New Blog: World Soccer Digest for Soccer Fans!

Okay, people, listen up. (UPDATED)

I am going to ask you something nicely.  But you should know that this is not optional.  Ready?

PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT THE PLAYOFFS AS IF THE CUBS MAKING THE PLAYOFFS IS A DONE DEAL.  Seriously.  Do you know how you are tempting fate?  Do you?

Henceforth, please let all talk of the playoffs, if any, include the word "IF" or another modifier (i.e., "knock on wood") that indicates you realize there is every chance in the world that the Cubs might not make it.

Star-divide

And then maybe, just maybe, the baseball gods will smile upon us long-suffering fans and bestow upon us what we have longed for . . . .well, for a really long time.

Update [2007-9-25 19:56:51 by dfrancon]: It is the bottom of the second inning in the first game of the Marlins series. The bases are loaded with one out and one run in, on a series of tiny little hits dropping in between the infield and the outfield. I want all of you who ridiculed me to apologize. RRR.

Update [2007-9-25 19:59:16 by dfrancon]: Now it's 4-0 Marlins and I really, really want you to apologize.

The only reason
People should use qualifiers is because it's accurate. The division race is not yet over.

It has nothing to do with "tempting fate" or any such supersition.

It's simply the truth. The division race is not yet over.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 24, 2007 11:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not yet over, true.
Still, we're much better off where we are (3 games up) than where Milwaukee is right now.  We need to play good ball, they need to be nearly perfect.

I'll gladly take where we are, and I suspect any Brewers fan - or player, for that matter - would gladly trade places.

The Cubs control their own fate.  Can't ask for a better position than that.

If this year has taught us anything
it's that Lou has refused to allow this team to play the victim role. If we make the playoffs, we'll have earned it. And, if we fail to get there, it'll be because we choked.

In the past it's been the goat or Bartman or the black cat that has "jinxed" the team. No more excuses. It's put up or shut up time. It won't be lucky hats or bad umpiring or rookie pitchers that decide our fate. Isn't it time we all accepted that?

The last thing I want to hear when we're in the playoffs is how the law of averages finally sent us there.

It's not to late to go to Soto.

Until the last two series were played,
I totally agreed with you on not tempting fate. If fact, I sent up a little prayer for the Cubs. It included how we have waited for so long and in the name of thousands of Cubs fans that have been born and passed that we are humbled and will not take for granted the opprotunity to enjoy this for everyone. The unfortunate truth is that if there is a baseball team around that can lose a totally winable game, it's the Cubs. It is something I have kept in the dark places in the back of my mind I guess so as to dull the pain when a loss happens for my beloved team.

But these guys have been playing their butts off. This team is something different. There is a determination there that I don't remember seeing in 2003. I am as skeptical as they come, but why not just gush love and positive vibes for the Cubs now? Especially now that they are in a really great position? Will I be totally crushed if they don't make the playoffs? Totally 100% crushed actually, but what is life if you don't enjoy times like this? They have all ready given me so much more than I expected this year, that I will still be happy and really look forward to next year even if they don't make the cut this year.

My references to tempting fate and
the baseball gods were tongue in cheek.  But the fact is that the Cubs haven't clinched the division.  And I don't want to provide the Brewers with bulletin board material to inspire them to win out the rest of their games.

Bulletin Board Material?
I somehow doubt that the Brewers are scouring Cub Blogs looking for motivation.

Nonsense
Come on guys.  This negative attitude stuff has gone on far long enough.  The Cubs have a 3 game lead with 6 to play.  They WILL win this division.  There is no such thing as the "baseball gods" just like there is no Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.  Good, solid baseball will win this division.  Bad bounces, bloop hits and bad calls may happen but there are no deities hanging around to make sure that happens.

It's time to win.  It's time to enjoy the journey.  It's time.

long way to go......look at SD just a few days ago and how dominant they seemed, now just reeling to stay in 3rd place in the West.  A look ahead at the pitching the Cubs will have to face (and those pitcher's history against the Cubs) is not an easy one.  They need to continue to take each game one at a time.  I still think this thing is going to come down to the  weekend

The Brewers are not going away
Look at their week. Two more against a dead St. Louis. Then four (at home!) against a San Diego team that just lost two of their best players. San Diego and Florida may end up screwing the Cubs once again.

by Mapmaker on Sep 25, 2007 8:04 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Personally...
I am not celebrating anything, but I feel much better with a 3 game lead rather than a 1/2 game lead going into the last week. I had to tell my son that it's not over yet as he is such a young Cubs fan.

SD is hurting right now with Cameron and Bradley out. I was counting on them taking it to the Brewers for the final set. We need to take care of business on our end. Go Cubs!

by crw89 on Sep 25, 2007 8:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Padres...
... still have the advantage, because they've been winning with their pitching all year. They've got Peavy, Maddux and Young scheduled for the Milwaukee series.

You can bet Greg Maddux will be on his best game for this one -- if for no other reason than he wants to beat his brother!

