Brood Crude Poll

Wrigley Field North references do not play well in Cheeseheadland.  The SB Nation site for our Northerly Neighbors is usually a place that I enjoy  perusing, if only to check on the current milk and cheese futures.  Tonight I found a rather disturbed "poll" posted there, that BCB readers might want to take note of, if only to remind Brew Crew Ball fans that BCB stands for Bleed Cubbie Blue!

Below is the "poll" that was posted (any guess which team's fans were notably missing?):

Star-divide

What NL Central rival has the most passionate and knowledgeable fans?
St. Louis Cardinals       113 votes - 79 %
Pittsburgh Pirates       14 votes - 9 %
Cincinnati Reds       6 votes - 4 %
Houston Astros       10 votes - 6 %

143 Total Votes

I can only speculate as to why their "poll" dissed the Cubs - perhaps fear that true BCB fans would overwhelm and skew their numbers, or maybe they just can't handle the truth!

Poll
What NL Central rival has the most passionate and knowledgeable fans?
2. Houston Astros

3. Milwaukee Braves
8 votes
4. Pittsburgh Pirates

5. St. Louis Cardinals

1. Cincinnati Reds

That's funny.
I graduated from UW-Madison two years ago and made about a dozen trips to Miller Park.  I can tell you a few things, most of which we already know:

--Die hard Brewers fans are very bitter and jealous of we fans

--Brewers LOVE it when the Cubs come to town: It's the only time they sell out!  This is why most all Brewers/Cubs games are on WEEKDAYS, right?

--Miller Park is a fantastic and incredible ballpark, very family friendly

--The "SPECIAL SAUCE" is truly special

--Funny short story: Right outside of Miller, there is a statue of Robin Yount.  After renting a short bus, with a keg of beer to drink on the way, our group walks up to the statue (mainly Cubs fans) and in the midst of thousands of Brewers fans walking into the stadium, one in our group screams, "WHO'S ROBIN YOU-NT?"  Stressing the incorrect pronunciation, 15-20 Brewers fans turn around in disgust.  Needless to say, the expressions we received were priceless.  Ah, college.

--I think the other day the Brewers starting lineup included 7/9 home grown players.  I honestly wish our team could say that.  I have no negative animosity towards this club; their young core is something to be desired by any major league team.

--Even so, Selig still favorites em.

Whaaa?
As a Brewer fan, and partial instigator of the BCB wars, I thought I would stop by to see what was shaking.

* Die hard Brewers fans are very bitter and jealous of we fans.

Welllll, I don't know if that's necessarily true, though it will play well with the crowd here, of course.  Why would we be bitter about Cubs fans?  Who really thinks about a rival team's fans in the first place?  I will say this, though: having so many Cubs fans at Miller Park is a source of local shame, especially in the past 4-5 years or so, when our team was particularly not good.  Now that both teams are playing well and Miller Park is selling out more, it's kind of fun.

I think it was stated somewhere else around here: fans really aren't that different wherever you go.  Some Cubs fans are very knowledgeable, and some are on board for the ride.  Same with the Brewers, or any other team you can name.  It might be a little different with the Cubs, though: because the Cubs have such a long history, I think there's a certain cachet for wearing a Cubs baseball cap that you don't get with the Brewers.

* Brewers LOVE it when the Cubs come to town: It's the only time they sell out!  This is why most all Brewers/Cubs games are on WEEKDAYS, right?

What, you think we control the scheduling?  Personally, I don't get why our teams played each other so early in the season, when kids are still in school and it's still cold and rainy.  The Cubs and Twins are our favorite rivals, with the Cards probably coming in third.  They really should be played no sooner than May.  And that's true, the Cubs games used to be our sellouts, though that's not the case this year.

* Miller Park is a fantastic and incredible ballpark, very family friendly

That's true, it's pretty cool.  And there aren't bad seats.

* The "SPECIAL SAUCE" is truly special

I would never eat anything that has a "special sauce" on it, because that sounds a little creepy.  But people seem to like it.

  • OK, that's a pretty funny story about Robin Yount.
  • I think the other day the Brewers starting lineup included 7/9 home grown players.  I honestly wish our team could say that.  I have no negative animosity towards this club; their young core is something to be desired by any major league team.
You'd think all those years of high draft picks would have paid off sooner, wouldn't you?  Shows what poor scouting will get you.  I doubt we'll ever have half of your payroll, so this is the only way the Brewers can succeed.

