Cubs interested in Trachsel?
I don't get why this would be true:

Funny every trade is horrible
Trachsel 12 out of 24 quality starts is a 5th starter category with experience. Listen the Cubs are looking how they can go 18-12 down the stretch...every addition helps out.

A bit of a head-scratcher
I have to assume that Hendry had to add Cherry to keep him away from Milwaukee or St. Louis.... but then why didn't one of those teams claim him??
On the other hand, what does this do to a potential playoff roster? Now you have to think that both Marquis and Marshall would be candidates for the bullpen. They really only need six relievers, and they have seven:
RHP: Dempster, Howry, Marmol, Marquis, Wood
LHP: Eyre, Marshall

by wild bill on Aug 31, 2007 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
these are trade chips
Scot Moore is one of the more valuable ones and you just traded him "in case someone gets hurt"
that seems silly
the chances of the Steve Trachsel move making a difference in this playoff race are less than 10% (given he might pitch in 10 games????)
the odds of Scot Moore being used to acquire a better player than Steve Trachsel down the line.... pretty good
Scot Moore was arguably our most valuable trade chip at 23 posting a .900 OPS in AAA
he's not going to be a superstar but he's exactly the kind of guy the Cubs should be using in trades with small market teams to acquire big upgrades
Steve Trachsel is not a big upgrade

2.37 ERA in August
by CubFaninCA on Aug 31, 2007 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kendall
but he's basically the same as what we had in Barrett coming into this season
above average offense, ATROCIOUS defense (yes worse than Barrett)
but yes i was wrong on the Kendall move
actually i was the one BIG on signing Lilly this offseason, so i do like some of Hendry's moves
here's a list of what i've advocated and been against on this site:
Advocated Lilly
Against Soriano
Advocated Marshall and Guzman
Against Marquis (especially for the price) and Miller
Advocated Rich Hill
Against Sean Marshall vs. Rich Hill (said specifically Marshall would regress and is more of a low-mid 4's ERA pitcher)
Advocated Matt Murton
Against Cliff Floyd
Advocated Geovanny Soto
Against Koyie Hill
Advocated Theriot
Against Izturis
and yes i have no problem admitting when i'm wrong on things (like the Barrett trade) which really turned out to be right move because MB has completely fallen apart offensively. I said before and I stand by it that the defense part of the equation was being overrated. My complaints when we acquired Kendall were he was as bad as Barrett defensively and couldnt hit either. Turned out i was REALLY wrong about how he hit, which has been the difference
Kendall has now become Barrett, and i'm fine with that
by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is no way
It's just plain silly to suggest that Kendall and Barrett are equal defensively especially if one were to take into account the way they handle a pitching staff.
by NO100 on Aug 31, 2007 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
how would you like to measure it?
CERA = 4.17
CS% = .179
SBs allowed per game = .58
Jason Kendall as a Cub:
CERA = 4.29
CS% = .070
SB/game = 1.18
so we've covered the pitcher's ERA when he's behind the plate and the ability to hold baserunners
what else would you be interested in?
by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But you just
I'm interested in the Cubs record with Barrett behind the plate versus their record when Barrett isn't behind the plate.
by cubsbak on Aug 31, 2007 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it is
and if this naive idea was actually true we'd see a distinct disparity between the two catchers ERA when behind the plate
here are the stats since you're too lazy to look them up yourself
Cubs record with Kendall 17-18 (.486)
Cubs record with Barrett 25-32 (.439)
not sure how this has a significant impact since catchers themselves arent responsible for team record, but there they are....
Cubs are also 2-0 with Soto
25-11 with Hill
6-10 with Blanco
records overlap because they count any game in which the player appeared
by DartmouthCubsFan on Aug 31, 2007 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So you're gonna make
Cubs with Barrett behind the plate: 25-32
Cubs with anyone else behind the plate: 50-39
'Nuff said.
What's naive is someone thinking catchers ERA is any real reflection of a catcher's ability to handle pitchers. But you keep pumping out those silly stats about which you obviously understand very little. It explains a lot about your many ill-informed opinions.
Regarding the records, I don't give a crap about what you're sure of or what you think the impact is or any of your other stupid "random opinions" based on "confirmation bias" etc. I just wanted the "facts."
I would've looked them up myself but you were so nice to ask "what else would we would be interested in" I thought I'd take you up on it.
by cubsbak on Aug 31, 2007 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What?
You do know that a catcher is not the only person responsible for a team's success, right?
Let me guess... you also think that Marquis is a better pitcher than Rich Hill because the Cubs have a better record when Marquis starts, right?
by big_lowitzki on Aug 31, 2007 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's simple
Listen, I'm not going to get into a stats argument about this. If your eyes can't tell you that Kendall is by far the better defensive player. then I don't know what to tell you. Don't get me wrong ... stats are very important, however, sometimes the obfuscate more than they illuminate.
There's no doubt that Kendall is a superior defensive player. It's just not arguable.
I'm not trying to rank Kendall in any way in comparison to other catchers. I know he's no Jadier Molina. He's just better than Barrett.
by NO100 on Sep 3, 2007 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
of course
by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 4, 2007 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In this case
Can you tell me the number of runs saved because one of the guys didn't make an error when the other would have? Of course not. You can't show me what would happen if something else didn't happen.
I think the most important stat to keep in mind is:
Number of pitching staffs afraid to throw to Barrett: 1
Number of pitching staffs afraid to throw to Kendall: 0
Seriously, you're being blinded by stats if you think that Kendall is anywhere near as bad defensively as Barrett is. Visual inspection should be able to tell you so.
by NO100 on Sep 4, 2007 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was also in favor of Lilly
My bad one was Theriot. I thought he would be lucky to hold an OBP over .330. I'm still not sold on him but for now I'll happily admit I was wrong.

