I don't have time
to check his yearly stats, but if I recall he was an on again off again type pitcher. Hopefully he is on again. Welcome back!

It's an odd year...
That means it's his off year.  Lets hope he still has something in the tank.  At least he wasn't here for the Air show.  I still remember him being on the mound one year when the jets buzzed Wrigley and he totally freaked.

even if moore

what?
have you looked at the guy at all?  he was a top 10 pick in the draft and is what, 23 years old?

he has 19 jacks in 321 at bats, hes a legitimate prospect you dont just toss down the toliet.

also, as far as "overvaluing" i was preaching hill and theriot while others were hating, now any person who knocked those guys is eating his or her words.

you dont have to be a hall of famer to help a team win a championship.

im not sure i understand the point of this
all im saying is that sometimes the guys you like do pan out.  i wrote an article why i thought theriot was a legitimate .300 hitter back in july of last year...and specifically noted how his sample was completely different than cedenos sample when he started off hot, so no, i didnt preach cedeno.  and how could anyone preach patterson, hes had like 7 at bats?  omalley?  i didnt care enough about our prospects when choi was a prospect.  murton, yes, i still like the guy.

what are you saying here?

funny you say that
because i will readily admit and own up to that line of thinking, figuring that gallagher would be ready next year and hoping that veal would be next year also.

im no fan of mateo, but i do like guzman a lot and was willing to look past the injury history and just as his nasty stuff.

i have no problem admitting i was wrong on the pitching front, you can never have enough pitching.

i was a big corey patterson fan
definitely wrong on that one, though i still dont agree with giving him up for nothing, i didnt think it made sense to trade corey for nothing and sign jacque, figuring they should just play corey in right for basically free.  and while corey hasnt turned out close to how i thought he would, hes still a good basestealer and great defender that we got nothing for.

but i am guilty as charged on patterson.  im also guilty in liking juan cruz and not being happy about the maddux signing because it would "block cruz" from the rotation.

Funny every trade is horrible
First it was Kendall, then Monroe now Trach...I bet the Cubs move Marshall after this start to the bullpen and set him up for the Cardinals DH and then have him for a long reliever down the stretch.

Trachsel 12 out of 24 quality starts is a 5th starter category with experience. Listen the Cubs are looking how they can go 18-12 down the stretch...every addition helps out.

I'm scratching my head at this move.  The only think I can think of is that Z (gulp) may be hurt?

This moves reaks of desperation from a team that isn't desperate.  Cherry and Moore could have been moved for a better player.

Is there a plausible explanation for this?

412
His magic number in Sept/Oct. He has career wise pitched 412.2 innings allowed 412 hits with a 4.12 ERA. Kind of strange.

2.37
August ERA.  I would imagine that has something to do with it.  The purpose of this move is to win NOW.  Not to win next year.  The on again off again has nothing to do with it.  If he is on right now, that is what they want, the cubs need bolstering in the rotation, and that is what they are getting, a veteran who is hot and hopefully will help get them into the postseason.  This isn't about next year.

A bit of a head-scratcher
On the one hand, he's been pitching well lately, and Scott Moore doesn't have a role with this team and 29 other GMs know it.  But trading Cherry as well, that seems extreme.  Couldn't we have traded Ohman instead?

I have to assume that Hendry had to add Cherry to keep him away from Milwaukee or St. Louis.... but then why didn't one of those teams claim him??

On the other hand, what does this do to a potential playoff roster?  Now you have to think that both Marquis and Marshall would be candidates for the bullpen.  They really only need six relievers, and they have seven:

RHP: Dempster, Howry, Marmol, Marquis, Wood
LHP: Eyre, Marshall

by Invalid User on Aug 31, 2007 1:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

so
your putting trachsel in the starting rotation?? i dont think that is going to happen. he will be our long man which also maybe can help save marmol for later innings instead of having to use him sometimes in the 6th or 7th inning.
put soriano in the 5-hole please!!!!

by tbizzle83 on Aug 31, 2007 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure
I don't know who I would use as the 5th starter, Traschel or Marshall.  In general, I'd personally use Marshall, but I think it would depend on the opponents that would come up in that slot the rest of the season.   And somehow, I think Lou will prefer use Traschel as the starter and Marshall as the long man.