Plus we have a lousy TV contract.

It'll be interesting to watch in 3 years or so, when our young team starts to hit arbitration and then free agency.

* Even so, Selig still favorites em.

People around are pretty split on Bud Selig.  He's like Hilary Clinton: he's either loved or hated, and very few people have a lukewarm reaction toward him. He did bring baseball back to Milwaukee, and we'd be much worse off without it.  Otherwise, we'd all be Bucks fans.

Maybe they just figured....
that Cubs fans are a given as being #1, so they were just discussing the rest of the teams in the division.  It should have just been worded, "Other than the Cubs, which NL Central rival has the most knowledgeable and passionate fans."

The problem I HAVE with Cubs fans...
...is that I really only see two kinds: (1) Those on BCB and the like; die-hards, never seen a championship but still buy the gear, sit through the grief, and still believe in next year; and (2) The Cubs "fans" that wear the hat or go to the game because it is trendy and cool and hip.  The former are amongst the best of fans in all of sports; the latter, unfortunately, give us a bad rep...and I saw a lot more of em in 2003.

Dan

PS - I think the Cards have the strongest and most loyal fan base, there, I said it.

Cuts both ways
It seems that every person I see wearing Cards gear around here is wearing it because they went to a game once and it's (relatively) clean.  When I ask them a question about their pitching or the NL Central race they stare at me blankly like I just asked them if they have indoor plumbing.

As a prank, I replaced the desktop of one of my "Cardinals fan" co-workers with Tony LaRussa's mug shot back when he got pinched for DUI.  Not only did he not know about Tony's pretty widely reported legal problems, but he didn't even know who he was looking at when he turned on his computer!  Kinda ruined the fun for me at that point.

I'm sure there are wonderfully informed Cardinals fans somewhere on this planet - they are CONSTANTLY mentioned as having a knowledgeable fan-base and the crowd at the games seem to be able to follow the action pretty well.  The diversity of the fan base is one of the great things about baseball.

Those fans
have always bothered me as well but I find that the most annoying Cub fans are th eones who choose to satnd directly behind me and my dad in the bleachers and smoke cigarettes.  They talk very loudly (and rarely about the game) and can be quite frustrating.

As for the poll at the other blog, I think that with all the crap lately about trolls and Jeff not allowing people to post (regardless of the fact that their fans are welcomed here by Al), they put on a fine display of hypocricy.  I was someone who was accused of trolling, though my only postes that they did not like were made here.

They know that they are not worthy of BCB lable and this would explain the animosity and it is just overcompensation for well....

Brew Crew Ball....
...their behavior lately stems from their mistaken belief that Bleed Cubbie Blue posters trolled them during the Brewers/Cubs series. They automatically assume that anyone who trolls them must be Cub fans and posters here. Naively, I tried to reach out to them and posted that we're not all like that, even to the point of suggesting the webmaster he could share IP addresses with Al, if he thought it really was Bleed Cubbie Blue types. The webmaster said:

"while part of a network, (this site) is basically independent. Al and I may be (very) loosely affiliated, but we don't work together, nor do I have any interest in working with anyone except for the people I've chosen. If the people who troll here want to be jerks on Al's site, too, that's his luck, or his problem, and has nothing to do with me."

Nice, eh?

And here's the poll before their latest juvenile one that's up:
-----------------------
Al from Bleed Cubbie Blue got me wondering: who ARE the most obnoxious, vitriolic fans out there?"

Cubs fans, of course
------------------------

"Cub fans, of course" was the only answer.

What it boils down to is that the guys with small Johnsons who run and post on that site (with a few exceptions) want to be able to dish it out but whine because their skin isn't tough enough to take it in return. To wit:

"i have nothing against ill will. I'll say nasty things about the cubs and certain of their fans on my site, cubs fans can say whatever they want elsewhere. I don't bother browsing those sites because, frankly, I don't care what Cubs fans say among themselves. I don't get the fascination that keeps Cubs fans coming here, either.
I'm not trying to build some happy world of bipartisanship here. I'm trying to make this site as enjoyable as possible for me and my Brewers fan friends."

