few summers ago.

by bennyha on Jul 24, 2007 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreeing with you on all counts
Crawford is a stud, no question about it.  If he was on a big market team, there's not a doubt in my mind that he would be a superstar.  And, yes, I spent many an hour with that game as well.  Still play it every once in a while because it's just so damn good.

Well then
What 'unnamed' family member?

What was the 'charity dinner' for and where was it?

You made this whole thing up, PA -- for attention.
And, unfortunately, you are getting it.

I think you are trying to see if the MSM picks this up -- as that Milwaukee radio station did -- what, 2 weeks ago -- about a trade that the "Brewers were about to make" -- and didn't it involve the Reds?

Didn't the station have to apologize for wrong info?

Is this Trade-scam part 2?

He doesn't owe you a thing
Feel free to express your skepticism, but there's no need to be an ass.

For the record, I'm not buying his story, but not because he's given me any reason to think he's lying.  He said a friend of his was talking to an unnamed family member of Dunn.  It's certainly possible that that person said that and that they are wrong, but that doesn't make PA a liar.

by Porfi on Jul 24, 2007 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

h
Well, let's see:
  1. My friend did not tell me exactly which family member it was. I plan on calling him later and getting more details on these things.
  2. Also don't know much more about the charity dinner, other than it was in Texas, where Dunn and his family are from. Again, I will contact him at some point to find these things out.
I'm not sure how you can just say "I'm making this up", I'm simply passing along info I have come across, not doing it for "attention" or anything.

I'm sorry if this post seemed to be a slight
It wasn't intended to be one at all and I'm not really sure why folks aren't looking at the core questions I'm asking...

To help folks see what the heck I was asking, I'll edit the post and remove any reference to you.

It's a rumor...take it for what it's worth.
Last year, Al told us that A-Rod was coming to the Cubs. It never happened. This guy says he has a source that says Dunn is coming to the Cubs. Great. It's a blog that is here so people can discuss this very type of thing. If it's true, great. If not, no harm. At least it got us talking...I don't think there's a reason to attack his post...

by bergs55 on Jul 24, 2007 3:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You are misrepresenting...
... what I said about A-Rod. I never said he was coming to the Cubs. I said there was a rumor floating around about inquiries that had been made. This was corroborated by an independent source.

Inquiries were made. Nothing happened. But I never said he was coming here. Here is the post I made on this topic last July 2.

If this person has actually spoken to someone who's heard this directly from Dunn, that's at least worth discussing.

That's what I meant...
It just came out wrong. Sorry!

by bergs55 on Jul 24, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then
that is completely different than here, where this anonymous person posted a made up rumor. Rumors can/should be posted, and whether the deal gets conusmated doesn't make them any less legitimate. If someone hears from a real source that GMs are discussing something, I'd be rapt with interest. But I have no interest in reading about a made up rumor from an anonymous source. I gather you wouldn't want to offend him in the tiny chance that he is posting legit info, but I would bet you find this thing to be awfully fishy.

by jazzypete on Jul 24, 2007 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno.
He did say it was "a possibility", not that it was a ... "Dunn deal".

Sorry.

Anyway, I'm skeptical too, but who knows? Maybe it has legs. We'll see.

stelmodad:
I thoroughly enjoyed this diary.  Has a nice emotional punch to it.

It reminds me of what some artist said about how he doesn't intend to just create something beautiful.  Rather he wanted to create something that evoked a strong emotional reaction.

I think
the guy made up the Dunn thing, but you probably could've made your point there. That's just my opinion though.

I hear you, but I wasn't trying to make any point
I just really do want to know what you all think about rumor posts.

Do we need them to be true? Do we need them to exist? Do we start with cynicism and then go from there or start with belief and wait till we hear otherwise?

In a Kansas paper...
About a week ago, a man came forward after being offered in the neighborhood of 100,000-200,000 dollars to visit and post at all the Texas A&M basketball blogs, supposedly in an attempt to sway the fan base and leak information as deemed by Mark Turgeon himself. The man said Turgeon was unaware of the offer, which came from University officials.

All I'm saying is that there are sources who leak things out on purpose and sources that get kicks from spreading rumors. It's just how blogs work. Not condemning PA, but it's out there.

MARQUIS! YES, MARQUIS!
