Scorecard Scans

I had promised during the last homestand to post scans of my scorecards -- unfortunately, this week I got too busy and wasn't able to do it till today.

Didn't think you'd want to see the card from Tuesday's loss, but here are the cards from Monday and Wednesday's big wins.

Scorecard from Cubs' 7-6 win over the Reds on Monday

Scorecard from Cubs' 3-2 win over the Reds on Wednesday

Thanks Al!
Hey Al... this is really cool.  Thanks for posting these.

Have you ever heard of Project Scoresheet?  I have recently been re-introduced to this method and I love it.

You can read more about it here

Project Scoresheet...
... was what eventually morphed into Retrosheet. The avowed aim of Project Scoresheet was to get scoring for every game played in the public domain, since MLB was at the time (in the '80s) so reticent to get its stats out there and available. That idea seems quaint now, although MLB is pretty secretive about a lot of things now anyway.

Their system is pretty detailed and I did look at it when I first heard about P.S. in the '80s. Too detailed for me to do at a game, though, I think.

Scorecards
Thanks for posting Al.  As someone who keeps score at most games, I am always curious to see others' approaches.  Everyone seems to have a few individual nuances in the way they tell the story of a game.

On a somewhat related note, I find the Cubs' scorecards to be one of the better forms that I have used, though I wish they would go to a two page format that might allow slots for more than two relief pitchers and additional extra innings.  The Pirates have some of the worst scorecards (or at least they did).  Their scorecards are printed on high glossy card stock that makes the use of a pencil virtually impossible. I've transitioned to pen (Cubbie blue) in any event, which makes the occasional scoring change or public address error especially aggrevating....

by Born Again Cubs Fan on Sep 20, 2007 4:20 PM CDT   0 recs

The Cubs had room...
... for more than two pitchers before July 2005. When Greg Maddux was going for his 3000th strikeout, they took out the fourth and fifth line and made a Maddux countdown. When they took the countdown out, they didn't put the additional lines back.

Secret: I use a white-out strip to white out the "Rosters and team records" line at the bottom if I need more room. I can usually get five relievers in before I have to go to the "notes" column.

My scorecard
Like bornagain said, everyone has their ways of scoreing.  Here is my scorecard from Wednesday.  Note:  I make up my own scorecard.  It is a 2 page format with a bit more space and a bit bigger fonts (these 50 year old eyes aren't what they used to be!)

Like I said, I make up my own scorecard, so I thought I would show you what the front and back of my current scorecard looks like...

Ed Wade
I post this here because I don't think it's worth a diary--although I'm sure someone will diary this soon, it won't be me.

The Astros just hired Ed Wade as their GM.  The same Ed Wade who was the GM for eight years in Philadelphia and won nothing.

This is very good news for the Cubs.

Scorecards in DC
At RFK, you better bring your own scorecards because the only way to get one there is plunking down the $5 bucks for a program.  I don't know if this happens elsewhere, but I gotta believe this is one of the worst deals in baseball.
Dang...I just want something to root for in September

by GamePenguin on Sep 20, 2007 8:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Seen worse
At Yankee Stadium, it was $7 for a program, which was the only way to get a scorecard.  At Turner Field, the options were a $10 program or a $1 single  flimsy sheet of paper.  I went with the $1 option and had to worry the whole time about putting a hole in it.

Oddly enough, in both stadiums, I was the only one around keeping score.

Does anyone know...

Actually ...
Having just returned from Philies-Nats, I can say that there is an actual scorecard available for the last series at RFK.

It's a step in the right direction.

Actually, because I go to so many ballparks I print off a standard form - except at Wrigley.  There are lots of good ones here:

scorecard
Hi Al,

When we were kids the opposing teams used to walk up a staircase that was open under the grandstand.  It had a chain link fence but you would stand down under the stands on the right field side and see all the players walking up the stairs to the clubhouse.  The top of the fence was not that tall and we would take our scorecard and pen and hold it up at the top of the fence....which did seem high to us as 10 year olds.  When the players would exit from batting practice we would stand there and the players would generally sing the scorecard.  At one time I had every team in the national league on their own separate score card.  Of course my mother threw them out.  Lord knows what they would be worth today.

Also had a scorecard signed by Pat Peiper on Pat Peiper day.  If we only knew then what we know now....

regards,
5412

by 5412 on Sep 20, 2007 8:35 PM CDT   0 recs

Wow, that would be a cool collection.
I remember walking by that staircase, too. Occasionally the players would sit there and shoot the breeze with fans during rain delays.