And my response was:

"I want to get this straight. You're reserving the right to ban posters, yet you've got nothing against provoking them with polls that insult them. And while you want them to play nice, you're not all that enthused about them coming over here to begin with. You also have no idea why other baseball fans would want to check out another team's site.
Accurate?"

There were a few more posts from the webmaster's acolytes telling him how well he handled things, then wouldn't you know it, all the comments in the Moderation Policy thread disappeared! Gee whiz, how did that happen? The webmaster posted that gosh darn it, he still doesn't have this internets thing down yet and he hit the wrong button, and golly, all the comments are gone. Liar.

So anyway, I wrote to Al and apologized for taking it upon myself to try and smooth things over. He said not to worry. I didn't post more over there after that, but now apparently they can't let it go and have the poll about knowledgeable fans. Whatever, kids, if it makes you feel more of a man then have at it.

BeerCub
Here was my only issue with regards to this whole thing.

My comments, that I made here...as a joke whether people liked it or not, were in fact made HERE.

Posters there began to use my comments here, in an argument for banning "trolls".  I too went there to offer an explanation for my comments and was met with animosity, attacks, and disbelief.  They continued to bitch and moan like a bunch of high school kids.

My problem began when I read your comments about me and what I represented and how I was not the typical BCB poster...etc.  For the record, I never made any rude, antagonistic comments there (until maybe they began insulting me) and never deserved to be lumped in as a troll.  Other BCBers did in fact visit there and instigate conflict.

I just wish everyone had the fact before throwing me under the bus over there.  And if everyone had read the comments they had made initially at that crappy site, they would have understood my comments more, since mine included direct quotes from them (ie. "I hate the Cubs so much and their fans too").

I for one, think that site is a pathetic excuse for a forum for free speech.  The poll is just another exhibit of their inferiority complex.

MMMMM...Hebrew National

by Kinky Reggae on Jul 8, 2007 10:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That's exactly it...
...Brewers fans have an inferiority complex. Geographically speaking, the Cubs-Brewers rivalry makes about as nuch sense as Cubs-Sox; divisionally speaking it makes as much sense as Cubs-Cards. But it only exists for them. Outside of playoff implications, Cubs fans are more likely to care about our series with the Mets or the Braves.

It's key about the Braves, really -- they were Boston's second team, and then Milwaukee poached them. It was good for a while, and then... then the Braves left, as attendance had been dwindling. It wasn't until Selig was able to poach the Seattle Pilots, an expansion team, that they b=got their baseball franchise again. Hell, the Brewers have only been in the  division since '98.

Having a ballclub is abig status symbol, and I'm pretty sure that losing the Braves still stings to some of the Brewers fans, and that sort of thing has been passsed on. They're the one in the NL Central that doesn't fit - the AL expansion team that got relocated to fulfill Selig's dream of interleague play. And they don't like this a lot; they think they deserve a lot more respect than that.

The solution? Don't give it to them. Don't post over at BrewCrewBall - I read it, sure, just like I read VivaElBirdos. But don't give them the satisfaction of having "ignorant Cubs fans" validating their notion of what our rivalry is. We don't have a rivalry. They're leading the divison and we're not - yet. That's it. And we've already closed four games of the lead. Five more games and it's our division. And then we don't have to care about the Brewers at all, and that's how we REALLY tick them off.

Ummm...ok
Whatever you say, there, sport.  This might come as a surprise to you, but we really don't think about Chicago that much unless we need to go to IKEA.

I will say this: the Cubs series are the biggest series of the year for us, hands down: you're close, your fans show up by the thousands at Miller Park, and it's Wisconsin/Illinois.  (Other than Chicago, I personally think the Pirates would be the Brewers' next best rival: our teams have followed pretty similar paths of late, and they always seem to have our number, especially in Pittsburgh.)

I wouldn't expect the Brewers to be your biggest rival, necessarily.  To be honest, we haven't put all that good a team on the field for quite some time; it's no fun being a rival of a bad team.  I think we have a better organization now, though, and I think we're finally starting to put some good teams together.

The second half should be good, I think.  Although we can mash with the best of them, we have trouble scoring runs without the home run, and our starting pitching of late has been atrocious.  (Hello, Nationals!) The division is certainly up for grabs, and if you keep winning the way you have been, I doubt we'll be able to keep our lead for long.

