Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Friday 9/21, 1:20 CT

The Cubs, as you know, picked up a half game in the standings last night while resting at home when the Braves beat the Brewers 3-1. Now, Milwaukee must face Tim Hudson and John Smoltz today and tomorrow, while the Cubs are playing a team that they should be beating, but haven't so far this year (5-7 vs. Pittsburgh).

The time for talk is over. Just win.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Paul Maholm
 P. Maholm
Pirates
12-8 W-L 10-15
4.07 ERA 4.76
102 SO 102
71 BB 49
22 HR 20
vs. Pit -- vs. Cubs
Jason Marquis threw his best game of the year against the Pirates on May 9 at Wrigley Field -- a three-hit shutout. He's 8-3, 4.01 in 16 starts at home this season, and the Cubs are 8-2 in his starts (not his record, the club record in games he's started, including one road game I attended) since I acquired my Marquis jersey, which I'll be wearing again today.

None of the Pirates hits him particularly well except for Jason Bay, who is .382/.450/.912 (13-for-34, 4 doubles, a triple, 4 HR).

Paul Maholm got pounded by the Astros in his last start on September 16, allowing ten earned runs in 2.2 innings. Maybe we could have the Cubs dress up in Astros uniforms; they have never beaten Maholm. He's 4-0 lifetime vs. the Cubs, although with a 4.94 ERA. Aramis Ramirez (4-for-11, a HR) and Alfonso Soriano (3-for-8, a HR) are the only Cubs who have had any decent success against Maholm.

It's going to be summerlike today:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. South southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph.
Finally, have a little fun with Lou!

Today's game is cable-only in the Pittsburgh and Chicago areas; it's also on the EI list, and at today's Mediacenter link.

MLB.com Gameday (2007 version)

MLB.com Gameday (2006 version)

MLB.com Gameday for the Brewers/Braves game (6:05 CT start, TV on ESPN - I'll put this link in today's recap later this afternoon as well)

Discuss amongst yourselves.

GO CUBS GO!!!!
Can't wait until game time!
Walking by the ballpark on my way to work this morning there was already a large line waiting to get tickets. Very much a playoff atmosphere and this is at 7 in the morning!
Hopefully the Cubbies play well tonight and Marquis has good command as well.

GO CUBS GO!!! Part II
Well... I'm on my way to Arizona for business for the next 7 days. I hope the Cubs are sitting nicely atop the division when I return!

Will chime in from the road, when I have the chance.

Good times
I hope we all have a good time no matter what. This is what being a cubs fan is all about. A hell of a lot better then the last 3 years.

I have the feel the Cubs have the momentum and good things will happen this weekend.

6-01-2007 the Cubs begin to rise. They will never look back.

The Braves
rookie pitcher did a favor for us last night. This weekend is a key to the season. We take care of business and the good Braves pitchers take care of their business and we'll be in good shape!

Crappy pitchers
I was curious about how many bad pitchers the Brewers have been facing lately, so I looked it up. It's pretty bad (follow the link if you want your eyes to bleed). Luckily, the Cubs somehow gained 2 games over that stretch. Good job, crappy rookie pitchers!!!
It's nice to see random no-name pitchers help the Cubs after kicking the snot out of us the last 2-3 years. ;)

I'm not sure of its legality
(so I may or may not have used it), but SopCast streams MLB games for every game played. It can do the same for football and basketball(when it comes back) too.

Legality aside, I'm wondering whether any spyware/adware comes along with the software you must download to view the games.

Assuming you've used SopCast, have you had any problems?

Malware
I haven't noticed any.  I downloaded and installed it, but I only used it once.  I had a bad feeling about it (not the legality, although there was that, but more because I thought I might be compromising my computer).  I'm a developer, so I notice performance issues pretty quickly.  I also check running processes on my machine regularly and have not seen anything out of the ordinary.