ERA
Trachsel's expected ERA this year is over 5
and in August he's walked 18 guys and struck out 8 in 38 innings
that's not pitching well
that's getting lucky

I think this is a fine move.
by NO100 on Aug 31, 2007 1:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe this means Guzman isn't going to be ready?
With Guzman coming back, though, I would think this role is filled. Maybe his rehab isn't going as well as expected?
by Wreckard on Aug 31, 2007 1:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
In the diary
Angel Guzman starts and goes 2 innings (1H, 1BB, and 2Ks).
This was for the AZL. I am susprised he pitched again this year.

I think
by CubFaninCA on Aug 31, 2007 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That would sort of make sense
Moving Marshall to the pen would make sense - it would give us another dependable lefty out of the pen, and Marshall has been completely unable to go deep into games, so maybe he's destined for that role anyway.
Of course, Trachsel has been averaging almost the same number of innings / start this year, and has been doing it with a much lower K rate, and a higher WHIP.
All told though, there's less of a drop off between the two than I expected when I started comparing the numbers.

I'd give up Scott Moore
That's exactly what a spare part like Moore is for, once you determine he does not project to a starter. It's not like Moore projects to be Jeff Bagwell, for God's sake.

Hmmm... I don't know if I like that comparison
by davidalanu on Sep 1, 2007 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
experience is over rated
Maybe the thought hear is that by starting him every fifth day it will be like giving our guys a day off. the other bad part of this is that i will have to set my DVR for 2 hours of extended record time.
The other thing lets move Marmol to the closer role. His pitches are have much more movement than Dempster. He is a one pitch guy and gets so "lucky" saves.
by cubsfaninkc on Aug 31, 2007 1:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Marmol's more effective
In the future, I'd like to see Marmol given the closers role, and wouldn't mind the Cubs dealing Dempster in the offseason for hitting.

They get a veteran 14 years, playoff experience in '98 and 2006....this will give the Cubs some breathing space over the next 20 or so games...
Cherry was not going to amount to much at the MLB level
by Ivy Walls on Aug 31, 2007 4:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Wow. I was right
Steve Traschel.
Before you go off on me, if the O's pay a substantial portion of his salary, then the guy can pitch middle relief for us if Marshall has a short outing. I would not want the guy pitching more than that. However, he has a 4.48 ERA in a very tough AL East division and you have to respect that.
So what if he's old and slow. If the O's pay off most of his salary, I'd go for it. Let them have Ohman in return.

Just look at the good side of the trade, when Trachel is pitching in Wrigley you won't feel bad when the Beer vendors stop selling Beers after the 7th inning because you would feel like you got 10 innings of drinking in by then.