Obviously, they'll both start in the go-around including the Cardinals DH, and they both may start if there is other bad weather (such as a couple of weeks ago when Z's start got rained out after three innings).

by Invalid User on Aug 31, 2007 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Was never sold
on Cherry. Granted his name was a keeper. But at 28 years old I just did not see much upside in him. As for Ohman, you can bet he has a bad name not just in Chicago, but around baseball.

not that bad of a trade
the role he will be playing is something we need so im not mad about getting him. but i dont like trading cherry away i think he will be a nice bullpin pitcher in the next couple years. at least they are showing they want to win THIS YEAR. i dont see trachsel being on this club for more then this year.

these are trade chips
you have a limited number of them in the organization

Scot Moore is one of the more valuable ones and you just traded him "in case someone gets hurt"

that seems silly

the chances of the Steve Trachsel move making a difference in this playoff race are less than 10% (given he might pitch in 10 games????)

the odds of Scot Moore being used to acquire a better player than Steve Trachsel down the line.... pretty good

Scot Moore was arguably our most valuable trade chip at 23 posting a .900 OPS in AAA

he's not going to be a superstar but he's exactly the kind of guy the Cubs should be using in trades with small market teams to acquire big upgrades

Steve Trachsel is not a big upgrade

2.37 ERA in August
How's Jason Kendall doing?  Do you like any moves Hendry makes?
SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!

by CubFaninCA on Aug 31, 2007 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kendall
is hitting great and i'll admit i was wrong on that front

but he's basically the same as what we had in Barrett coming into this season

above average offense, ATROCIOUS defense (yes worse than Barrett)

but yes i was wrong on the Kendall move

actually i was the one BIG on signing Lilly this offseason, so i do like some of Hendry's moves

here's a list of what i've advocated and been against on this site:

Advocated Lilly
Against Soriano

Advocated Marshall and Guzman
Against Marquis (especially for the price) and Miller

Advocated Rich Hill
Against Sean Marshall vs. Rich Hill (said specifically Marshall would regress and is more of a low-mid 4's ERA pitcher)

Advocated Matt Murton
Against Cliff Floyd

Advocated Geovanny Soto
Against Koyie Hill

Advocated Theriot
Against Izturis

and yes i have no problem admitting when i'm wrong on things (like the Barrett trade) which really turned out to be right move because MB has completely fallen apart offensively. I said before and I stand by it that the defense part of the equation was being overrated. My complaints when we acquired Kendall were he was as bad as Barrett defensively and couldnt hit either. Turned out i was REALLY wrong about how he hit, which has been the difference

Kendall has now become Barrett, and i'm fine with that

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is no way
that Kendall is anywhere near as bad defensively as Barrett.  Not even close.  Pitchers were afraid to throw to Barrett and they aren't afraid to throw to Kendall.

It's just plain silly to suggest that Kendall and Barrett are equal defensively especially if one were to take into account the way they handle a pitching staff.

by NO100 on Aug 31, 2007 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

how would you like to measure it?
Michael Barrett as a Cub:

CERA = 4.17
CS% = .179
SBs allowed per game = .58

Jason Kendall as a Cub:

CERA = 4.29
CS% = .070
SB/game = 1.18

so we've covered the pitcher's ERA when he's behind the plate and the ability to hold baserunners

what else would you be interested in?

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But you just
told everyone that ERA is a luck-driven statistic!

