Where does the Central REALLY stand?

This is the first time I've posted a diary so if I'm not following proper protocol let me know.

All the "experts" consistently talk about the NL Central being the worst division in baseball. I don't think it's true. The NL Central has represented the NL in the World Series 3 of the last 4 years(should have been all 4) and won one of those series.

Could it be the reason the NL Central winner never appears to be as dominant is due to the fact that there are 6 teams in the division?

Having more inter-division games means there are more games played that bare greater impact. Not to mention the fact that the weaker teams in the division have the ability to steal a few from the stronger teams.

Hopefully our guys can help to solidify my opinion.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

whats going on here?

i think this exact diary has been posted almost every other week for the last month

the NL Central is ATROCIOUS when compared to the other divisions, its not really even much of a question

take a look at the NL Central teams record vs other divisions... its pretty clear this division hasn't stacked up recently

and one of the main reasons is the large composition of small market teams (PIT, CIN, MIL) combined with atrocious GMs (HOU, PIT, CIN)

i agree
with you on that, the central has repped the NL in the world series the last 3 years, hows that bad?

I would have to agree
that the NL Central division is Comedy Central, as the experts like to call it.

If you look at the other divisions, you'll see that there's at least 3 teams that seriously contends for the division championship or the wild card. Look at the NL West - AZ, SD, CO, and for a while, LA. Look at the opposite end of the country in the NL East - you've got NY, Phila., and Atl. For a brief (and I do mean brief!) period, in the Comedy Central division, we had 3 teams contending for the division lead - CHC, Mil., and STL.

This division has generally been weak compared to the other divisions. Look at the stats of all the teams and you'll find that the NLC teams are either at the bottom or in the middle of the pack. Most teams from the other divisions are in the upper third. Now I could be wrong here, but that's how it appears to me.

One important thing to remember - once you get into the postseason, the regular season stats means squat. It's a brand new season. If they want to call the NLC the worst division in baseball during the regular season, then they need to call the NLC the strongest division in baseball during the postseason. How many other divisions can claim the honor of representing their division 4 years in a row? Not too many, I'd wager.

Hope this answers your question and then some.
