Fave ads?

As well as compiling my favorite Pat and Ron moments from this year, synched up to video, I'm also gonna add in a few of my favorite TV ads that I will always remember this season by. I think my two faves are the Bud Light axe/chainsaw ad, and the Mountain Dew Chuck Norris 'Chuckstrich' ad. Any other suggestions?

The Cubs actober ad is a must to include
Mizzou Tigers #20 in the nation. Chase Daniel for Heisman!

Any ad get tiring
after the first, oh, 100 viewings.

The Aquos baseball-themed TV ad was a cool one, the first several times, but now I cringe when that music starts.

And I still don't miss Murph and the Union 76 ads.

by ChipSet on Sep 25, 2007 10:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

very tiring
I've seen the Chuck Norris, chainsaw and Acquos ads more times than I'd like to think about. Does WGN market like this on purpose? --only showing a few different ads, hundreds of times a night? Couldn't they sell more ads to a wider range of advertisers? They reach a huge market, that's why I'd like to see more variety. Unless of course it's part of their strategy to only stick with a low number of advertisers and promise them lots of time.

Does anyone remember the Andre Dawson chain-link fence ad from the 80s? The Hawk said something like, "When I hit a ball onto Waveland, I hit it over a True-test chain link fence" or something like that, I don't remember the company name. Regardless, they should resurect it. As he was talking, it showed some of his moon shots onto the street.

Tru-Link
"When I hit it over a fence, I hit it over a tru-link fence."

The Hawk played a heck of a right field, but if that commercial was any indication, he wasn't much of a reader.  You could tell he was reading it off of a cue card, but reading it terribly.  Every time a ball goes out onto the street, though, my wife and I repeat the Hawk's tru-link lines.

That's what it was
Thanks Hector. And yes, it was some fantastic acting by Dawson. Makes me want to go out and put up a fence whenever I think about it.

Wow, I forgot about Murph. And how 'bout that dottering idiot employee of his, Nicholas?

I do not tire
of the ax/chainsaw ad.  Great idea, perfectly 'executed'.

LMAO
I wind up flipping between other games during most commercial breaks.

But you're right. That one is perfect.

Ads
As far as radio ads go, I hate the Jake the neighborhood guy... but if the Cubs keep winning I will listen to Jake the neighborhood guy multiple times. LOL

Jake doesn't live in MY neighborhood...
Who plays "Big Ball" anyway....I always called it 16 inch or clincher.  I never heard it called "Big Ball".

Jake, Neighborhood Guy
Maybe the marketing people.... arent neighborhood guys LOL

I think out of all of them... the Sauk Prairie Cow Chip Throwing one is my least favorite.

by Madison Cub Fan on Sep 26, 2007 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm okay with Jake.
But then, I'm not exactly a "neighborhood guy."

That said, those ads are so much better than the "Now that's Old Style" ones they ran for a couple of years.  Man, I was tired of those.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

The Bud Light Chainsaw/Ax ad is great
Not to change the subject but the worst is the Heineken Green Robotic Women ad.  I don't get it at all.

Radio
Until they were shown 50 gazillion times, I thought the Carlos, Barret, Dye, and Pierzynski McDonald's ads were real good.  I also like the most interesting man alive spots.

I can't stand the Tecate ads, where they can't call the Tecate beer because simply calling it beer is insulting.  That one and Jake the Neighborhood guy drive me nuts.

I can't remember exactly how it goes, but there was another one for Arlington Park, I think, that was some how a slam on Cub fans.  I wish I could remember it, but that drove me nuts.

My four-year-old daughter's favorite ad...
...is still the Pepsi spot with the guy riding the giant Pepsi ball/logo around San Francisco. I like the Bud Light chainsaw ad, too.

And I'm pretty sure these run during Cubs games but maybe not...but I love the Dos Equis ads featuring "The World's Most Interesting Man." Frickin' hilarious. An obvious Hemingway homage, which is cool with me.

As far as radio ads go, I gotta give it up for Ron Santo's Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating spots. I crack up every time he says "Acapulco Taco Pie."