I'm interested in the Cubs record with Barrett behind the plate versus their record when Barrett isn't behind the plate.

by cubsbak on Aug 31, 2007 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it is
but people for some reason think certain catchers are better at "handling" pitchers than others

and if this naive idea was actually true we'd see a distinct disparity between the two catchers ERA when behind the plate

here are the stats since you're too lazy to look them up yourself

Cubs record with Kendall 17-18 (.486)

Cubs record with Barrett 25-32 (.439)

not sure how this has a significant impact since catchers themselves arent responsible for team record, but there they are....

Cubs are also 2-0 with Soto
25-11 with Hill
6-10 with Blanco

records overlap because they count any game in which the player appeared

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you're gonna make
me add it up myself, huh?

Cubs with Barrett behind the plate: 25-32
Cubs with anyone else behind the plate: 50-39

'Nuff said.

What's naive is someone thinking catchers ERA is any real reflection of a catcher's ability to handle pitchers.  But you keep pumping out those silly stats about which you obviously understand very little.  It explains a lot about your many ill-informed opinions.

Regarding the records, I don't give a crap about what you're sure of or what you think the impact is or any of your other stupid "random opinions" based on "confirmation bias" etc.  I just wanted the "facts."

I would've looked them up myself but you were so nice to ask "what else would we would be interested in" I thought I'd take you up on it.

by cubsbak on Aug 31, 2007 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?
So CERA is irrelevant to a catcher's ability, but wins/losses isn't irrelevant?  Seriously?

You do know that a catcher is not the only person responsible for a team's success, right?

Let me guess... you also think that Marquis is a better pitcher than Rich Hill because the Cubs have a better record when Marquis starts, right?

by big_lowitzki on Aug 31, 2007 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's simple
Pitchers were afraid to throw to Barrett and they aren't afraid to throw to Kendall.

Listen, I'm not going to get into a stats argument about this.  If your eyes can't tell you that Kendall is by far the better defensive player. then I don't know what to tell you.  Don't get me wrong ... stats are very important, however, sometimes the obfuscate more than they illuminate.

There's no doubt that Kendall is a superior defensive player.  It's just not arguable.

I'm not trying to rank Kendall in any way in comparison to other catchers.  I know he's no Jadier Molina. He's just better than Barrett.

by NO100 on Sep 3, 2007 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course
its inarguable if you eliminate any sort of objective measure

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 4, 2007 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In this case
the objective measurables tell an incomplete story.  There's more to the argument than that.

Can you tell me the number of runs saved because one of the guys didn't make an error when the other would have?  Of course not.  You can't show me what would happen if something else didn't happen.

I think the most important stat to keep in mind is:
Number of pitching staffs afraid to throw to Barrett: 1
Number of pitching staffs afraid to throw to Kendall: 0

Seriously, you're being blinded by stats if you think that Kendall is anywhere near as bad defensively as Barrett is.  Visual inspection should be able to tell you so.

by NO100 on Sep 4, 2007 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was also in favor of Lilly
I was lukewarm on Marquis not because I thought he would block any of the kids but because I didn't think he would pitch this well.  I didn't think any of the kids other than Hill were ready for the rotation.  Since last season, I have said that Marmol belongs in the pen not the rotation.  Glad to see that has worked out.

My bad one was Theriot.  I thought he would be lucky to hold an OBP over .330.  I'm still not sold on him but for now I'll happily admit I was wrong.

by rlpete on Aug 31, 2007 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ERA
are you aware ERA is partially a luck-driven statistic?

Trachsel's expected ERA this year is over 5

and in August he's walked 18 guys and struck out 8 in 38 innings

that's not pitching well

that's getting lucky

by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Cubs also have a lot of games
in the next few weeks.  They don't have a day off until the 20th and one double header in there.  Hendry got a veteran arm that knows Wrigley field who is pitching well right now.  Trachsel can gie the startign rotation a bit of a break.

I think this is a fine move.

by NO100 on Aug 31, 2007 1:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe this means Guzman isn't going to be ready?
That's the only thing I can think here.  This is a role that we need filled - we haven't had a legitimate long man / spot starter since Guzman went down.