Just the same, if we do manage to win the division and the Cubs land in second, I'd be willing to bet the Brewers would become your #1 rival.  Maybe not Bears/Packers, but hey, you have to start somewhere.

by roguejim on Jul 9, 2007 5:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No more than...
...the Astros became our big rivals after 2004. Now, if you want to make the arguement that with the Brewers' core of young talent they're gonna be around for a while, and with the Cardinals lacking anything beyond Colby Rasmus in the farm system after they destroyed Anthony Reyes - and the Cardinals refusal to become sellers and to try and actually rebuild - the division could become these two teams for a while, I might listen.

But it takes more than one season to build the sort of emotional rivalry I'm talking about, and the Brewers spent the '60s in Seattle and the 70's, 80's and 90's in the NL, so that sort of chance hasn't developed yet.

FREE CARMEN PIGNATIELLO!

True enough
This rivalry theory is contingent on the Brewers continuing to put a good team on the field.  If we go out and sign Jeffrey Hammonds again, all bets are off.  :)

I guess I think the proximity is the biggest thing: we would have been one of the better rivals if we actually had a good team, because we're so close and Wisconsin/Illinois are rivals at everything.  If that good team is starting to emerge, then we might actually have something here.  This could be one of the better rivalries in baseball, in time.

Re. proposed revised poll
I did not want to exclude Milwaukee fans entirely, as was their purpose.  Please read the Milwaukee entry on the poll carefully.  From some of the comments here, BCB readers (the TRUE BCB) did get it.

I also answer "Yes" to the question about 'Cubs or Sox fan?'  Then if the White Sox "fan" continues to probe further, I eventually lower the boom with my explanation about how my Dad astutely shaped my early baseball education, by sharing his thoughts about Ted Williams as the greatest pure hitter ever.  And from that moment forward, I became a RED Sox fan, as well as a Cubs fan!

Try this - it's a wonderfully satisfying way to leave "typical" band wagoning, 'I only support them when they're winning attitude'- type White Sox "fans" grumbling or speechless with no quick comeback at all.

Good one! Errr...
Well, I don't think calling the Brewers "the Braves" is as devastating a slam as you think it is, but hey, it's your poll.

(And that's the point of this whole BCB brew-ha-ha: this is a Cubs blog.  Of COURSE you're going to make fun of the Brewers.  It's not like we don't have material --- how long has it been since we had a winning season, like, 13 years?  And we're going to make fun of the Cubs as well.  It's all about good fun, isn't it?)

Anyway, as for your poll, in the fine tradition of Chicago voiting, I voted twice.  :)

it looks like the majority of posters on Brew Crew Ball are decent fellows who enjoy baseball and Brewers baseball in particular.  Yet, there are some real mean-spirited morons who post and the administrator of the sight is a grade-a jerk.

in the spirit of this cubs/brewers conversation
I'm actually going to be at Miller Park Saturday for a bachelor party. I have been charged with bringing the stuff for baggo. I full intent to bring our Bears - Packers set and wear my Cubs hat and a shirt. I'm not one to trash talk so I don't forsee myself being the on to start any confrontations, but I am trying to decide if I wanna risk any problems with the locals. I fully intend to just kick back and enjoy a good baseball game (Brewers - Giants) and possibly heckle Barry Bonds a bit.

Anyone wanna put odds on the likelyhood of me having problems?

Rogue Jim? you wanna weigh in on this one?

I bet you'll be left alone, for the most part.  I mean, it's possible you'll run into a drunken Brewers fan who'll be an ass, but I haven't seen or heard of a lot of Cubs badgering in the stadium.

(Incidentally, I had my bachelor party at one of the last games at County Stadium.)

Be sure to bring tailgating supplies!

random drunks is ok. that's going to happen no matter where you go. to be honest with you I really wasn't expecting anything I was just curious.

I'm not in charge of this trip, but I think the plan is to get there as the gates open and eat, drink, and play baggo till just a bit before the game starts before sprinting to our seats.

I've been up to Miller Park several times over the years and I'd like to believe that I have it figured it out. (gotta get a spot by the sausage haus)
