Is Prince's ejection going to be like Lou's?

Here is my question. When Prince got rung' up and began to argue with the home plate umpire, the replays I saw Fielder seemed to make some contact with the ump. We all know Lou was suspended for making contact with the ump during his eruption. So.............. Prince should get suspended for his contact today, but will he. What are your thoughts and ideas on this situation. I know this is a big streach coming up the rest of this month for both teams and with out him it would hurt them some. Could this prove to be costly for the Brewers or will they cruise by without him if and when he is suspended.

Correct me if need be
Lou got suspended for contact with the ump....

So Ned and Prince should be gone

by miamicanes on Aug 12, 2007 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

If they made contact,
(I haven't seen the replays yet) then they should both be suspended. It's in MLB's hands now. Yost may only get a game for putting a hand on, but if Fielder is judged to have tried to intimidate the umpire by making contact, he could get a 5-7 gamer. However, if it was only incidental contact, he'll get two games, as that's what they've given a couple guys this year, most recently Gary Sheffield. If Sheff only got two games, Fielder probably won't get any more than that.

I hope
Should he?  I hope.

Will he?  Our luck no.

Is this something he can appeal?  If he does could it go without being served until next year?

Regardless if Brewers lose him for even 2 games we need to take advantage of it!

we're talking about the brewers right.?
And Bud Selig makes the decision...
nope no conflict of interest here

by jds2 on Aug 13, 2007 8:06 AM CDT reply actions

Why is it...
... that people continue to insist that Selig has some sort of "conflict of interest" with the Brewers? The Brewers are no longer owned by Selig, nor does anyone in his family have any connection with them. The only "connection" is that they are both located in Milwaukee.

Further, Selig does not make decisions on suspensions. Bob Watson does. And he's been pretty tough, or at least tried to be, and sometimes tougher than he had to be.

There isn't.
What would make you think there is?

I am guessing...
...that the intimation is that Selig is still emotionally invested in the Brewers' success.

I'd be willing to buy that, maybe... certainly moving the team to Milwaukee in the first place was quite an expression of ego by Selig.

Sure, it was.
But that happened thirty-seven years ago.

He sold the Brewers off and moved on several years back.

I just don't think Selig is going to make this decision, nor is he going to make ANY decision with regard only to his former team.

The last thing he did as commissioner that really benefitted the Brewers was getting them moved to the National League. That was NINE YEARS AGO.

You all can take your tinfoil hats off now.

No, he doesn't.
Bob Watson has the final say, period.

I assume that
you know this from first hand knowledge not what you are told by the MLB. What does the MLB have to gain by saying that there very public commissioner has final say instead of Bob Watson who most have barely heard of?  I don't have any proof but I would guess that Selig does in fact have final say

Here's some more info.
This press release from 2005 tells about Watson, his duties, and who he reports to.

The CEO of any company -- and that's what Selig is -- will generally delegate authority to his/her department heads, which is what Jimmie Solomon is. Any CEO who puts his/her hands in every single little decision is asking for trouble. Micromanagers rarely succeed.

I suppose Selig COULD have the final say on all suspensions, but I doubt he'd get involved in this one, nor was he likely involved in the decision on the Piniella and Derrek Lee suspensions.

You're making an assumption because Selig lives in Milwaukee and USED TO own the Brewers, that he'd get involved in such a decision. You may not like Selig -- and I don't like every single thing he's done -- but I'd think he has enough integrity to leave these decisions to the people he has put in place to make them.

by Al Yellon on Aug 13, 2007 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions

What evidence has Selig given
that he doesn't have final say in suspensions?  Though I agree with you that I don't whether he was involved in the D.Lee and Piniella suspensions. We will see if the process is fair based on the suspension to Yost (if any).

I think you're asking the wrong question.
What evidence do YOU have that Selig DOES have any say in suspensions, and specifically that he would make a decision that would benefit his former team?

If you've got any, let's see it.

before this year
what help could he give the Brewers They were never really close to the playoffs, so where can my evidence come from? I am just saying that there is a possible conflict of interest and we will see if im right when/if Yost and Prince's suspensions are anounced

Also with him being the CEO
That gives him jurisdiction over things like suspension if he wanted to have it.

I still haven't seen...
... one shred of evidence from you that he will actually do this, or has done it in the past.

Al
I concede the point that there may not be any evidence that Bud has used his power as comish to help/hurt one team over another.  I hope you are willing to concede that it is would be equally difficult to provide evidence proving he did not.

However it appears, in my opinion, that Bud let his personal feelings get involved in his handeling of Bonds hitting 756...being reminded to stand (with hands in pockets) when bonds tied the record...not being there when the record is broken...bringing up the questioning of the record during his congratulatory statement...

Now it doesn't seem unreasonable to assume if his personally feelings effect one part of his job then it could be called into question if another part of his job could be affected.  for example i question why when there were talks about consolidation (Twins/expos)  why weren't the brewers mentioned...how come the brewers got shipped into the NL central during realignment...

The problem is Bud opens himself up for criticism by being a former owner of a team he now governs and could therefore be linked to that team, wether fair or not.  This is something the other major sports do not do.

Roger Goodell...NFL Commish...former COO off NFL never owned a team

David Stern...NBA Commish...Former NBA Lawyer and Ex. VP of the NBA never owned a team.

by jds2 on Aug 13, 2007 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you...
.. that Bud pushed the Brewers into the NL with his influence (IIRC, the team that really badly wanted to get into the NL Central was the Royals, and Bud squashed that).

However -- directly interfering in a pennant race by influencing a suspension of a single player? I can't believe that he'd do that. He might be a former car dealer, but he's got to have that much integrity.

There is no way rgiht now to tell
either way if he is going to be fair, but he is in a HUGE position of power with a strong interest in one side. The only way to tell is what the suspension is to Prince/ Yost
GO CUBS GO!!!!!!

Didn't Lou...
get 5 suspended games partly because he allegedly "incited" the crowd in addition to making contact with the umpire? I didn't see Prince's ejection but if the contact was incidental, I don't see him getting suspended more than 1-2 games.

by manny k on Aug 13, 2007 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

seen on TV.....
Fielder is moving towards the UMP giving him a slight belly shove and then Yost comes in and wedges in there with his arms attempting to cut off Fielder but is shooving the ump.

Got to get both 5 games minimum...

Fielder didn't do
anything more than Sheff did in his confrontation, so I doubt he'll get more than two games. Yost may get a longer suspension, because he seemed to really get into the umps chest.

When I first saw it
I noticed the swift movement of Fielders arm towards the head of the ump, and I thought he really did hit him in the head but it turned out he was just pointing at him while he was yelling

by miamicanes on Aug 13, 2007 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it did look like a swing
at first, and that's exactly what Sheff did, too. Their tirdaes were pretty similar, so Prince is prob looking at 2 games, max. Sheff's a repeat offender here, too, so maybe Prince only gets a game.