Nothing's been wrong at my end.
However, you probably know a ton more about computers than I do and spot problems faster. But I've been using it for about a year and a half, and it works great. It does have ~5 minute delay between real time and stream, though

Granted, I have Norton and ad-aware, and run spybot checks every other week just to make sure.

Here's the schedule for all the games, and their respective channels that you can use if you have it. If it's not legal, then I wouldn't know anything about it though. My friend told me about it, whom I can't really remember

SopCast
I've also installed it and have not noticed any glaring problems from spyware, though it's difficult to tell where junk comes from nowadays.  I've only used it once for the Cubs (to watch the end of a game) as I primarily use it for the Bears since I don't live in Chicago and I can't afford NFL Gameday ticket.

It is a grey area:  if a normal person has to pay to receive the service, then getting it "free" on SopCast is like stealing.  I don't mind using Gameday for baseball games, but football has more action and players involved on each play.

I hope the NFL can shake off its alliance with DirecTV and make games available over the net.  It's going to be awhile before that happens.  MLB was never captive to a single satellite provider.

re: SopCast
Yeah, like so many questionable things online, it is a grey area.

I mean, I pay to receive Comcast cable, in part to be able watch many/most Cubs games. But I can't access my cable box here at work, so am I really stealing to watch the games via SopCast? Technically, I've paid to watch the game on TV and, presumably, MLB will receive some of that revenue from Comcast. So they're not losing revenue if I watch the game on SopCast.

I'm probably committing some glaring ethical mistake here, though...

Interesting point....
You did pay Comcast to watch the game so you should be able to watch the game.  From an ethical standpoint, you are right.  From a legal standpoint, Sopcast hasn't purchased the rights to broadcast the game.  In essance, you are not stealing from Comcast, Sopcast is stealing from Comcast.

How's that for some sophistry?

re: Interesting point....
Well, that makes me feel better. Let Comcast worry about it! :-)

Which inspires me to ask: Why doesn't Comcast offer its subscribers Internet access to certain channels/programs? (Uh, namely, baseball games!) I'm guessing a lot of us would take advantage of this service. And I'd even consider paying a reasonable extra amount on my cable bill to be able to access Cubs game via the Web.

Of course, they'd probably want to charge an arm and leg for such a service...

Sopcast
I've used it a million times to watch english football (come on you Arsenal!), but never for MLB. This afternoon, I think I'll try Sopcast to watch the game. It's gotta be better than Gamecast, though Gamecast is faster than the mlb internet radio feed.

It's not DirecTV
that's keeping Sunday Ticket off of cable (although I'm sure they're ecstatic about it) but rather Fox and CBS.  It's the same issue that we have with blackouts of Saturday afternoon Fox baseball games of the week--the two networks want you to be watching their local broadcasts on their local channels with their local advertisers.

The networks didn't say anything when Sunday Ticket started on BUD systems and when it migrated to DirecTV because both were really small at the time and it wasn't worth arguing over.  But now that DirecTV has become big, it's a major headache for them.  DirecTV gets grandfathered in, but all the networks have said that the rights payments that they're willing to shell out for the NFL would go down substantially if Sunday Ticket were available on cable systems.  (It's another reason why ST is so freakin' expensive.  They're trying to keep the number of subscribers down.)

So far from the NFL wanting to "shake off" it's partnership with DirecTV, it's the NFL that's keeping it going.  The NFL isn't "captive" to DirecTV, it's trying to please the broadcast networks.

If we win series...
...things ought to begin to resolve.  Right now, with Atlanta doing us a huge favor by beating Milwaukee last night (and the irony of a former Milwaukee team beating the current one is not lost on me!) we are a very important game up in the loss column.

Can the Brewers win two more games over the ever-diminishing remainder of the season than the Cubs?  That is now the question.  And their climb gets steeper every time out.

For the first time in this anxiety-wracked season, I'm beginning to truly believe.  Time is now on our side.

