It's time for the big boys to take control

35 games to go, 1.5 game lead and a mediocre (at best) division.

To date, they have milked everything they can out of DeRosa, Theriot, most of the starters, the pen and even ole Jaque Jones the last six weeks.  The time has come, for Lee, Ramirez, Soriano and Zambrano, to take turns putting this team on their backs the next 30 games and putting this thing to rest.  The Cards smell blood, and I don't care how bad they look on paper, LaRussa will get everything he can out of that crew for the duration.

If me math is correct, the Cubs have about $400 million committed to these guys, and the time has come for a little "ROI"

Cubs probably win 84 games
beat the Cards between 83 (worst case) and 81 wins (best case) scenerio, Brewers appear to be in continued downward spiral and probably won't reach 79 wins....they are not the team to focus on although  this week they are.

Cubs should take 2 of 3 but I think they could sweep the falling Brewers who are 18-31 since July 1st....while the Cards are playing .560 ball since July 1st.

Either way as the Cardinals and Tigers proved last year once you are in the playoffs it is a new season.

Another consideration is as follows: Cardinals play 12 games against contenders (15 if you include Milwaukee) and the Cubs play 9 games against contenders (12 if you include Milwaukee).

Take that consideration that the composite of those teams

Cubs also have 21 games against last place or within one game of last place and the Cardinals have 19 against said opponents. With composite record .446 of 8-9 wins or Cards win 10 or 11, while they have 9-10 wins against the Cubs or the Cubs win 11-12...advantage Cubs....while against the contenders consider it split 6-6...meaning 16 or 17 wins for the Cards....79-80 not counting the 3 games with Milwaukee who are playing horrible but at home, meaning Cards are either 81 or 82...

While the Cubs contenders are the LAD and StL (total 9 games) Cubs probably go 4-5...and 12-9 against last place teams, 16 wins and 82 not counting Milwaukee (2 or 3) or 84 wins.....

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7
