Iguchi to the phillies

The White Sox traded Tadahito Iguchi to the phillies according to http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/07/phillies-acquir.html
I think this is going to help the cubs eventually with the Phillies losing some prospects, and there current season probably over. Now it looks like the White Sox might reach or get close to 100 losses.

Huh?
How does this help the Cubs? I don't get the reasoning on that one, especially if all the Phils gave up is a Low-A baller.

It does suggest
that the market isn't nearly as rich as some thought.   The Phillies, who are in contention and had a serious need, could have been held up.  They weren't.   That speaks volumes.

But the bad news is...
... that Iguchi, who has hit .345/.443/.569 against the Cubs in 58 career AB, will be at Wrigley Field on Monday for a 4-game series.

Give credit to the Phillies, who just lost Chase Utley for 4-6 weeks, for getting a decent replacement, and not giving up much to get him.

isn't Utley out for weeks from a beaning?
Taguchi will fill the spot but Utley was one of the league's leaders offensively.

Phils are competing but have to make up ground on Cubs/Atl/SD/LAD/AZ to compete for WC

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

I don't
get how it helps the Cubs either. Please explain.
hey, hey, cubs win.

Or..
...how does this make the White Sox any closer to losing 100 games. He was a solid player, but was having a down year and not making much of an impact. Judging by what the Sox got for him, he couldn't have been that important to the team. I don't see them being much worse than they already are.

Sox
have a love fest going on with the Phils. Hopefully, this signals a fire sale on the south side.

Inconsequential for Sox
...a so-so player in his walk year traded for very little; good move for Philly tho.

Taguchi was a major contributor to the Sox WS in
'05 but had slowed down quite a bit since esp. this year...not sure of Sox options but Fontenot or E=Patt for Cubs (for Dye) might not be bad ones...checking out Sox board see what they say wonder if they care?

Does show a soft market for middle-infield replacements...no one picking up Neiffi??

Neifi's still serving his suspension.

Pure salary dump
It's a straight rental - the Phillies appear to have agreed to pick up Iguchi's salary the rest of the way.  There's no particular reason why Kenny Williams wouldn't bring Iguchi back next season if the price point was right - he did that with Crazy Carl Everett.

But this trade was so obvious, the minute I heard 4 weeks, I said "Iguchi" out loud to nobody in particular as I was alone at home.

The Mets needed a 2B as well, but they had such a bad experience with Kaz Matsui (sp?) that they were not going to bring in another Japanese MI.  I think they'll end up with Mark Loretta by Tuesday.

doobie
This trade is certainly reasonable for the Sox.
  • It clears a spot for a Dan Richar, a prospect they're eager to see play everyday against ML competition.
  • If the Sox held on to Iguchi and he then left via FA the Sox would have got ZERO compensation.
  • If they are not satisfied with Richar, they can always resign Iguchi, who left with his World Series ring and positive comments about the Sox.
  • Rich Dubee, while not a high prospect, is a prospect at this point early in his career.
Something for Iguchi is better than nothing.  Perhaps someday the Sox will have both Danks and Dubee pitching together.
