Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Phil Rogers was right

...in his col about the Cards

Star-divide

He has consistently written that St. Louis was a hosue of cards and the team only got back into NL Central because of Cub/Brewer follies and starting pitching that overperformed for a period of time and would revert to mediocre form.

It sure looks like he's right now that Redbirds are riding a nice losing streak right out of the race...so many times writers get taken to task for being "wrong'' and Rogers has had his mis-reads on players, siutations many times, but this one looks spot on.

Of course, having grown up in Cub-Card territory in so. Illinois I still fear the Cards whenever we play them they will be tough this weekend no matter what, maybe even tougher now they are due for a slight "upturn'' from their woes...but with two better teams solidly in front of them by 4-5 games Cards have only the longest of shots to return to the postseason now.

I still think LaRussa, Duncan & Co. did a helluva job to get as much as they did out of this year's team...the late addition of Ankiel provided a tremendous boost, but their core--Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds--performed even worse than ours of A-Ram, Lee and Soriano, and their pitching was far worse esp. in the first half.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

? Rogers Was Right?
Well even a blind squirrel can find a nut, but the problem that the Cards have had is that the team's position players have been decimated by injury.   They collapsed when they lost Encarciaon.   Right now they have four position players on the DL who were all expected to be important contributors -- Encarcion, Kennedy, Duncan and Rolen.  And Preston Wilson.

They collapsed, but it wasn't just the pitching.  And  I wouldn't count them out yet.   They do play very well at home and could close much of the ground this weekend.

punked by the Ankiel HGH story
It seems to me that their current losing streak has happened since that Rick Ankiel and HGH story broke last week. It might be sheer coincidence, but it seemed to drain the Cards mojo.
I was saying Boo-urns.

Cubs and Cards....
and for that matter, Cubs and White Sox, are just like any big rivalry.  Red Sox/Yankees, Bears/Packers, North Carolina/Duke, Ohio State/Michigan, etc.  Throw the records out the window because they are meaningless.  The games will be hard fought and if there is a clearly superior team in any such rivalry, the inferior team will oftentimes knock them off.
