Open Thread: Cubs vs. Nationals, Thursday 7/5, 6:05 CT

I'm going to the Police concert tonight at Wrigley Field, so I won't see much, if any, of the series finale at Washington. Also, that means tomorrow morning's recap will be more concert review than ballgame recap. I didn't go to the Jimmy Buffett shows at Wrigley Field two years ago, so I'm very curious to see how they transform the ballpark into a concert venue.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Jason Bergmann
 J. Bergmann
Nationals
4-3 W-L 1-5
3.50 ERA 3.47
36 SO 47
13 BB 23
6 HR 5
vs. Was -- vs. Cubs
Sean Marshall is coming off his worst start of the year, and it'd be nice for him (not to mention the team) if he could have a solid comeback tonight, as he won't throw again till after the All-Star break. He beat the Nats on May 17, 2006, giving them only one hit in six innings, one of the best outings he had last year.

Jason Bergmann has been the victim of poor run support; in his ten starts the Nats have scored a total of 23 runs. He also spent a month on the DL; he's faced the Cubs once, which was the game on May 4 where Carlos Zambrano gave the Nats four runs in the first inning, and the Cubs came back to win anyway. Bergmann has started twice since his return from the DL and gone only four innings in each one.

For those of you who CAN watch today's game, it's cable-only, thus also at the Mediacenter.

We were talking last night wondering how they're going to protect the field; I'm stoked to be standing in LF tomorrow tho!! Enjoy the show, I'm looking forward to revisiting my youth :).

For the Buffet...
concert, what they did was barricade off the grass in the infield so that people could not walk on the mound or the grass around it. Then they put the stage in front of the scoreboard in CF, with chairs in LF, CF, and RF. So no seats in the bleachers and the stands were packed. That was a great show.

by ChiSportsBob on Jul 5, 2007 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

that set up
makes sense, the view shouldnt be too bad out to center field and this keeps most of the rooftops from getting a good view. It would be nice if they set up a couple big screens in left and right just for the concert.

Only 5 games back!!
Milw loses again to Pitt...good!! Cubs have golden opportunity here, we've been hoping to get within "striking distance'' and I'd say 5-6 games is, but 4.5 even better with 80 to play!!

Are Brewers headed into another tailspin? They bounced back OK from horrible loss to Cubs last Friday at Wrigley, but have been spinning wheels a bit since...to think they're "only'' 11 games over .500 now, what was their high-water mark?

I see them finishing below 10 games over, for some reason...just not that polished.

by writerinwrigley on Jul 5, 2007 4:39 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed.
It's also nice to see the ace of the staff Sheets give up 5 runs in 6 innings.

And Jones in CF??
Miracle of miracles, somehow I like this lineup (at least against Wash).

the starting pitching will dictate a lot, as always...just didn't get good feel from Hill yesterday, and haven't from marshall much lately either...those 2 young lefties in rotation worry me, wonder if our biggest need isn't a more established (pref. RH) starter for stretch run...hasn't been much talk of acquiring a pitcher, but couldn't hurt.

As saw yesterday and always the case, any game, any major league team can beat another, but Cubs sked is sure favorable here and in next few wks.

Petrick down, Gallagher up
I don't recall this kind of roster juggling, back and forth shuttle with pitchers before...guess it's "legal'' as long as don't exhaust options on players...I'm not clear on option rules, how many options left now on Petrick? Do the rules just apply per season or over life of a career?

Cuz I really like Petrick's stuff but doesn't seem they can find a perm spot for him...or are they just sending "down'' after he's worked and need a fresh arm for the short term?

by sanantonecub on Jul 5, 2007 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
If you haven't managed a game you can't comment on lineups. That makes sense. The fact is, the Nats pitcher has a career BAA of .250 for lefties and .245 for righties. So Lou is sacrificing guys who have been playing greate, like DeRosa and Theriot, to get the AWESOME left-handed bats of Jacque Jones and Cesar Izturis in the lineup. Resting DLee for the lefty Ward when he has a five game suspension upcoming in addition to the all-star break has to qualify as the most moronic managerial move of the year, unless we learn pretty quickly that DLee has dropped his suspension.

by paulucla on Jul 5, 2007 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Re: Yeah
Unless of course, Izzie and Jones are in the lineup because a possible suitor has asked for them to get some more at bats because they will have a scout in the stands.

