Its Official: Patterson Up, Miller Gone, Dopirak DFA'd

Here you go:

The Cubs purchased the contract of Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa and placed Alfonso Soriano on the disabled list Monday.

The Cubs also designated infielder Brian Dopirak, currently at Class A Daytona, for assignment. In addition, pitcher Wade Miller has been placed on waivers to grant his unconditional release.

Wade Miller is gone!!!!!  Oh how we will miss you.

Dopirak
may pass through waivers.

He has been horrible of late

Now that he is back, play Matt Murton!!

Define "of late"
He's batted .312 with a .375 OBP and six home runs since July 1.  That's pretty good.

Now from between the start of the 2005 season and July 1, yeah, that's been horrible.  He's also been injured.

This actually surprises me as Dopirak has really been ripping the cover off the ball for the last six weeks.  But he's only gone up one level since 2004 and I don't think he really has a future in the organization.

I bet someone claims him though and takes a chance he can return to his 2004 form.  He's most likely gone.

Dopirak and Harvey
...are among many "power bat'' draftees from Cubs who have not developed!!

I can't recall the last time they brought a power hitter up through the system....everyone points to Gracie but he was NOT a power hitter by any means given his position.

I hope we find one one day need it more than ever!!

Not sure we've had one come up...
in my lifetime.  DuBois was supposed to be that guy, but didn't pan out.  I guess Patterson has some pop, but he's no longer with the team, and he's not hitting for power this year, and speed is his real calling card.

Perhaps Pie will be that guy (he's starting to develop power now that he's catching up in maturity to the rest of the guys in his level), but it's true that it's been a LONG time since the Cubs have developed a power hitter.

It's been a long time
since the Cubs have developed any hitter.

You guys are forgetting
He Sop Choi.  Man that guy could mash.  Too bad it was the ground with his head instead of the baseball.

Also
Don't forget about Rafael Palmerio.  Another fine example of the pure, sweet swinging power bats to come up through our system.

My favorite was Kevin Roberson
Harry Carey was so excited about him when he came up.  Alas.

Ah yes
Roberson certainly built like a masher.  Didn't quite work out over here.  Didn't he go to Japan and play some there?

proves how fleeting baseball "prospects"
Are...Dopirak was the second coming of Lou Gehrig just a few years ago.

Prospects are just that....prospects..

Moment of silence.

Thanks

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

Certain teams
do an excellent job of drafting and developing prospects.  The Braves come to mind.  Certain teams don't.

The Twins, too
Many teams are excellent developers of talent because they have outstanding minor league management. Fleita needs to be let go, IMO. He does a horrible job of managing the minors and making sure players develop. I think he waits too long at times to move on players (move them up) and they end up injured and less valuable to the team. Wilken will improve things with his eye for talent, but I am still concerned the the way prospects move through the minors. Pie is the Cubs' best prospect, but he still has TONS of work to do on his swing before he plays in the big leagues. Reyes really put that into perspective. Once Pie shortens his swing to look more like Reyes, he will be playing every day in CF.

On a side note, what happened to Colvin? Is he seriously hurt?

Raffy not a HR hitter at first
...but developed into one with help from the juice...great hitter, obviously, and a bad trade but had to be made when he fooled around with Ryno's then-wife.

This year's team is first in a while that has promoted some prospects who have stuck and contributed, notably Marmol, Fontenot and most of all Theriot (after long look-see last Sept.)...hope it continues with Soto and others they really only have 2 positions to fill for future: RF and C. (I am presuming Pie will be set in CF next year).