Baseball is always about the odds and anomolies
Cubs odds of taking 2 of 3 over the next three series against teams in last place or near the bottom (Cincinnati) over the course of the season is significant....Winning 6 of 9 and finishing 86-76 is a reasonable projection especially taken that over those 9 starts, 8 of them will be our front line pitchers where 2 of them have a .600 record where the club has won the games they have started. Those two pitchers will appear 4 times, thus one can state that the Cubs should expect a minimum of 3 wins from those 4 starts. Thus you are inquiring whether the Cubs can win 3 of 5 from the other three pitchers who have a .500 record. Based on the fact that the Cubs are playing sub.500 teams the odds are 70% plus that they should win 6 of 9.

Now the Brewers have a harder road to sow...they have to win 9 of ten to win outright and 8 of 10 to tie. They have to face two pitchers who have a combined .666 and .582 club winning percentage and they are facing those two on the road where the Brewers are sub .400. They then come home to face the Cardinals and then Padres, who will be putting forward Young & Maddux along with Tomko and Cassel. Brewers have the best home record,

But the odds of going 8 of 10 is now reduced to 25%, with each loss those odds reduce and the Cubs odds increase.

Now all that can be wiped away by the human factor on the field and why they play the games.

Baseball & odds
Exactly.  Milwaukee's window is slowly and inexorably closing.  If we play good ball at all they're going to need to run the table just to have a chance.

Like I said, I'm beginning to let myself believe.  And looking forward to some October baseball I can actually care about - other than the usual hoping that the Yankees get beat, that is.

it's only you, I, Al, and a handful of others who can note the irony. They are all so young here...it's like when our forefathers referred to the damn Gashouse Gang. Seemed like 100 years ago to us, then.

And if you told them the Braves were in Boston they'd probably think you were nuts.

Old folks' home...
Probably not a good idea to mention the Brooklyn Dodgers, K.C. (pre-Oakland) A's, Seattle Pilots (who later became the Brewers), NY (now SF) Giants, Washington Senators (who became the Twins), or any of the other baseball history.

And the old Negro Leagues - Ernie Banks playing for the K.C. Monarchs, for example...

Granted, much of that was before my time, still, it's one of the reasons I really do love baseball - it has an amazingly rich history.

Gray hair has some effects, I guess.  At least I still have hair to get gray!

And the amount I learned from my maternal grandfather (and my mother!) about baseball - they took me to my first game in Wrigley,, I think I was 6 at the time.  Or how my two nieces, both now  Chicagoans, are both huge Cub fans.

Or the story I shot a few years back about Bob Casey, the late Metrodome PA announcer - his son was running the low home cam right next to him during the game.

Baseball nostalgia and family connections - maybe subjects for an off-day diary all their own.

Things are beginning to look up
With the loss of the Brew Crew last night, we are back to the usual 1.5 game lead. Atlanta has been hot winning the last 4 and with smoltz and hudson on the mount the next 2 days, this could spell disaster for the brewers. If the cubbies, can pull 2 out of 3 this weekend, We should be sitting up 3 games by the time Tuesday rolls around. The Padres will playing for the division or the wildcard next weekend vs the Crew, the cards are starting to line up in our favor. All we got to do is win and do a little scoreboard watching.

Believe!!!

First game of the series most important
Cubs are 17-4 (3 ties) when they win the first game of a series and have won only 5 series when they lost the first game, (their 5th being Houston last week).

Winning this game gives them a 70% of winning the series...it basically then is the difference in the odds of the Cubs losing the next two. Winning this game will put added pressure on the Brewers tonight, where a loss would put them down 2 in the loss column (provided Cubs win) and 3 in the win column.

Just to let you all know; Cubs vs. LHP'ers this yr
Much as been made of the Cubs current record against left handed starters now at 16-22, that said the record at the end of August was 12-20, so they have picked up 2 games on the ratio, going 4-2 to date in September).

