Are they really this stupid?

**WARNING WARNING WARNING POSSIBLE "NEGATIVE" STORY REGARDING CUBS...READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070918cubsbrite,1,3877212.story?coll =cs-cubs-headlines

"According to sources, the Cubs told CSN not to show Cuban or even to talk about his presence at the park during the telecast."

I was starting to think that maybe this outfit was going to start being run like an actual big-market franchise and then these kinds of stories come out.

What is the problem if Cuban is at the park?

It's got nothing to do with "stupid".
Do you even know WHY Cuban was in the bleachers the other night, figuring he'd get bigtime PR out of it?

It had nothing to do with the Cubs. It had everything to do with trying to get him PR for his upcoming appearance on "Dancing With The Stars". Is it any wonder that the Cubs and CSN didn't want to give him this face time?

They did the right thing. I swear, if the Cubs DO win this thing, you'll find a way to bitch and moan about that, too.

i dont know
if they "did the right thing."  it was newsworthy that he was there, so it showed somewhat of a lack of journalistic integrity to just blatantly ignore something newsworthy that fans would be interested in.  they didnt have to make some sort of espn/abc production out of it, but it wouldnt have hurt to tell cub fans that a prospective owner was sitting in the bleachers.

I tend to agree with this assessment
The problem is does Comcast/WGN show other celebrities in the stands (i.e. last night) because it compliments their entertainment strategy or inventory? No it is considered part of selling of the experience that celebs are part of the whole scene. Now it appears many marketing types are quite integrated and complex using appearances to enhance other entertainment properties et cetera. But to use that as a reason to censure is sublime or capricious especially since it is not in a vacuum.

Cuban is by all published accounts a bidder for the club. He is a 'populist' owner from another sport and his appearance by the fact that the SunTimes covered it is or was newsworthy.

I am tired of how marketing interests have invaded newsworthiness....Worse is the mention that Cuban's fate is determined because he is persona non grata from the 75% ownership.

Finally [dancing] that might be a reason someone gave for Comcast not to mention it, (by the way two things that undercut this reasoning; one, the demographics of Comcast I predict does not match up with Dancing demographics both in ad profile and viewership, two what if Floyd hit his HR in his vicinity then what...what would Comcast do then?) but I don't buy it....the publicity value of Cuban on the Dancing at Wrigley which was a local broadcast game is at best negligible, (if it were tonight when ESPN is broadcasting then you can try to make the case), I chalk it up attempting not to promote Cuban as a potential legitimate suitor and teeth gnashing.... and that is my educated opinion

Let me clarify this....
You're saying some higher-up from the Cubs finds out Cuban is at the game.  He/she says to him/herself "I don't want that Cuban to get any free publicity for that "Dancing With The Stars" show" and then makes the effort to call Comcast and tells them not to show Cuban or have the announcers mention Cuban?

And you're serious about this?

Wow, they are even dumber than I thought.

by Peoria Matt on Sep 20, 2007 5:55 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If you need clarification......
....then the answer to your original question is yes, you are that stupid.

Seriously, who gives a shit about this? I could not care less if Cuban was in stands or at Hi Tops. B...F....D. Cuban at a game is news, and showing him on TV for an obvious publicity stunt wholly unrelated to baseball is something you're going to gripe about????

If Cuban's people weren't stupid, like you, they would have waited one entire night and had him there for last night's ESPN broadcast instead. ESPN, part of the big, happy ABC family, could have shown him all night until most of us puked and you made a mess in your shorts. I'm guessing it would be a close call as to which would happen first.

I thought he asked
if "they" were this stupid.

Absolutely agree though, that this is very unimportant compared to what we are really looking at here in September.

Beer Cub.....
Reading is a skill: "Are they really this stupid?" was the title.  Now in that sense "they" does not mean me, it means the Cubs.  Was that too fast for you?

And "who gives a shit about this"?  Exactly my point.

Why would anyone with the Cubs give a shit if Cuban is at the game?  And who gives a shit if "Dancing With The Stars" gets mentioned?  Because as we all know, the celebs that suck the "Seventh Inning Stretch" teet are all there for the love of the game, not to promote anything.  But I guess that's ok because the Cubs arranged the appearance.

And I'm guessing Al the reason you haven't told BeerCub to tone it down is because you agree with him.

Personally, I could care less...
...whether they show him or not. I'd rather CSN focus on the playoff-contending baseball team on the field.

Ah, that's cool. I suppose we shouldn't complain about celebrities starting to turn up at games -- just another sign that the Cubs are in contention, I guess.

True yet
I have no more interest in seeing John "I root for both sides of town" Cusak and Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn who happened to be in a movie together that was coming out soon (or maybe it was already out).

Fans are fans and why the hell does it matter if he was on camera?  We ought not get sidetracked from the issue at hand...whether this team can push through this month and take us to the next level of this journey.

Cusack
I lost respect for Cusack during the '03 playoffs when he was sitting in the bleachers at the start of the game, getting TV coverage and doing interviews; as the game progressed, he was then shown sitting in a luxury box.  It was shades of Fred Dalton Thompson and his red pickup truck.

Politics
I hope you're being facetious but if not, Seriously?!? I'm not discussing politics, just two actors/politicians who used the equivalent of props to appear to be something they're not.  Considering Cusack is a die-hard liberal and Thompson the opposite, I would have thought that was crystal clear.  However, to avoid any problems in the future, I'll never mention a public official or candidate for any public office ever again, regardless of the context.

back to the original question
Newsworthy coverage and manipulation or censureship. Bottom line, let us put to rest the idea that Cuban was here to make a publicity appearance to promote some show on another network that does not match with the demographics of Chicago cable only baseball viewers.

So why would the Tribune/WGN/Cubs management specifically tell the producers and directors and announcers not to mention Cuban's presence in the park? It was reported that they decided to do that while ironically showing Cusak the following night among other celebs through the year?

Information control to which they could control it. You can speculate as to why, or to its merits or effectiveness but someone thought it was the thing to do.

Have you ever
watched Dancing With The Stars? That is exactly why he was there last night. This was the perfect footage for their show. If he was there just as a perspective owner why would he have brought his new dance partner? I will be very surprised if I don't see footage from the game last night one of the three nights the show is on next week.

The Cubs were absolutely correct
in not allowing any mention of Cuban. If they did that who knows where it could lead. Celebrities singing during the 7th inning stretch and promoting everything under the sun. The thought is frightening.

You know, i took a completely different
approach to this.  When I heard that they wouldn't show Cuban, my first thought was that it was because there were guys in the clubhouse watching.  Then these guys would go and let the people in the dugout know he was there, which could possibly be an unwanted distraction.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

If you're tired about...
celebrities showing up at Wrigley to promote their acts, wait until the playoffs come to Chicago. I bet TBS will have the cast from "My Boys" (a comedy about a female Chicago sports writer) sitting in front row, and Fox will have Kelsey Grammer there along with all the stars from their upcoming shows. They might even superimpose Homer Simpson in the bleachers, sitting next to Al. :-)
