The least the Pirates could have done tonight is adjust the starting time of the game by two minutes... then it would have been at 7:07 (EDT) on 7/7/07.
Oh, well. Maybe not doing that will bring the CUBS some luck.
| Today's Starting Pitchers
If the pitcher box looks a little odd today, it's because of the length of John Van Benschoten's name (fourteen characters including the space). The name translates from Dutch as "John Of Being Shot". Perhaps the Cubs can "shoot" some home runs off him; the last Cub HR was Aramis Ramirez' walkoff on June 29, eight games ago. Part of that was playing four games in RFK Stadium, a non-HR-friendly place (it currently has a HR park factor of .64, second-lowest in baseball, and there were only two HR in the entire four-game series, by Ryan Zimmerman and Dmitri Young of the Nats), and part of it is that despite the supposed presence of RH-hitting power on the Cubs, they're really not a HR-hitting team (though they do hit for power -- third in the NL in doubles with 175).
The Cubs have never faced Mr. Of Being Shot.
Ted Lilly hasn't had much good luck vs. the Pirates in his career -- career 5.52 ERA in four games, two starts, both of those starts this year, both no-decisions. Oddly, the Cubs won the game in which he pitched poorly and lost the game in which he threw well. Go figure.
Today's game is on WGN; for those who don't get WGN, it will be on EI and also at the Mediacenter.
