Around SBN: BCB Interview: Mike Fontenot Bar-right-arrows

is every position player having a down year?

Just posted about this on another thread, but I think it might deserve its own. Of the Cubs everyday players, is anybody even meeting career expectations this year?

The only ones I can think of are DeRosa, Theriot and maybe Ward. Fontenot and Blanco don't play enough to really enter the debate.

But Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, JJ, Kendall, Monroe and Floyd are all well behind what I expected of them and what they did last year (don't quote me on Kendall, though). And it's not just a home run thing. It's an RBI thing.

And we're still in first. Go figure.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Ramirez...
... isn't down, except in HR.
  1. .291/.352/.561
  2. .317/.373/.545
Lee, too, is above his career averages:

Career: .280/.367/.499
2007: .311/.397/.493

Lee is on pace to drive in about 85 runs, about his career norm. Ramirez will drive in 100, despite missing 20+ games.

Not sure where these guys are "down" except in home runs.

Lee's career average in RBI
... is 85? Wow. Still, after '04 and '05, I expected more from him. Maybe that wasn't realistic.

Would you agree on the other guys, Al? Not trying to be contrary -- honestly curious.

Yes, probably so...
... particularly Floyd, whose power seems to have completely vanished.

About Kendall, his career averages are .297/.375/.394. Since coming to the Cubs he has hit .281/.378/.375, pretty close.

I will, however, agree that this team has to start hitting, and right now.

Some are...
Floyd, Jones, Murton, and Monroe certainly are.  So were Barrett's.  Lee and Ramirez are down in HR only, but on par in overall production with their career norms.  DeRosa is better than his career trend, and Kendall has been similar to his norm while he's been with the Cubs.  Soriano is not far off his norm in any category except RBI (which is team dependent, and largely due to the fact that our bottom of the order has been terrible this year).  His totals are down, but that's because he missed a month of the season with injury.

The question is whether you're comparing to career performance or recent trends.  Lee is down compared to 2005, but 2005 was wildly outside of his career trend.  Soriano is definitely down compared to last  year, but last year was certainly the best of his career.

I've been thinkin about this a lot
..and believe it's the main reason the Cubs are where they are, not further ahead. That and lack of a bust-out season from a pitcher, a la 1989 with ....(fill in blank, big righty who won 17 G out of nowhere, can't remember the name right now!! used to do commentary in Dan Pleasac role for FoxSports Chicago).

You need a few of your players to have bust-out seasons to win...only Theriot has and maybe this is his norm, DeRosa has been better than expected, but about same as last year.

The game across board is down in power but Cubs are really down...wonder what their HR for and against is?? Surely one of worst in baseball, and still a winning team!

The Cubs surely when building this team expected more out of C and RF than they've gotten, offensively, power-wise...Soto looks like he could be the answer behind the plate, but not sure what the answer is in RF..I'm not clear if Pinella likes this juggling act(Floyd, Murton, Jones, DeRosa, Pagan) or just does it because that's his best option.

I'm assuming Pie is gonna be the regular CF not sure we can or want to count on a comeback (power-wise) year from Jones in RF. They need an Ankiel type. Don't see it in system Colvin will need another year of seasoning.

DeRosa
Has anyone noticed that DeRosa's OPS had reached a season low last week?  He hasn't been hot in a while.

Picture of the video screen at Dolphin Stadium Friday night. Each Cub player picture was accompanied by a team photo of (I'm assuming) the 1908 team plus a goat that would pop up in random spots. Hilarious.

The goat noises being played over the PA system after each Cub out were a nice touch also. Strangely, no livestock cold be heard after Ward hit his HR.

After a bit of jumping around, I managed to snap this shot of Daryle Ward rounding third after his HR Friday night. My photography style is more Abraham Zapruder than Ansel Adams, but I thought it captured the crowd reaction nicely.
