Places to stay in Wrigleyville?

My wife and I plan to be in Chicago to see the Cubs August 17 - 21.  Usually we stay with friends, but we thought it might be better to get a room at an interesting inn or funky hotel near the ball park.

Does anyone have any recommendations?  Also, we are looking for bleacher tickets for the Aug 17 game if anyone has some they need to sell.

Thanks.

Try this place...
... the Hawthorne Terrace. It's four blocks walk from the ballpark, rates are reasonable; I have known people who stayed there and said it was quite nice.

We've stayed..
at the Ambassador East. Close to the ballpark and Michigan avenue. I wouldn't call it particularly interesting or funky however.
Well, sometimes nothin is a real cool hand.

oh oh oh oh ........
....you must not know much above the Ambassador East my friend. It's a very interesting place with much history.

Call me a hayseed..
but I did know of the history of the place. I guess it was lost on me. I probably might have been more impressed had I read more about it.

Ambassador East
The Ambassador East was home of the Pump Room.  That's interesting enough for a book or two alone.  The rooms are old and funky, and I loved their Thanksgiving buffet.  Another place I miss very much!

Absolutely
I stayed there August of 2004 and will be there again this coming October. I made sure to drink and get drunk in the Pump Room until 2:00 a.m. just to be able to say I did so.

I did some work computer work for them
a few years back. They told me that the song by Phil Collins no jacket required came from the pump room. It was one of those places that requires a suit jacket and keeps a couple spares for the patron who don't have a coat. I guess Phil needed to wear one of those coats and came up with the song.

Ambassador East is a great location only a block away from Division and the strip of bars and only a block  or two away from the oak street beach and a quick cab ride to the ball park.

A good day for me is a cubs win and a sox loss.

B&B
There is a Bed and Breakfast in Wicker Park I believe, funky and interesting probably, but not super close to the park.

At Diversey/Clark
2 Hotels:

Days Inn
Inn @ Lincoln Park.

Inn @ Lincoln Park, that's funky. Some people may not like it. Prices are OK -- I've stayed there 2 years running. 25 min walk to Wrigley.

Mixed reviews on tripadvisor.com....some really hate the place, but if you spend most of your time out of your hotel, I think it's great.

It's 3 blocks from Lincoln Park. I love that -- I go running and walking to Diversey Harbor and points south.

Good Continental Breakfast. But the place is old, so it's funky. Figure in parking, if you have a car -- 10 to 12 bucks a day, about the same at Days Inn.

It's also in walking distance, and I've stayed there, old but in pretty good shape.

I second that
The Majestic is great. Walking distance to the park, cozy bed and breakfast feel, good rates.

My buddy Joel's place
4 blocks from Wrigley. Always beer in the fridge. Clean bathrooms with lots of fresh towels. Pool table and big screen tv in the basement. Two car garage to stash my car for night games. Couldn't be a better set up for me.

would he swap time
...with my brother in law's place in New Orleans during Jazzfest?  Good times are guaranteed for all.  Les is a horse's ass but can mix a wide smorgesboard of killer drinks...but didn't enjoy the last NFC playoffs.  Can be discussed...

Hotwire
watch rates and book a few days out. You can get great downtown hotels for under $100.

Hawthorne and such
My brother and I went to our first Wrigley Cubs game 3 years ago...stayed at the Hawthorne. Didn't spend a lot of time at the hotel, but the location was great - parking not too far away, short walk to Wrigley and the train. Rooms were clean and comfortable with some old school charm.

On another note, I'll be in Chicago next weekend and as a lifelong Cubs fan, I am absolutely compelled to see this team play. I don't have tickets - what's the situation like before the game? If I get down there 4 hours or so before the Saturday game (2:55 start), will I be able to get a ticket? Do they reserve anything (bleachers or upper deck sections) for walk up sales or is my only option a scalper?

by montanacubby on Jul 26, 2007 9:57 AM CDT reply actions

About tickets...
... they will be hard to come by for this Saturday, but there are two things you can try:
  • Check the Cubs website on Friday afternoon. Sometimes they drop a few tickets for sale if employees/players don't claim them.
  • Go to the box office at 9 am Saturday when it opens. Sometimes they have a few available.
Good luck!

I stayed
at the City Suites on Belmont and Sheffield a few years ago. It was decent and just a 15 minute walk to the park. If you are looking for funky, that neighborhood definitely fits the bill after dark. It is pretty normal during the daytime. The el station is also right next door and they had their own parking lot at that time down one of the side streets. When I come to town anymore, I stay downtown and take the el to the game. Much more to do down there, I like to stay in the river north area.