Or maybe DeRosa and Theriot just aren't feeling that great today and have a 24 hour flu.  Or maybe a thousand different reasons.

Lou is in the clubhouse and knows what goes on, we don't.  We can only take what we see on TV and yell and b**ch about it without knowing the facts.

but this lineup tonight just seems stupid. after our floyd we have very little chance of anything good happening. after a brewers loss we need to win games like this. to me this just says we're happy to go 2-2 in this series. why does somebody need a break 3 days before the all-star game?? and we played a day game yesterday and now a night game so they have had a little extra left. it just screams surrender to me. hopefully lou makes me look like an idiot and we score 5 or 6 but im not holding my breath.

wtf
why would he go back to philly, victorino is playing great, and bourn will take over in center for rowand, along with burrell and dobbs in left

and the pads never spend money on anyone

those are probably the two least likely teams to get him, the most likely would be the cardinals, white sox, or mets

by BuckyisaCubbiesFan on Jul 5, 2007 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

well
rowand may be trade bait, but you're right that philly is unlikely. the cardinals don't take on big contracts as a rule, nor do the white sox, plus, i believe abreu is a boras guy, so that doubly rules out the white sox, so that leaves the met and SD. out fo those two, both need a RF, but only SD has the pitching to get abreu from yankees, plus, they won't trade him across town, so i think towers makes an exception and gets him, maybe for linebrink and a prospect

Can Of Corn
According to Paul Dickson, "can of corn" was first used back in 1896 to describe a fly ball hit so high that the fielder has time to stand directly under the falling ball. The standard theory traces the term to old-fashioned grocery stores, where canned goods were stored on high shelves and pulled down with a long pole. An experienced store clerk would have no trouble catching the tumbling can, thus the term.

it sure does
these last 2 games have been disappointing to say the least. its one thing to lose a game, but the way you lose games is another thing. they laid down and didnt compete yesterday and today we just dont execute when we have runner on second no outs, etc etc. looks like we are afraid to cut the brewers lead under 5 and venture too far above .500

its just that this is the nationals and we have to win these kind of series. yeah splitting the series 2-2 isnt bad, but against these caliber teams we need to win these series and maintain momentum going into the break. this is probably the worst team in baseball and we need to gain ground and put more pressure on the brewers by winning when they lose. we have to stay above .500 keep positive energy going

by bennyha on Jul 5, 2007 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh...
they're playing mediocre ball right now.  5-5 in their last 10.

they'll only be around if we (or the Brewers) let them, because that rotation is still really bad.

by SouthernCub on Jul 5, 2007 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

true
their rotation blows. but getting carpenter back will be a big boost to them. i agree their is no way in hell they should be within a few games of us with that rotation, let alone the brewers, but for some reason they always find themselves in the division race almost every year even when they have some pretty mediocre teams

by bennyha on Jul 5, 2007 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

that rotation is rough
but if they make a move, say for buerhle, or one of the guys from baltimore, it could change in a hurry. i never count out larussa...although i loathe him with ever fiber of my being.

Trades...
and a surprisingly strong comeback for Carpenter could make them an interesting candidate.  But even with Carpenter and Buehrle, I like the Cubs team better this year.

Of course anything can happen.  But unlike in previous years (in which they've had great pitching and comparable talent), I don't think they've got the horses this year.  I'll be really surprised if they pull it off.

i think none
they dont face tonights starter or yesterday's, two of their aveage pitchers in this bad rotation. i think the brewers will sweep them. we just need to take 2 out of 3 from a pirates team playing really well to maintain pace and stay within the 5 or 6 games back range at the break. i would be really happy if the nats could get one game from them

the cardinals won as well
they're only 7.5 back. they were quite fortunate, as the diamondbacks had the tying run at third twice with less than two outs in the late innings and failed to execute (not to mention the tying run would have scored in the ninth if not for the ball bouncing over the wall on a ground rule double). in any case, things are getting interesting in the central.

by buckmulligan on Jul 5, 2007 9:08 PM CDT reply actions

I'm somewhat
worried about the Cardinals. They're gonna be getting Carpenter back soon, and I think that they're in good position for a second half run. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

ALl I can say is, this performance better not have sold (or better yet, duped) Lou into playing him regularly.  We are winning and it is not a coincidence that it started when JJ was benched (one of the things done of course).