Barretts not doing well.  I used to hate the barrett trade - now I love the trade.  Addition by subtraction and we have, in my opinion, an awesome catching duo in Kendall and Soto.

Anybody think Soto could be the next coming of Pudge?  He even looks like him.

Final. 1.5 games up. I think i'm smelling a braves series win, takin three out of four. Which would put a big hit on their playoff hopes.

Love it!
Brewers lose one of their games in hand...we're 1 1/2 up!  Smoltz and Hudson still to come this weekend! We  need to take care of business against the mighty Bucos, and maybe, just maybe, open up a slightly bigger, less stressful division lead.
It was the Alex Gonzalez error that killed us!

Sweet. Suds are one game
down in the loss column and face Hudson and Smoltz the next two days. Of course it would help tighten their collars IF the Cubs can take care of business at the same time that the Suds have to face those guys. GO CUBS!! Now is the time to perform to expectations and take care of business at home.

Truly, HOLY COW
MLB has quickly slapped together a post-season spot (with the annoying Dane Cook) featuring...
(wait for it)

The Cubs.  I flipped over from Braves/Brew and saw this spot during a break in Nats/Phils.

"These aren't those Cubs..." says the copy..

Guess they figured the spots featuring the Marlins were....dated.

"Go Cubs Go"
I would just like to mention that Mr. Steve Goodman (the author of "Go Cubs Go") died this day in 1984... September 20, 1984.

Link to life story

Today of all days I decided to research that song and its author... and I like to think that deciding to research this on 9/20 is a good omen. I've loved this song for a very long time, why did I decide to look into it today of all days??

GO! CUBS! GO!

Rest in peace, Mister Goodman. Hopefully you have some way of knowing the joy your song brings to countless Cubs fans everywhere.

by Ryno72 on Sep 20, 2007 10:09 PM CDT   0 recs

i am replying to myself but...
On September 20, 1984, Goodman died at University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, Washington, his life finally taken by the leukemia from which he had anointed himself with the tongue-in-cheek nickname "Cool Hand Leuk" (others nicknames included "Chicago Shorty" and "The Little Prince"). He was only 36. Eleven days later, the Chicago Cubs played their first post-season game since 1945; Goodman had been asked to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before it; Jimmy Buffett filled in, and dedicated the song to Goodman. Some of Goodman's ashes were scattered at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

by Ryno72 on Sep 20, 2007 10:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Go Cubs Go
is a horrible song.  Steve Goodman wrote many really wonderful songs.  Go Cubs Go is not one of them.  It's actually worse than Hey Hey Holy Mackeral.  And that's saying something.

it's the anniversary of the day the guy died.

and people scream that song at wrigley after a cubs victory.

by Ryno72 on Sep 20, 2007 11:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I had no idea...
...that he had written "City of New Orleans."  That song is awesome.

This brings the total of Goodman songs I know to...five, I think.  (Last Request, Go Cubs Go, Lincoln Park Pirates, and You Never Even Call Me By My Name.)

I think I just might have to go find more.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

by Cool Hand on Sep 21, 2007 7:56 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You should get...
... Clay Eals' book "Facing The Music, an amazing biography of Goodman which contains a CD with many songs on it.

I've got this book but confess I haven't had time to read it. I will once the season is over.

Unbelievable. I hate Zach Duke. Cub killer. We are a collective 1 - 4 this season against the three starters this weekend. The lone win was the 1 - 0 Marquis win over Gorzellany. Why? Just tell me why.

by louslovechild on Sep 20, 2007 11:11 PM CDT   0 recs

Are the Cubs champions...
or not? Let's not worry about who we are playing, or who is pitching against us, let them worry about the prospect of playing us and our pitching staff.

Champions are afraid of no one, they strike fear in the opposition. The Pirates, Marlins, and Reds better be ready because the powerfuil Cubs are coming - be afraid, be very afraid!!!

Cubs vs. Lefties
Al,

this is more appropriate for tonight's game thread, but do you or anyone else know the team's record vs. lefties post-Monroe pick up?

I always thought that our vs. lefty record was an anomaly considering we have so many good right handed hitters. Like our 1 run game record, I figure it would even out over the course of the season but does anyone know how we stand since we picked up Craig "the lefty-masher" Monroe? ;)

by The Ryno and I Know on Sep 21, 2007 8:40 AM CDT   0 recs

Not sure about the vs. LHP record...
... but the overall team record since Monroe played his first game with the team on August 24 is 15-12.