Don't tase me, bro!

Those Pepsi ads
bother me.  They are some of the dumbest ads I've ever seen.  However, I must admit I like the Emerald Nuts commercials with Robert Goulet, if that tells you where my sense of humor lies.

That's my favorite
That's my favorite too.  I also love Robert Goulet.

I love the ones where calls are dropped in the middle of conversations so the one person thinks the other is shocked into silence.

by cubstoseriesby100 on Sep 27, 2007 6:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not my favorite
but I would definitely say it's funny.

The dropped call ones are annoying, IMO.

re: It's not my favorite
Yeah, the dropped call ads get an automatic thumbs-down from me because one of them features Roger Clemens.

As much as I hate Clemens
I think that's the best one of the bunch.

Bud Light at the Opera
My significant other is an opera singer (seriously), so perhaps I am closer to this in reality than others. Anyhow, I enjoy the ad of the guys who smuggle bottles of Bud Light in to the opera. And then the guy in front of them with a can asks "First Night at the Opera, Boys?" Absolutely marvelous. Sweetie-kins doesn't think it's very funny, so I try to be quick on the remote before she notices. But I can't stifle the grin. Bud Light is an awful beer but their commercials are great (I'm a Hacker-Pschorr guy).

Keep the faith boys, and GO CUBS!

re: Bud Light at the Opera
I just saw that for the first time the other day. That is a great ad. I love the look on the guy's face when the bottles start exploding.

Speaking of Bud Light commercials, I also enjoy that short one that plays before the game highlights on Cubs.com. "It happens to be the manner with which I kiss!"

Don't tase me, bro!

Super Bowl quality
After seeing that ad I wondered why the Bud Light people didn't save it for the Super Bowl.

Okay ...
I get totally grossed out by the Degree men's' deodorant commercial.  Maybe it's because I'm a female and we don't need to don chemical suits to apply our antiperspirant--well, at least in the United States.

I really like the Bud Light commercial that takes place in the ESL class, as stereotypical and obnoxious as it is.  That last line, "Don't speaka English," just cracks me up.  Very clever.

The ax addy is also pretty funny.

what about radio?
I hate the Jake the neighborhood guy ads...they're cheesy but at least their not insulting like the old style ads from last year with stand up comic bits making fun of people keeping score at the game and the like...

I like the dropped call ad where the butcher asks the meat supply guy if he's out of roast beef because his wife "wolfed it all down for breakfast" I laugh every time!

The radio ads with Lou Piniella are excruciating
So stilted... I don't remember what they are for, but I cringe whenever they come on.

re: The radio ads with Lou Piniella are excruciati
Well, there's one for Chevy Trucks and another for Dean's dairy products.

The Chevy ad is definitely excruciating. I actually kinda like the Dean's ads, especially the line that goes something like, "Dean's milk is great with cookies after the game!"

Best and Worst Ads
The Bud Lite Chain Saw commercial is priceless.  Watch the girl's expressions in the passenger seat when her boyfriend tells the ax guy to get in.  Listen closely to the ax guy's voice get higher when he says "but he has a chainsaw!" to the driver.  That commercial is tuned to a fine pitch.

Although I get tired of most of the dropped call ads, the Roger Clemens one is great.  My wife is deaf and can read lips (she was great when we'd watch the Bears when Ditka coached, as long as you didn't mind a lot of "expletive deleteds") and has taught me that anyone can catch some stuff if you watch carefully.  Watch his wife's lips when the call drops.  She's clearly saying "no", "no" more emphatically each time.  Then she knocks the flowerpot off the table in frustration.

The Chuck Norris commercial is old and tired (a little like Steve Tracshel) and I hate the music to it now.  The little twerps in it deserve to get their butts womped.  And the Heineken green girl commercial is dreamed up by someone who never gets west of the Hudson River, or east of Lake Tahoe, and thinks that is cool.

Of course, even with the hated commercials, you do know that the mere fact that we can remember them is what the ad people want to happen.

Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, whadya say? The Cubs are going to win today!