Just say no to JJ...nice guy, but doesn't win games.

Cubs win!
I sure wish that some people could wait for the game to be played before they trash the lineup and start the nigh off ripping Cub players.  I've reading this page for a long time because it wan't as negative as many others.  Sorry, but it is getting really hard to read.  The whole idea is to win games.  We have been on fire since Barrett gave way to our weak hitting catchers but we keep winning.  A catcher's most important thing is to work with the pitching staff.  These guys are doing a great job.  This isn't fantasy baseball.  A lot of great teams have had defensive minded players who don't hit a lick but still do the little things.  Remember it is all about winning!

by Walt on Jul 5, 2007 10:31 PM CDT reply actions

I agree, but
don't you think the Cubs might want to at least take a look at Geovany Soto? He is, by all accounts, a much better hitter than either Bowen or Hill, but also he's supposed to be pretty decent when it comes to defense as well.

by sackings108 on Jul 5, 2007 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, but
The things I remember reading about Soto's defense said that he was very stiff as a receiver.  Guys with great offensive stats have been left in AAA since the beginning of time.  The unnoticed things that catchers do often are never noticed by fans.  It's just the way they handle pitchers.  They have an innate ability to get the best out of the pitcher.  Lou loves those types of guys.  Gotta think that if Soto was such a stud he would have had a real chance by now.  I think it is better to leave those decisions up to the guys paid to do make them.  I want to win on the field not in a fantasy game where stats matter.  Nothing matters except the score at the end of the game.

Guys like Ward are professional hitters.  There were way to many negative comments abouthim beingin the lineup tonight.  Has anyone watched Lee lately.  He is really struggling so what is wrong with giving Ward the start.  Same goes for Izzy from the standpoint that he has to get some at bats sometime or he won't be worth a darn when you do need him.  You don't need a fantasy lineup up and down the order to win a baseball game.  It takes the little things.  Sometimes the lesser players are more willing to do those things than the stars.

Well said about catchers
and this is something the vast majority of fans don't appreciate, or understand.

Quick POLICE Review...
FWIW, The Police REALLY brought it big time at Wrigley!!!

As a former professional drummer/producer who has toured and recorded extensively for over 20 years, I was somewhat skeptical with what the re-formed group would do...

Our seats were on the field and actually, we were somewhat in right field - very, very cool experience - walked around the show and checked out the dugouts. It really is a disadvantage for the managers not to be able to see the field of play b/c they are 4 feet below the turf!

The sound, energy, and multimedia backdrops were absolutely terrific and they did quite a large and expansive amount of material in the two hour show. I believe their musicianship has improved as they have all had myriad musical experiences since the band broke up. Truly a treat...

When Sting mentioned the last time they played Chicago was 24 years ago at Comisky, the majority of the fnas BOOED! Sting didn't get the inside joke and thought the booing was due to the time lapse.

As a huge Stewart Copeland fan, he comes out for the encore in a Cubs jersey, with his name on the back - oh well - he probably likes the Dodgers...

Anyway, if any you are REALLY interested, I'm sure you can find a ticket for tomorrow's show.

Anyone who has pics of Copeland with the Cubs jersey, let me know and I'll come up with some fair $$ or a ticket to a game...

Is it too early to be out of it, or too early to be this far behind?

Police symetry, catch it?
As mentioned above, the Police played at Wrigley on Thursday night.  The last Police concert in Chicago was at the glorious old Comiskey Park on July 23, 1983.

While The Police were jamming at old Comiskey (I was there and I don't remember The Police being booed) the Sox were playing the Brewers in Milwaukee.  The Sox lost that night to the Brewers but won the AL West Division title handily with 99 wins.  They finished with a 20 game lead.  However on July 23 the Sox had a mere one game lead on Texas.

Will a Police concert in Chicago at Wrigley foreshadow Cubbie NL Central title?

July 5, 1983...
On July 5, 1983 the Sox were 3.5 games out of first and in 3rd place.
