Uncle Lou's Rest-Up Predictions

Now that the magic number is zero (nada, zilch, nuttin honey) and the Cubs cannot help themselves in their seeding in the playoffs, what is the prediction for giving guys time off until the playoffs start?

Definitely off Sat-Sun:  Soriano, Ramirez, DeRosa

Probably off Sat-Sun:  Theriot, Lee, Jones

One day off:  Kendall?

Uncle Lou should start Marshall tomorrow and Gallagher on Sunday.  I don't know if he'll announce it post-game or wait until tomorrow when he gives the lineup.  He would also know who needs the work in the next three days and who would be able to take the time off and still be able to play at a high level.

Should he rest Hill?
He won't have to pitch for like 6 or 7 days anyways?

I say start Hill tomorrow and go w/ Marshall on Sunday.

Might as well sit Sori, Lee, ARam, DeRosa, JJ, Floyd and Kendall.

SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!

Hill will start tomorrow.
Lilly obviously won't pitch Sunday and that's really the only surprise left to me. Who's going to pitch Sunday? Marquis? Marshall? Hart possibly? I'd like to see Hart start personally.

tomorrows line-up:

Pie
Cedeno
Murton
Ward
Monroe
Fontenot
Blanco
Theriot

Ward
Ward's hurt.  He's got a Thumb problem.  If he's even going to be healthy enough for the first post season series is an issue.   You certainly want to keep him from swinging a bat until then.

by frustratedfan on Sep 28, 2007 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah you're right
Forgot. Ward would've played 1B obviously so who'll play 1B? You gotta give Lee a day or 2 off. Maybe Soto? Why not?

IF would be 3B Theriot, SS Cedeno, 2B Fontenot and 1B Soto. That would be awesome!

Lilly will..........
........pitch on Sunday, at least according to Kasper.  He mentioned during the game that it might only be a couple of innings if they had already clinched, but that Piniella didn't want him getting rusting from inactivity.

Theriot's back
Despite playing, you know Theriot's back is still in pain.  He will probably sit out.  Plus this gives Lou 2 more days to see Cedeno bat.  With Ward hurt, Ronny might be the pinch-hit guy for October.  I know....scary...

One day off for everybody
I don't think anybody will get two days off, unless they want Theriot to rest.   Everybody will get one of the two days off, and you might see the starters get pulled after 3AB.

As far as pitchers go, I think Hill will start tomorrow to stay in tune, but will be on a very strict pitch count and may only go four innings.  All the playoff roster relievers will get an inning, and Marshall will get the start on Sunday.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

by Invalid User on Sep 28, 2007 11:09 PM CDT reply actions

Lou can't..........
..........give all of the starters the day off.

Who's going to play in the infield?  Cedeno at 3B; Fontenot at 2B; Ward at 1B (if he can go), but there's no one to hold down SS.

And if Ward can't go, that means putting Floyd or DeRosa at 1B.  Again, no rest for a starting position player unless Blanco can step in at 1B.

So there will be a need to shuffle, but obviously guys like Fontenot and Cedeno will get some PT.

predictions
I predict that even though I am making the trip from Dayton to Cincinati with half my relatives from Illinois in tow I will not be seeing most of the starters that I have been waiting all year to see.  But you know what WHO CARES!!!!!  I am going to go tomorrow to cheer on whoever is on the field and celebrate this division title.  Then I am going to hopefully celebrate a World Series title with this team.

my two cents
Hill should start tomorrow, go no more than four or five innings. Keep him from being too strong in his next start, but also with some gas left in the tank.

Theriot should get the next two days off. There are the back problems and clearly his bat has slowed... If he can be healthy and productive, thats a big plus for the playoffs.

The guys who really seem to need the rest over the next few days are Soriano and Ramirez who have been great over the past few weeks but both have nursed injuries. Let Derosa start tomorrow at 3B, Cedeno at SS, Fontenot at 2B, as for first... Floyd. Outfield should be Murton, Pie and Monroe.

On Sunday I think we'll see two at-bats from all of the starters (save Theriot) before unloading the bench. As for Lilly, it depends on whether or not he goes in game 1 or 2... A few innings on Sunday could be like a side session, but we're likely to see a lot of call-ups who we haven't seen in a few weeks.

I think this is about right.
Hill hasn't pitched in a week, so he could go at least five, because his next start wouldn't be until game three (a week from now).

You may be right about Lilly, since he'd be going on "normal" rest for game two. Otherwise Gallagher or Hart could start.

rest
hell we can put blanco at 1st to  rest lee.fontenot at 2nd,cedeno at short.rest the regulars but let them take batting practice to stat fresh.

by NOMAR on Sep 29, 2007 4:57 AM CDT reply actions

Resting LIne Up
(Draw batting order out of hat)
C Soto
1b Blanco
2b Fonetenot
SS Cedeno
3b Murton(Yes, I know.  Someone has to play third)
LF Fuld
CF Pie
RF Monroe

The problem is that we are one short of being able to rest the infield.  Murton would be a real disaster, but its the least exposed of the IF positions.  (Acutally, Murton is the emergency catcher.  I guess he could catch and Soto could play third).  Is it too late to call up someone to play third?

by frustratedfan on Sep 29, 2007 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Whilst ...
I essentially agree with the theory of resting all the big guns ... I'm not up on stats enough to know whether some of them still have some goals to accomplish (say a .300 average, a given amount of RBIs, runs scored), stat-wise, that might earn them bonuses through their contracts.

I think that'll determine who we actually see today ...

Murton at third?
That's what Bruce Levine just said on talking baseball on WLUP.  Yes, I know he was joking.  But does he read BCB?
