Rangers Asking for What?????

Ok I didnt see this on here yet so yell at me if i missed it. According to RotoWorld :

The Rangers are believed to be asking for Sean Gallagher and Matt Murton from the Cubs for Marlon Byrd, the Chicago Tribune reports.

If the Rangers had offered Byrd for either a year ago, they would have been laughed out of the room. We still don't see Byrd being worth as much as either, but the Rangers are in a rare position of strength and might as well capitalize on it.

http://rotoworld.com/

And Also Mr. Rogers is speculating :

Despite GM Jim Hendry's protestations, the Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers says the Cubs and Orioles are talking about a massive deal involving Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts.

According to Rogers' very highly placed source, Orioles owner Peter Angelos did shoot the deal down at the end of last week, but talks were back on again recently. Rogers believes the Cubs could send Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring in Marlon Byrd to replace him.

Ok Now my thoughts
I will be extremely pissed off if they trade both murton and Sean for Marlon. That would absoutly ridiculous.

And also I just dont liek the idea of trading all of our young pitching. Sure Erik is amazing, but what do we have for the next 6 years?

by Kchance on Jan 21, 2008 2:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What would we have for the next 6 years?
Well we could have a dominating pitcher who contends for Cy Young awards and leads us to playoff victories or we could have a bunch of 4th starters who never pan out.  I would guess that 6 years from now we'd have rather had Bedard than anyone we could give up for him.

its a good point
but its not just hill that we'd be giving up, im not down with giving up both pie and hill in a trade, unless we are getting an elite player back.  get johan if you're willing to give up hill and pie, im sure minnesota would listen closely to an offer that headlined those two guys and included a few more. sign johan long term to be a 1-2 punch with z for the next five years and now its worth it to give up these players.

Oh, brother.
First of all, Hendry said multiple times that the Bedard/Roberts rumors were, in his exact words, "not accurate". So who are you going to believe, a Tribune sportswriter, or the guy who actually is in charge of making these deals?

I will ask AGAIN that anyone picking up a post from Rotoworld -- a fantasy site -- that references another publication, please post the article from the other publication. In this case, here's the Phil Rogers article you are talking about. In it, he wrote:

Still, the one name to definitely keep in mind with the Cubs is Marlon Byrd. They are having conversations with the Texas Rangers about the center fielder, and this is a deal that could happen fairly quickly, assuming the Cubs are willing to give up some pitching.

The rumor in Texas involved Byrd for Matt Murton, but others say the deal would be Byrd for two or three players, including Murton. The Rangers, like the Orioles, apparently want pitching prospect Sean Gallagher to be in a deal.

Now, does that say that the Rangers have asked for Murton AND Gallagher for Byrd? No, it doesn't, and I think Hendry would laugh in the face of anyone who asked for that.

Relax. Do not panic. These things are unlikely to happen. Are the Cubs interested in Byrd? Yes, they are. But there's no way they're giving up Murton AND a pitcher for him. In fact, most likely, the RANGERS are the ones who would have to give up an extra body (likely a pitcher) in such a trade.

sorry i was just
sharing what I read with others. I do not agree with Rogers. And I think he is an idiot. Im just puting it up here so people can see what was writen. I was wrong for not including the whole article from the Trib. So for that I am sorry.

No worries.
I agree with you, too. I think a lot of this comes from speculation from certain sportswriters and doesn't really have any basis in reality.

hendry's "not accurate"
comment seemed a way to side-step the purpose of the question.  he said the way the article was written, it was not accurate.  so that could easily mean that it was an 8-2 swap, or that the orioles gm nixed the deal and not angelos.  hearing hendrys comments later that he would trade any of his prospects for the right player seem to suggest there is legitimacy to the rumor.

That's not how I read it.
First, I was there and heard Hendry say it, not just read it in the paper. The way he said it, it sounded like he thought the whole thing was made up (and I agree).

Second, while yes, he did say he would trade any of his prospects for the "right player", I don't think Roberts falls in that "one last piece of the puzzle" category for which you'd trade the farm.

Bedard may come closer to that description, but he's still not worth four or five prospects all by himself, especially when at least one of those rumored (Pie) isn't just a prospect, he's expected to be the Cubs' starting CF.

I don't think Hendry was being evasive at all.

Denial
I did not hear Hendry's comments. I got the essence from the article and to me, he's doing what a GM does, you try to deny without lying because the vast majority of trade proposals don't happen. So to me, the rumors could have Hill, Marshall, Gallagher, Pie, Cedeno and Veal going while in reality Hendry and MacPhail are discussing Hill, Marshall Gallagher, Fuld, Cedeno and Veal. Hendry can then say that the report is inaccurate.

Until Hendry comes out and says that he has no interest in trading for certain players or he has no interest in a proposed deal I think one has to look at the GM speak and realize that its not really a denial.

was there also
i just must have gotten a different impression than you, hendry to me seemed just to be looking for a reason to shoot down the rumor, i would have expected to hear, "completely made up" or something of the sort if there was no truth behind the rumor.  him saying, "the way the article was written was not accurate" could mean any number of things, and just seemed like the easy way out of the question that was being asked.

He didn't say...
... the article was not accurate, he said the 7-for-2 trade was not accurate.

We're splitting hairs here, I know. I still think this deal is dead. And it ought to be.

I was there as well
and the way it sounded to me was that the idea that Angelos shot the deal down was not accurate. I also got the impression that they were ready to move forward with Derosa and Theriot......unless they could get a deal done.

The way I see it
Sure, it looks like a good deal to get Bedard and Roberts. However, it will cost way too much than we can afford to give up. This puts the Cubs at a fork in the road: Pile up on veterans and have a win now ball team or keep the young pitchers in Gallagher and Marshall and have them develop and have a solid team for years to come.

If this is the deal: Roberts and Bedard for Hill, Gallagher, Marshall, Pie, and Cedeno, it is too much. Hill and Bedard esstentially cancel each other out. Bedard would be an upgrade over Hill, but is it worth giving up a centerfielder who could be a star in the league? Gallagher has a lot of potential as well. Not to mention we have Patterson in the Minors who could be our 2B.

While it looks good at first glance, this trade would hurt the Cubs in the long run

The only way I would do a Roberts deal
is if the Cubs only have to give up either Marshall or Gallagher, Cedeno, and a prospect. Mcphail is asking for too much for an alleged steroid user, IMO..

Murton and Gallagher for Byrd
is the funniest thing I have ever heard. I wouldn't trade one of those guys straight up for Byrd. This is just about as stupid of a rumor as the Felix Pie for Gerald Laird rumor back in July. This trade is so unrealistic that you can't even take the rumor seriously.

The Cubs can get a back up CF who can hit right handed pitching for alot less then this. They should end talks with the Rangers over Byrd and get someone else. To get this type of player we should trade any of our top 20 prospects.

Lets just trade Murton to the Padres and get a good prospect or two.

I could also
I also want to be 6 feet tall and built like Jessica Beil but that is as likely to happen as the Rangers are to get both Gallagher and Murton in this trade.

Didn't they used to have that
slugging right fielder?  We used to have him I think, and we could move Fukudome to center.  What was his name...?

Al
Al I kind of wonder what is your impression of Hendry not as a GM but as a person to deal with in general?

He always seems nice and outgoing and you really really want to like him.

At least we don't have people here like other sites making constant comments on his size like that has anything to do with his GM abilities.

The last oversized GM we had in Chicago was the GM for 6 world titles.
