Giants say goodbye to Bonds; Bonds bitter

Barry Bonds just posted this journal entry in which he says the Giants told him yesterday he isn't coming back next year.  He is upset that they didn't tell him sooner so this year could be a "Barry farewell" tour.  He plans to continue playing elsewhere.

Please, dear Lord, let the Cubs owners, whoever they may be, NOT sign Bonds.

I'm curious
to see how that drama unfolds.  He was a free agent last season and it seems the Giants WAY outbid the market.  It would have made much more sense for him to DH somewhere this season but the piss-poor Giants management HAD to have him break the record in SF.  Guess that worked out, but the 16mil they gave him didn't really buy a winning team.  That org is in shambles.

If I were a betting man, I'd say he's done.  If last winter's non-bidding war is any indication, Bonds won't get more than $9 or $10 million and I'm guessing his ego is too big to sign a contract for that amount of money.  I won't be surprised if he insists on a 2 year contract either.  Man I hate that guy.

It was a business decision ..
.. never a baseball one.

Over last winter, the Giants knew they were going to stink out McCovey Cove and that there were only so many of those kayakers they could entice into the Bay, but Barroid was a draw to keep the seats filled and the payroll supported. That's all it ever was about.

The timing of the "announcement" (which was a foregone conclusion months ago) was another club business decision. Since the Giants fans for "some reason" stopped filling the seats since Aaron's record was eclipsed by Barroid, the Giants suits knew how to fill those stadium seats one last time for the teams' last home stand. Cut that pretender loose and let it sink into the Giants' fans' minds - their idol is about to tumble off his drugstore pedestal, so they'd better go see him NOW, in a last dance they won't want to miss.

Very cagey move. The cash registers will whine at the park over the next few days.

I note that the Giants end their season in Los Angeles where absolutely NO love is lost for Barroid. Hizzoner Antonio R. Villaraigosa had better get ready to deploy the National Guard around Dodger Stadium. It's not going to be pretty.

Agreed
Makes sense if Oakland is willing to accept the baggage he brings.  They have a history of bringing in over the hill sluggers (with their own baggage for sure) to fill the DH spot, and Bonds would be a good one.  He could play more games than he did this year since he won't be in the field.  He's probably been off the sauce long enough that he won't have any related injuries, Oakland needs the offense etc etc.......

Unlikely
Cust has won the A's DH job outright, and he's under club control for cheap for another 3 or 4 years.

I'd say Minnesota would be a more likely destination, he's exactly what they need (player wise, probably not personality wise).  Either that or I could see Texas or Baltimore signing him for cheap.  Texas was the "mystery team" last season who was offering him a contract.

Look at this AP story...
... which appeared on Yahoo, and this in particular:
Bonds broke Hank Aaron's record with his 756th home run on Aug. 7. But that has been one of the few highlights this season as the Giants are assured of their first last-place finish since 1985.

Wrong! The Giants finished last (fourth in the NL West, which then had only four teams) in 1995 and 1996, under Dusty Baker.

Sloppy work by the AP writer.

Look for a late signing because the....
...grand jury saga needs to play out first (barroid's ego will not let him sign a contract with an indictment out for the club).

As for me, "Bye, bye barroid, don't let the needle stick you in the butt on your way out."

Does Soriano's defense at 2B really cost more runs than in LF? He makes a lot fewer errors in LF since misplays and mental mistakes aren't figured into the stats, but I have to imagine that his mistakes are more physical at 2B. Any thoughts? Is there a statistic on this?