---Back at the end of May the Cubs were 5-9....meaning they have won 11 games and lost 13 from the time their season has turned around.
----Meaning if they had won one more game against a left handed starter it would be .500. Cubs will face three lefties this weekend one a bona fide top of the rotation pitcher in Gorz....I think the Cubs will take the Pirates lefties win the series 2 of 3 moving their lefty record to 18-23...or 13-14 since late May.
-----They then are scheduled to face Willis and Olsen where I suspect they will split with them and finish the regular season 19-24 and since June--14-15...I don't consider it a problem.

Now cutting deeper the problem could be that Murton has started to contribute a little more and getting a right handed CF'er might also be a help.

Monroe will make an impact this weekend
He has hit some screaming line drives, a dead pull hitter who will occassionally spray a line drive to right field. His defense is okay and in the small field at Wrigley not much of a liability.

Baseball has so much failure...that it is easy to diss on a player, that is why nine bat....or you have a bullpen.

a defensive liability.  In fact, I thought his defense was the only remotely useful thing about him.  I'd say Neifi is more valuable defensively than Monroe (who's basically a corner OF).

This lineup
is probably close to what we'll have all weekend with all LHP against us.  The only change I could see is kendall catching one or both of the remaining games.

Also, I think last night was the brewers best chance at getting a win vs. the braves...while I doubt they'll get swept I can't see them winning two of the next three.

Lou is playing the HOT HANDS
Besides Soriano's power this month...where he is getting the most possible AB's for this power hot hand...7 HR's and 1.001-OPS
----DeRosa; For the month 23/66 .348....932-OPS
-----Soto  for the month 11/24 .458 ....1.375 OPS!

putting Theriot down in the 8th spot ahead of a good hitting pitcher allows him to use his 'energy game' as Theriot has been fading in September, 13/70 .186 (.256-OBP)....I think we may see Theriot down at that spot for the remainder of the season or unless his game suddenly picks up.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

by Ivy Walls on Sep 21, 2007 10:52 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why Theriot so low?
Any reason The Riot is down in the 8 spot? An attempt by Lou to "reload" the lineup at the bottom and maybe let Soriano get some more RBIs while he's hot?

Whatever it is, I agree with Lou....in Lou I trust ("in Lou we do"? "By Pinella, we're propella-ed"?...nothing seems to have the old "In Dusty we Trusty" ring to it....)

by Chadnudj on Sep 21, 2007 10:53 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

perhaps
I like theriot at 8.  He seems to consistantly get good AB's and hopefully he can get onbase for either a sac bunt or to keep the 9 spot from leading off the next inning.   Plus if teams pitch around him to get to the 9 spot he won't strike out swinging at the bad pitches
The Astros just asked me to start their next game

by jds2 on Sep 21, 2007 10:59 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

see above and pay attention
Theriot has had a good year, wrestled SS away from Izturis, been the energy guy offensively but he is fading fast offensively. He is batting a mere .186 in September and an OBP .256....neither are top of the order stats.
----For all the support to move him to lead off in September he only batted .276 with a .315 OBP...far cry from July when he was hot and batted .348 and had a .437 OBP.

Theriot is a valuable player on a team, he gives more offensively than the stats can show, he forces the defense to react but he has to learn to get more hits to left and center field.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

Sorry I was not insinuating about reading this
board....but saying that Theriot's offensive statistics have been on a slide for some time. Heck he peaked at .290 in late August and now is batting .268...that is big slide....

Not directed at you per se, but this manager unlike the previous ones has stated unequivably that he makes decisions that will give his team the best chance to win. So when he drops a hitter from the #2 to the #8 it is a valid question to inquire, but the obvious is that Theriot has not performed as needed in the role.

DeRosa just came off a 10 for 10 streak against Cincinnati....that by itself would warrant a move by a manager to pull DeRosa up who is hot right now and get him more AB's....the same for Soto...he is exceedingly hot....and doing well behind the plate....ride that horse like a pony express rider....