With Guzman coming back, though, I would think this role is filled.  Maybe his rehab isn't going as well as expected?

by CubFaninCA on Aug 31, 2007 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would sort of make sense
...but I'm hearing Trachsel will be the long man.

Moving Marshall to the pen would make sense - it would give us another dependable lefty out of the pen, and Marshall has been completely unable to go deep into games, so maybe he's destined for that role anyway.

Of course, Trachsel has been averaging almost the same number of innings / start this year, and has been doing it with a much lower K rate, and a higher WHIP.

All told though, there's less of a drop off between the two than I expected when I started comparing the numbers.

Dependable lefty
are the key words there.  I think Lou will try him out...

and the Cardinals didn't acquire him
leaving their pitching very questionable.

I'd give up Scott Moore
just to keep Traschel off of either the Cardinal or Brewer rotations in September.

That's exactly what a spare part like Moore is for, once you determine he does not project to a starter.  It's not like Moore projects to be Jeff Bagwell, for God's sake.

Hmmm... I don't know if I like that comparison
Bagwell wasn't projected to be Bagwell, either.  And he was acquired for an old fart at the end of August.  Now, I don't expect the same results from this trade, but it's a pretty spooky comparison.

experience is over rated
we have not won a world series in almost 100 years, i am sure that we have had several guys who have experience, its over-rated.  I bet the players hate this guy, he is so slow and many of these players have made comments on playing in a quicker style.

Maybe the thought hear is that by starting him every fifth day it will be like giving our guys a day off.  the other bad part of this is that i will have to set my DVR for 2 hours of extended record time.

The other thing lets move Marmol to the closer role.  His pitches are have much more movement than Dempster.  He is a one pitch guy and gets so "lucky" saves.

by cubsfaninkc on Aug 31, 2007 1:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Marmol's more effective
as the guy who comes in to squash a big inning.  There aren't many guys who can get outta jams like Marmol..

In the future, I'd like to see Marmol given the closers role, and wouldn't mind the Cubs dealing Dempster in the offseason for hitting.

Putting the Band Back Together
There's still time to get Sammy back, too.

I've seen Trachsel a couple of times this year in Baltimore.  Excruciating, but watching Marshall today makes me think it may be worth it.

Not sure what to think
Trachsel can help I suppose.  And yeah, we didn't give up the next Jeff Bagwell, but Moore AND Cherry?  On their own neither is worth much but together they're only worth Steve Trachsel?  I dunno.  I guess I'm okay with the trade since it improves our chances.  Don't fall asleep out there Steve.

Here's the deal....Moore and Cherry
Moore was blocked and with the drafting of Vitters Cubs are set at 3B with Ramirez- DeRosa for now. Moore is alot like Hinske, so here is the deal, Cubs feel they are just this or that to get over the top to win the division.

They get a veteran 14 years, playoff experience in '98 and 2006....this will give the Cubs some breathing space over the next 20 or so games...

Cherry was not going to amount to much at the MLB level

Milw-09-24-98--Brown in for defense--bases loaded--flyball--HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!NO NO NO, cubs lose 8-7

Wow. I was right
I think we should take
Steve Traschel.

Before you go off on me, if the O's pay a substantial portion of his salary, then the guy can pitch middle relief for us if Marshall has a short outing.  I would not want the guy pitching more than that.  However, he has a 4.48 ERA in a very tough AL East division and you have to respect that.

So what if he's old and slow. If the O's pay off most of his salary, I'd go for it.  Let them have Ohman in return.

I'm thinking with all the upcoming games
Lou goes with a 6 man rotation for the next 12 and then whoever has performed better between Trachsel and Marshall will be the 5th starter for the rest of the season.

Just look at the good side of the trade, when Trachel is pitching in Wrigley you won't feel bad when the Beer vendors stop selling Beers after the 7th inning because you would feel like you got 10 innings of drinking in by then.

A good day for me is a cubs win and a sox loss.
