It's time to worry fellow Cubs fans

The Pirates just signed former Cub Great Jose Macias to a minor league contract and an invite to Spring Training.  Guys, I think we're in real trouble here with this one. It's gonna be a long, uphill battle to reclaim the Central Division crown. A guy like Jose "little nugget" Macias is the type of player that can really turn a team around, the kind thats capable of carrying the entire team on his tiny back for weeks at a time. The Pirates are my pick to win the Division, and possibly the World Series with mighty Jose at the helm.  God help us all.  Your thoughts?

My Thought
I'm amazed he didn't sign with the Reds.

Dusty
So what happened to all those players who supposedly called Dusty when he signed with the Reds and all those free agents that he was going to attract?

uummm...
Funny, but this could be in today's open thread....not really a diary, and this  type of stuff is what pushes well-thought out diaries down the line too quickly.

who cares
if he made it a diary, go to the recent diary list if you want to see the ones pushed down.

and
the recommended diaries are the ones that are worth talking about anyway

by tizzle on Jan 11, 2008 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Actually...
... although this was a very minor signing, I thought it was presented in a funny way -- diary worthy. I was actually worried for a second before I opened it and got a laugh.

Is Fukudome....
the next guy to wear #1 after Jose Macias or was there someone else in between? I kind of feel like there was, but I don't remember anything.

there may have been...
I can't recall one though.  Somehow I think Fukudome will be very deserving...though I do remember being in the bleachers one day when Macias homered onto Waveland.  Watching that little dude get into one like that was hilarious

Macias the Masher...
...has the unique distinction of being the last player to hit a home run out of Wrigley before the bleacher expansion.  Since I don't remember nor can I imagine him ever hitting more than one onto Waveland, I'm guessing that's the one you saw.  9/28/05, last home game of the season, against the Pirates.  Rained on and off all day.  Line shot, barely cleared the low fence in left-center.  Right at Ballhawk Andy, all he had to do was take a couple steps forward.  He couldn't believe it.  Kept looking up at the bleachers and said "Jose Macias???"

Thats amazing
Yeah that was the game, and the fact that you knew that was the game simply by the shockingly hilarious  Macias homer proves just how rare a feat it actually was.  I remember sitting there watching game, and he came up, after he managed to hit that thing the bleachers erupted in laughter, nobody could believe it, one of the funnies things I've ever seen at Wrigley

With apologies to the comedian Jeff Foxworthy....
You might be a Major League "journeyman role player" if....

You hit a tape measure home run out of the ballpark and everyone in the bleachers erupts in laughter.

Great story.  :)

Tony Womack
in his second stint with the team in 2006 wore #1.

Josh is correct.
You can find information on every single Cub who has ever worn any uniform number here -- that page is run by BCB reader kaseyi. (That link is permanently on the left sidebar.)

FYI, Tomas Perez wore #1 in spring training last year -- he's the last Cub to wear it, although not "officially" in a regular season game.

I'll tell you what
you are a funny guy! If you are serious, then I am laughing at you rather than with you. You cannot be serious... Man you are hilarious!

roberts?
are the cubs gonna pull the trigger on this guy or what?has anyone heard anything?

Bruce Levine
Says the deal is off, and that Roberts is no longer on the table.  I guess I'll take that for what its worth and assume the deal is dead unless proven otherwise, it's been dragging on for so long

Is chuck Norris REALLY a Cuns fan?
anyways, from what i'm hearing the Orioles are demanding one of either Hill, Pie or Tyler Colvin AND Gallagher and Cedeno... which, for a player like Roberts is, in a word, delusional. for Bedard i'd have to think about that, but for Roberts?

by petrie on Jan 12, 2008 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

yeah thats what I'm hearing too
I think this deal was dead in the water when they said they wanted Hill.  Unless we can pull a number three starter out of a hat, I'm thinking we're road blocked

Why stop at Macias?
Bring back Corey Patterson, Todd Walker, or Jeremy Burnitz .. any one of them would be glad to give Macias a run for his money ..
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

And don't forget Mark Bellhorn
seeing as how we seem to have a shortage of middle infielder types...

Bring back Julio Zuleta to back up D-Lee at first. And I hear Kevin Foster is looking for a minor-league deal...