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

With the Theriot slide
It makes sense that Lou would bump him down in the lineup. Today is a good day to do it, with Marquis hitting ninth. He is traditionally supposed to be a good-hitting pitcher although hasn't lived up to that this year. Still, with that reputation, hopefully he can at least get down a bunt, being that he is not Rich Hill.

by montanacubby on Sep 21, 2007 11:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

re: Sorry I was not insinuating about reading this
I think one of the main reasons Theriot's offensive slide has slid by the wayside is that he still does a lot of little things to help the Cubs win games. He's still solid on defense, steals bases, runs out slow rollers, etc.

And I know something Steve Stone remarks upon often is Theriot's batting average after the seventh inning. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it may take some of the edge off of his poorer overall numbers.

Wednesday night's game was a prime example of how Theriot seems to always be sparking those late-inning rallies we've come to know and love.

Hello, Soto!

by dat cubfan daver on Sep 21, 2007 11:43 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

granted...I can't access his hit/inning
But the big picture is this. Theriot like all hitters has weak spots and hot spots. FOX has a nice set of graphics and if you look at Theriot he has 23 hits to RF, 18 to center, 9 to left and 8 on the infield and 2 HR's He is hitting .340+ with pitches down the middle (.405 up and middle) and if you pitch him up and outside .320...

The league is beginning to figure him out, but make a mistake up and he hurts you. He is right on the league average for his position, higher  in RBI's by double and runs 77 league average is 18 and okay stealing a base.

He is a strong #8 hitter.

I keep on hearing how Monroe is a veteran presence with experience in hitting clutch HRs in the World Series.  So maybe Hendry would have.

too odds set to crossover sometime
The odds that the Cubs will win the World Series will happen as 0 for 99 is an aberration, yet the odds it will happen soon is low since the cubs are 0 for 99.

Which odds will the Cubs organization break. My feeling is that there are reasonable explanations. Between 1906 and 1945 the Cubs were the top NL team in the World Series, 06-07-08, 10, 18, 29, 32, 38 and 45 (9 times one winner). Then the game changed after the war.

First it was money and intergretion where the NY teams had the advantage. Then the draft and expansion. Cubs organization was piss poor through the 50's and rebounded with a good draft and minor league system in the 60s. They fell short in 69 and 71. Then the organization was soft again as FA began to change the game. In the 80s things started turning around when Green came and demanded a new attitude, Then again there was a snakebite in the playoffs and the Cubs were out for 10 years. Now in this decade the urgency returned with the talent.

My thread is that the Cubs need to develop talent in the system and spend money as a top market team.

Neither can the Cubs.  The National Association team started in 1871, and they weren't the Cubs.  They were a completely different team with the same name (White Stockings).

The Cubs only date back to 1876, the year of Custer's Last Stand.

Club stats since June'07; 58-44, against LHP starters; 11-13, and 21-10 in one run games.

I seriously think that Soriano is the...
...least-scouted All-Star in the majors. Teams keep pitching him fastballs on the first pitch and running on balls hit to him in the outfield. It baffles.

I don't understand the reasoning...
behind Monroe playing CF instead of Pie. The LHP vs LHB thing is a wash in this situation because neither one is going to give you any offense anyway, but Pie would have caught that ball.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 1:58 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Reasoning
The reasoning is that Monroe is a MUCH MUCH better hitter vs lefties than Pie this year.  Pie has shown no sign he has adapted to big league pitching yet.

by californiachicagoan on Sep 21, 2007 2:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Monroe is terrible vs anyone throwing a baseball.
It doesn't matter which arm they use.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not defensively...
Pie's speed, glove, and arm are far more valuable to this team right now than whatever your expecting out of Monroe's bat.

P.S. I hope your not expecting much.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Sep 21, 2007 2:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Um no.
Pie's bat is too much of a negative for any amount of defense to overcome.  That is why Lou has him in the late inning defensive sub role, and rightly so.
