Call me crazy
Call me crazy and it wouldn't be the first time you did and probably wont be the last but I really have a serious gut feeling about this year.
We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

well...
if the Cubs are to set any trends, a guess a world series per 100 years is good :-)

oh and with 2008 here.. it's official...100 years..

Good things happen
Good things happen for the Cubs in years that end in 08.

Actually the history of 8s is pretty decent

08 World Series
18 NL Pennant
38 NL pennant
68 a very good year
88 the lights went on
98 wild card season.

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

by cubstoseriesby100 on Dec 31, 2007 11:58 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sigh.
'68 wasn't a "very good year". The Cubs sucked for the first half, and finished third, 13 games out of first place.

I wouldn't necessarily mention '88, either -- noteworthy only for lights, the Cubs finished 77-85, 4th, 24 games out of first place.

That doesn't leave very many, does it. Let's leave history behind and start fresh.

There's good and there's good
Compared to the first several years of the '60s, 1968 must have seemed pretty good - at least they were in contention and finished in the "first division".

We have higher standards now, thankfully.

by ChipSet on Jan 1, 2008 10:06 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More about the '68 team.
They never really were in contention -- they had a terrible first half and after July 1 were never closer to first place than 12 games out.

But they did go 48-33 in the 2nd half of the season (a 96-win pace for a full season) and are the only Cubs team ever to be 10 games under .500 (35-45) and wind up with a winning record.

The 2007 Cubs nearly matched that -- they were nine games under (22-31) and finished 85-77, a 63-46 pace that would translate to about 94 wins in a full season.

Hope for the future. Right?

Al
Al that's what I meant more when calling 68 a great season.

The Cubs swept a DH on the day I was born that year by the way.

88 was great in a similar way.  Lots of young talent starting to look good.

And of course the big change of the lights.

As someone a little older than me, are you as flummoxed as I am to realize it will be 20 years on August 8th for the lights?

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

Yes indeed hope for the future
If we just played as well in '08 as we did last year while avoiding the bumps in the road that we had early in the season we could be sitting pretty in this division.  Let's hope we've figured out what to do if we reach the playoffs!

New Year';s Eve
To me New Year's Eve is the last holiday before pitchers and catchers report.

Once we turn the page on the calender it's time to count the days.  Opening day by the way is 90 days from today.  This is just about the halfway point of the offseason.

It won't be long til I end my emails for 24 hours with the line "The words that end all sadness and sorrow, pitchers and catchers report tomorrow"

Here's to the boys
of '08.

Cheers to Kling and Soto
To Chance and Lee
From Evers to DeRosa
And Tinker to Theriot
With Steinfeld and Ramirez
And Sheckard to Soriano
A slice of Slagle with Pie
Topped off by Wildfire Schulte and the Fukudome

And let's not forget
Brown and Zambrano
With Reulbach's Lilly
And the Overall Hill
On the mound with Pfiester and Marshall.

May they all be remembered in glory in 2108.

Best wishes
Let us know when baby arrives.

Do you know if it's a boy or a girl?

I am a silly sentimental goof.  When people have babies and are baseball fans if it's a boy I send them the song "Passing It On From father to Son"

And any girls the song is "I Hope You Dance"

They told us
it's a girl.

My wife can't sit up anymore. My girl is so low that my wife can't bend there anymore without discomfort.

We just want her to come into the world.  The waiting is killing us!  We sit around the house all day and watch bowl games and Project Runway. I think she'll grow up to design football uniforms.  :-)

Sounds like any day
Once you get to that point it's probably any moment.

Having had 3 I fully sympathise with your wife.

My brother was born at 1051 in December 30th my mom and stepfather can sympathise with the wanting to get in before the tax deadline.

And as I, Jessica and Sue and LittleRockrynofan have shown girls can be just as much sports fans as boys.  (I apologize if I'm leaving any other women out).

Good luck to all three of you!
You are one of my favorite posters because you are just full of useful information.

Definitely let us know when the baby girl comes. Girls can be great baseball fans, and sometimes even more obsessed than some guys who call themselves fans. :)

When the drought ends...
...this coming October, the world will become a different place. Forget all the nonsense the east coasters wrote and said about the Red Sox 2004 win being the greatest bit of sports news since the invention of the ball. Following the Cubs' 2008 World Series victory there will be a communal explosion of euphoria, brotherhood, justice, equality, peace on Earth, great sex, unlimited eating and drinking without weight or health repercussions, and, less than a month later, the election of a new president. What more could any human being ask for?

2008!
Wow, time flies.  It seems like 2007 was just yesterday.

Here's to you Al, and Cub fans everywhere.  Things will be great in twenty-oh-eight.  This is our year.

Happy New Year

And so it goes.

Do I really have to wait 90 more days?
Just remember 2008 will be like no other season in Cubs history.  We now have our very own genuine Japanese on-base machine -- something no other Cubs team can say.

Therefore, the 2008 Cubs will do what none of their predecessors have done -- WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!

I used to think...
that the Cubs didn't win because they were waiting until 100 years. I guess we will see if my unreasonable theory is true.

Al
Are we going to see another reading for the Cubs this year before the season starts like you had last year?

by Cub Fan in Card Country on Jan 1, 2008 10:40 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A "reading"?
Not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?

Reading
I think you had one of your friends do a reading on the team before the season started to see how they would do . I think they said the Cubs would do much better than the previous year but would ultimately fall just short of their goal, which was pretty cool because that's pretty much what happened. I think they also said Kerry Wood would play a major role, though, too. I don't put much stock into it, but I was just curious as to what they would say about the upcoming season, especially about Dome.

I don't recall doing that myself...
... though I think someone here might have done it independently. Anyone remember?
