Coin Flips

Just saw coin-flip results for tie-breaking races in each division, and wild card.  Apparently, the cubs will play a one-game playoff at home if they tie the brewers, or in st. louis if they play the cards.  The cards will go to Mil. to break that tie (but we don't have to worry about that do we) For some reason I was under the assumption that a tie would be broken based on head to head records (which gives us an advantage over the brew, and up to this point the cards) At any rate, I know we all hope this won't matter and that the cubs will win the central without a playoff. Do these coin-flips happen every year and I've just somehow missed it?

Yep
They have happened every year in recent memory. Probably since the wildcard setup started.

What happens in the event...
... that there is a three-way tie?  Also, I noticed that for the wild card, the Braves and St Louis were not included.  Is this maybe because they were beyond 5 games out?

Yes, probably so.
There are scenarios for three or four way ties, but I cannot seem to locate them. Anyone?

I knew it was easy to find.
Here are rules for various tiebreaker scenarios.

If I recall, in years past...
... they denoted each team as either A, B, or C.

I found this reference in the event that a division title and a wildcard berth are at stake.

If three clubs from the same division finish the season with the same winning percentage and are tied for both the division lead and the Wild Card, then the teams would first have a twogame tournament to determine the division champion. Based on head-to-head records against one another, each team would choose to be designated as Club A, B or C. On the first day, Club A would host Club B, and on the second day, the winner of the A-vs.-B game would host Club C. The winner of the second game would be declared the Division Champion. On the third day, the two clubs that did not win the division would play each other for the Wild Card.

Source is here.

Note also...
... that if, somehow, the Cubs should be involved in a wild-card tie, these are the locations:

NL WILD CARD

  • Cubs @ Padres
  • Cubs @ Dodgers
  • Cubs @ Phillies
  • Rockies @ Cubs
  • Brewers @ Cubs

DAMN HENDRY!
He got 3 of 5 wrong! :)

Uh....
Wouldn't this be decided by how the teams played against each other during the regular season?  It seems stupid that we win the season series with the Brewers and then if there was a tie at the end of the season the playoff game could have been at Miller Park because of some coin flip.  That goes for any team.  If the Dodgers and Cubs tied for the Wild Card, the Dodgers certainly earned the right to host the Cubs this week.

Fair or not....
... this is the way it's always been done, and it's not likely to change.

Big news
With the Brewers road record this is good news.

I think
I think homefield for the game should be head to head which we have against the Brewers and at this point against the Cardinals.

Whether you think this or not...
... that's not the way MLB does it.