Actually, I think Peavy will miss the Mil series
According to the schedule I saw on ESPN.com, Peavy is pitching tomorrow (Wed) night so would miss the Milwaukee series.  Pitching matchups are:
  • Cassel vs Gallardo
  • Maddux vs Sheets
  • Young vs Bush
  • Tomko vs Suppan
That being said, if the NL Wild Card is still up for grabs on Sunday, I gotta believe Peavy will come back on short rest to pitch for the Padres.

On the Padres site...
... their pitching probables show "To be announced" for Sunday.

I agree, if SD needs that game, Peavy comes back on short rest.

by Al on Sep 25, 2007 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately, Al
Peavy is now the only constant of the 3. Young has never been the same since returning from injury, (the same muscle injury Dempster had this year)as he was clobbered last night -- again. And Maddux has looked like an old man lately. (Sorry, Jessica.) He was knocked out this weekend against the Rockies. If he can give 5 innings now, consider that a +.

If the Padres do squeak in, I'm thinking it will be another early exit because of the injuries, and a fading pitching staff. If Brett Tomko suddenly has become your second most reliable starter, you have problems.

But, to Tomko's credit -- he IS pitching well. Apparently he was horrible with LA, because they made him change his delivery. After the Pads picked him up at the 99-cent store, he went back to his old delivery -- and has been effective.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 25, 2007 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also --
Peavy, like Z -- hav been utterly ineffective on 3 days rest. I believe he has been pressed into this duty 2 or 3 times in his career -- the latest, a few weeks ago -- and didn't last long, taking an "L."

Today's pitcher freaks out on this type of assignment, which used to be pretty standard when you and I were kids.

just win
As our wonderful leader says, we just need to win each series. Taking 2 of 3 against the Marlins & Reds will do it.

i feel pretty much the same way
i like to be superstitious, makes it more fun. Milwaukee has a great home record this year and they finish out at home against two sliding teams. The Cubs may have to win four to get in, so let's cheer them on just like we have the last few games and all season for most of us.

by montanacubby on Sep 25, 2007 9:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Win Series
If we can win series out, and try to finish up by game # 161 (this Saturday), then it doesn't matter what Milwaukee does, and we are set with Lilly for next Wednesday.

"Oh well, The season may be over but on the bright side, next year will be the first time in a long while that I've actually been genuinely excited about a Brewers  team before the season starts.  And even if the Cubs win the Central, they are going to get swept in the first series they play anyways."

"It's the Cubs"
That line will repeated forever -- until the team wins something. Obviously, they've earned it over the past 99 years. I don't see anybody talking about the "Curse of the Bambino" any more -- do you? All it takes is finally -- winning. That story line is old news for the national media.

We don't know if it's going to be this year. But that attitude, the goat, the curse, B-man, all will be repeated over and over and over because it's an easy story line that everybody knows.

Win, get it over -- and all of that goes away.

I agree with this diary...
...in spirit. As hard as this is to admit emotionally at times, nothing we do sitting in front of our TV sets or computer monitors is going to have any affect on what happens on the field.

That said, we Cubs fans should have the same killer mentality that the Cubs players should have. Nothing has been won, nothing has been accomplished yet. Our laser focus should be on assessing the opponent at hand, distinguishing its weaknesses and then exploiting those weaknesses.

In other words, forget the playoffs (for now) and FRY THE FISH!!!

There's nothing wrong with positive thinking...that's different than arrogance. Believe it first, let it happen.

And FYI, of course -- people have in their hands tickets for a game not yet played, and still not a sure thing. If that isn't a positive belief....

I've said it before
and I'll say it again: If Cubs culture ever is going to change, this "waiting for the other shoe to fall" fatalism among its fans has to go away.

Not to say Cubs fans need to be arrogant -- just realistic.

Things are looking good right now, but the division race is not over. If the Cubs take care of business, they're in. If they fall on their faces and Milwaukee wins out, they'll deserve not to make it.

And it won't be the fault of curses, goats or whatever.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 25, 2007 12:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not being fatalistic.
I hope the Cubs will win and believe they can do it.  My attitude is positive.

But I firmly believe that acting like you know exactly how something will turn out, especially when that something is not remotely within your control, is just an invitation to disappointment.  It isn't Cubs-specific.

that's NOT what the National media is going to run with.....goats, B-man, curses, etc etc.

I do!
If you don't believe me, I have tickets to two NLDS games, a plane ticket to Chicago and a hotel room near the red line to Wrigley reserved for next week.

But there's a difference between believing and acting as if it's a done deal when it isn't.  The Brewers are back at home and they clearly have had a resurgence of energy.  We need to win out so they never have an opening.

by dfrancon on Sep 25, 2007 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I assume nothing
But I have to plan too. I have a deal with Al that if the horrible
happens and the Cubs end up in one game playoff he has to give
me a ride back to Chicago from Cincinatti. I ALSO have a plane ticket from New York to Chicago for the weekend of the Division series and today I put a hold on a reservation for one for the days of the World Series. In the meantime I will be starring at a paper during the "scary" parts of games as always.

There's more to it than that.
I think he wants to get Trachsel out of the rotation and start Rich Hill on Thursday instead. That's the real motivation.
