Lets try again. Eric "not Corey" Patterson Called up

cubs.com recently just announce EPatt is to be called up for the game tonight presumably with Soriano going to the 15-Day DL.  It doesn't say where patterson will be playing but he has had limited PT in the OF while primarily being a 2B.  Batting leadoff his hit .300 w/ a .365 OBP.

While I like Pie, I am glad that EPatt is given this chance since MLB pitchers will probably not have as much scouting on EPatt as FPie.  So hopefully he can get hot and add the youth movement of the 2007 Cubs.

Let's not
start on the Corey stuff on Eric.  They are very different ballplayers and from what I've read, very different people.  Corey is shy, sensitive and stubborn, for example, and Eric is gregarious and very flexible.

They're brothers and I'm sure they love each other very much, but let's not compare Eric to Corey.

Sorry
I didn't mean to compare Eric to Corey.  I am big fan of EPatt largely because he is not like Corey.  However, I think that if the cubs drafted EPatt had even a little to do with his brother being on the team at the time then that might be the bes thing CPatt did for us.

Sure
I understand what you're doing.  I'm not as big an Eric Patterson fan as you apparently are, but I think he'll be a decent major league player.  I'm just worried that the first time he swings at a pitch in the dirt, someone around here is going to make a "K-K-KorEric" comment.

Nobody would ever compare Eric to Corey if they weren't brothers.  That's my point, and I think comparing them is unfair to Eric and unfair to Corey.

So I guess we'll be seeing...
...much more Mark DeRosa in right field then? I don't believe EPatt was being seriously considered as a right fielder. I'd guess he and Fontenot will split time at second base?

Patterson
has played a lot of left field in Iowa.  So he could be playing there.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 6, 2007 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That's what I would think
It wouldn't make sense to have another left-handed second baseman, would it?  I must say I'm a little confused as to where Patterson's gonna play.

by cubsbak on Aug 6, 2007 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see why...
Patterson could play LF, and we could stick with the Floyd/DeRosa/Pagan/Murton thing in RF.

I'm still skeptical that Patterson will actually see much playing time, but we'll see.  At least the fact that they're calling him up and theoretically removing someone from the 40-man roster (he wasn't on the 40-man, right?) suggests that MAYBE they'll play him.  But considering the reluctance Piniella has had to use any of his recent callups (Fox, Moore, Cedeno, Murton), I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't see him come up and sit on the bench.

by SouthernCub on Aug 6, 2007 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I would hope so
because he has for the most part been a train wreck defensively in the outfield.
For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

by HoffPowahhh on Aug 6, 2007 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

I think he is up here...
for his offense and speed--not for his defense.

Right now, the Cubs need some offense big time, and hopefully he will provide a spark while Soriano is out.

I would imagine Murton will get some time in LF as well.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

by CubFanSince1970 on Aug 6, 2007 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

why not Pie??
Interesting to hear cub rationale for this...Pie is better fielder, and has hit a ton in minors...sounds like they're gonna play what they got (Murton, Jones, Floyd and Pagan w./ DeRosa in OF) and see if that's not enough.

I don't think it is, not to get anywhere in postseason surely...they need another power bat most of all.

by writerinwrigley on Aug 6, 2007 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

Because Patterson...
has primarily hit leadoff all season, batting .300 in the No. 1 spot in the order with a .365 on-base percentage. Meanwhile, Pie couldn't hit with the big team. Give Pie some more time to develop.

Hold your horses!
No official announcement has been made of a recall. Only the sentence "Rich Hill starts for Chicago, while top prospect Eric Patterson is expected to be recalled to replace an injured Alfonso Soriano.", which appears on the front page of the website and nowhere else, says that Patterson is being recalled.

Let's wait until this move is actually made before we rip it apart.

Al
According to the Trib EPatt's getting called up.  Do we still have to wait now?

Carrie Muskat
is reporting it.  Hard to get more official than that.

The problem is that they have to make room on the 40 man.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 6, 2007 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I saw the link...
... about five minutes after I posted that.

I imagine Henry Blanco is headed to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man.

According to the Tribune
Floyd will play in left with a Pagan/Murton platoon in right.  I assume Jones will be in center.  I guess this means Patterson probably won't play much because I would assume DeRo and Fontenot would play second.  I'm confused.

I wouldn't be shocked...
Piniella has developed a trend of not playing his callups much lately.  The logic does make some sense: if Piniella felt that Patterson should have been playing over Murton/Pagan/Fontenot, he'd have already been up here.  So (assuming the Trib knows what they're talking about, which is no guarantee) Patterson just comes up to get a cup of coffee in the bigs, and Piniella sticks with the guys he already had in the bigs as his regulars.

by SouthernCub on Aug 6, 2007 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

They almost
could platoon all three spots:

Jones/Pagan in center
Floyd/Derosa in right
Patterson/Murton in left.

That would make for a pretty soft outfield against lefties, but I suppose the outfield has been pretty soft against lefties anyways.

by jazzypete on Aug 6, 2007 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Just for the record
Patterson's not on the 40 man.  Someone is going to have to go, or Henry Blanco could be put on the 60 day DL, I guess.

I might just release Neal Cotts.

Now that Patterson has been called up, almost the entire 40-man roster has seen action in the majors this season.

The only ones who haven't are:

Brian Dopirak
Jeff Samardzija
Buck Coats
Juan Mateo (who is healthy now, but was hurt most of the season).

This doesn't count Mark Prior and Roberto Novoa, who have been on the 60-Day DL all season.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 6, 2007 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

40 man...
Cotts won't get released.  That would be kinda' silly, don't you think?

They can just move Blanco to the 60 day DL, being that he has already been on the 15 day DL for more than 60 days.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 6, 2007 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I know
I just want to release Cotts anyway.  :-)

by Josh Timmers on Aug 6, 2007 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Official Move...
Eric Patterson up, Soriano to 15 day DL, Dopirak DFA'd, Miller waived. (link)

by big_lowitzki on Aug 6, 2007 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I saw Eric a good bit last year in AA
along with Theriot, Rocky Cherry and some others.

Eric seemed like a good kid. Playing infield well and having good cuts if not always good "at bats."

It'll be fun to see him at the bigs after seeing him in the small parks around here.
