Future Cub Consistency

Did you guys realize that even with the amount of major league experience the '08 Cubs will have, most of the players are either in their peak year (28-32) or younger?  Add to that the fact that every starting position player and pitcher is wrapped up until '09 (most longer), Hendry has quietly done a nice job of team construction.

Here is the breakdown - (the year listed is how long the Cubs control him either through contract or the rules of free agency/arbitration and the ages are from today so some will tick forward by opening day)

C - Soto (24, '12)
1B - Lee (32, '10)
2B - DeRosa (32, '09)
SS - Theriot (28, '11)
3B - Ramirez (29, '10)
LF - Soriano (31, '14)
CF - Pie (23, '12)
RF - Fukudome (30, '11)

P - Zambrano (26, '12)
P - Lilly (31, '10)
P - Marquis (29, '09)
P - Hill (27, '11)
P - Marshall (25, '12)

The bullpen will experience more turnover with 5 of the pitchers (Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Wood and Cotts) expected to get significant time will have their contracts expire after the '08 season.

Most teams with high payrolls have older players due to the free agency rules.  But, Hendry has managed to lock players up during their peak periods.  Looking at this, the Cubs are going to have a good core for a few years only needing to patch up the bullpen in the offseason.  If I were another NL Central team that would scare me a bunch.
